⦿ French Inhaler – Warren Zevon 1976

 1976.  Warren. . and the painfully beautiful lyrics
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
‘How are you gonna make your way in the world when you weren’t cut out for workin’.. .
. .where will you go with your scarves and your miracles, who’s gonna know who you are’

The ‘So Long, Norman’ part seems to be a veiled reference to Norman Mailer’s 1973
book “Marilyn’ in which he was one of the first to publicly link Marilyn Monroe and Bobby
Kennedy, for shock value and publicity. . True or not – it struck people as a sleazy thing
to do for attention and it reflected badly on him…Mailer later admitted to doing that with
the intent to increase his book sales.. . So long, Norman .

⦿ I’m an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande – Dan Hicks & the HotLicks 1972

old cowhand title new

 the  amazing  vocalist  is  >> Lickette   Maryann  Price < <

I have
 loved this ever since first hearing it years ago. . I made my own youtube video of this
record about 10 years ago, because at the time there was nothing with this version. . I used
the vintage cowgirl image for fun, since the song was sung by a woman, instead of a man.

One day the singer herself, Maryann Price, contacted me via youtube to say that she enjoyed
the  cowgirl picture being associated with her record – a thrill for me !
. . ( Later  mean  old  youtube  deleted  my  channel, so  that  video  was  lost
.)

 Mark Knopfler – Notting Hillbillies, 1990 . . I Think I Love You Too Much
a tasty blues from the short-lived Notting Hillbillies. . with a sweet pedal steel guitar solo

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
I like the little flair he does at  ‘if I locked you up’ , the look to one side, it’s an element of the song – it’s also seen on other live performances.  It’s like the finger-snap on Romeo & Juliet

⦿ Meditation from Thaïs :: by Massenet 1894, violin solo

Many years ago in a thrift store I bought  an oversize  78 record, red, from the 1920s,
just because it was unusual. When I played it at home this is the composition I heard.

I knew nothing about the piece at the time  but it seemed vaguely familiar. I strongly
sensed I’d heard it somewhere, sometime, but really I knew nothing about it then.
I just liked the way it sounded, so evocative, dream-like, and melancholy.
Later I learned it was a well known composition from a 1894 opera by Jules Massenet.
I don’t  care about the opera,  I just love this piece !

⦿ Buzzin’ Fly – Tim Buckley 1969

A  beautiful and emotionally powerful  love song by Tim Buckley from the Happy-Sad  album, 1969... . His best known song  was ‘Once I Was ( a soldier)’ – used to great effect in the 1978 film  ‘Coming Home’   with Jon Voight, Jane Fonda  &  Bruce Dern.
Sadly he died from a heroin overdose in 1975, only 28 yrs old..  His son, musician Jeff Buckley,  also died young  at age 30, from drowning.

⦿ Saturday Night Fever line dance – John Travolta 1977

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
                 =   fever   night   fever   night   fever  =
 I saw the movie recently for the first time since the 70s  to check out the dancing.  Oddly I don’t really remember this line dance part but now it’s my favorite part.  There’s just something so wholesome and fascinating about it and I like the song.
Then I discovered it was,  and may still be,  a  ‘thing’  that various groups of folks do.  There’s a 2011 video from England of a flash mob doing the dance in a big plaza.   A core group of maybe 10 people started and others joined in until there were around 60,  some who knew the steps and also people winging it.   Lots of spectators and everyone had fun
⦿Patti Smith -Because the Night,1978
Patti  Smith – Because  the  Night   1978,  live
. . . . .  co-written with Bruce Springsteen
 lyrics   Because the Night – Patti Smith 1978
Take me now, baby, here as I am
Pull me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger, is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed
Come on now, try and understand
The way I feel when I’m in your hands
Take my hand, come undercover
They can’t hurt you now
Can’t hurt you now, can’t hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to love
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Have I doubt when I’m alone
Love is a ring, the telephone
Love is an angel disguised as lust
Here in our bed until the morning comes
Come on now, try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand as the sun descends
They can’t touch you now
Can’t touch you now, can’t touch you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to love
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
With love we sleep
With doubt the vicious circle
Turns and burns
Without you, oh, I cannot live
Forgive, the yearning burning
I believe it’s time, too real to feel
So touch me now, touch me now,
touch me now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to love
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because tonight there are two lovers
If we believe, in the night we trust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to love
‘Cause we believe, in the night we trust
Because the night belongs to lovers
⦿The Highwayman~ the Highwaymen (Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson) 1990
1990  live.   I  had  a  4th row  seat  at  the  Highwaymen  concert, Oakland  Paramount  Theater,  November 1991.
I was sitting kitty-corner behind June Carter !   So Johnny Cash was looking in that direction when I waved at him,  being silly,  and he looked at me, like  ‘Who is that?’  like he thought he should know me.
Later in the concert each man did his big hit.  When Willie sang  You Were Always on My Mind,   Waylon and Kris were grabbing  some water and  a smoke, but Johnny Cash stood mesmerized and reverent to Willie singing,  it was a powerful moment.
⦿Hollywood and the Stars theme – Elmer Bernstein
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The memorable beautiful theme by Elmer Bernstein for the tv show ‘Hollywood and the Stars’, 1963-64;
also used for a time at the Academy Awards.A lovely piece of music that so many remember and love.
  To me it evokes a haunting melancholy,  yet at the same time a majestic grandeur
..
Bernstein was a prolific composer with 200+ well-known film & television themes and scores in 50+ years,
for a wide scope of projects — dramas, comedies and westerns — the iconic Magnificent Seven theme, for one.
⦿Ragtime theme-Randy Newman 1981
The lovely theme from the 1981 film Ragtime.
One of Randy Newman’s many talents is  bringing to life through his original music,
a  strong evocative sense of an ‘old-timey’ atmosphere, such as the Old Deep South,
and in this piece, 1906 – the time of the film’s  story,  a  grand wistful waltz.
The Year of the Cat    lyrics
On a morning from a Bogart movie      In a country where they turn back timeYou go strolling through the crowd like Peter LorreContemplating a crimeShe comes out of the sun in a silk dress runningLike a watercolor in the rainDon’t bother asking for explanationsShe’ll just tell you that she cameIn the year of the cat
.
She doesn’t give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hersAnd you follow ’till your sense of which directionCompletely disappearsBy the blue tiled walls near the market stallsThere’s a hidden door she leads you toThese days, she says, I feel my lifeJust like a river running throughThe year of the cat.
While she looks at you so coolyAnd her eyes shine like the moon in the seaShe comes in incense and patchouliSo you take her, to find what’s waiting insideThe year of the cat
..
Well morning comes and you’re still with herAnd the bus and the tourists are goneAnd you’ve thrown away your choice ,
you’ve lost your ticket  so you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remainIn the rhythm of the newborn dayYou know sometime you’re bound to leave herBut for now you’re going to stayIn the year of the cat
⦿Hank Williams~Hey Good Lookin’- Honky Tonk Blues- Lovesick Blues
How about some classic  old-time country  from Hank Williams  Sr. . .
.
I like different kinds of music – straight-up classic rock & roll, classical Bach, and more . .and some old country too.
I got to thinking about how I  first connected with country music, because  it was not in my house growing up.  When I was a teenager  lying awake late into the night  I’d listen to my grandpa’s old 1940s Zenith table radio, dialing around;  it had a great sound with a bass control.
Late one night,  on a 50,000 watt station in UTAH to California, I heard Johnny Cash & the Carter Family singing  ‘Daddy Sang Bass  & Will the Circle Be Unbroken’.   That was the spark !
I couldn’t believe I was hearing this great song  loud & clear as day from faraway Utah in the middle of the night !
