Installing Livejournal: location of files and importance of Subversion [Jul. 12th, 2012|08:13 pm]

I wish to install Livejournal for my website. I tried my best, but I could not find a page or location from where I can download the LJ installation files. My sites are hosted at IXwebhosting.com, and they told me that my account has Perl(v5.8.8), MySQL - 5.0.41, apache-1.3.37, mod_perl 1.29, but no Subversion. So, here are my questions:

1. From where do I download the files needed to install Livejournal for my website? Will I be able to install them through FTP?

2. How important or compulsory is it to have Subversion for installation and maintenance of Livejournal? Will it be possible to get updates and keep the software up-to-date without Subversion?

"couldn't retrieve anum" error when using XML-RPC [Aug. 20th, 2011|03:37 pm]

I've been unsucsessfully trying to extract my LJ content into a wordpress.com account using their import tool. The wordpress.com web form accepts my username and password and appears to successfully authenticate with LJ, but then immediately spits out an XML-RPC error. The same exact error is being reported by ljdump (most recent version, 1.5.1) when I run it on the command line on my Snow Leopard machine:

couldn't retrieve anum for entry at /home/lj/cgi-bin/ljprotocol.pl line 3952

If I understand this correctly, this appears to be an issue with LJ itself, correct? If so, what's the proper procedure for reporting this in the most helpful possible way?

I've been able to completely back up my journal using XJournal, but I don't know if the XML it produces (the .plist file) is actually of use to a wordpress.com importer, plus it does not appear to grab comments. I definitely want to preserve my comments.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Attempting to Give Something Back: Tags [May. 3rd, 2011|06:56 pm]

Hello fellow programmers!

I'm here to state my intentions, but in doing so, I'm also asking for help, guidance, mentorship and any other form of support or path lighting you see fit to send my way.

Instead of being one of those people that just sits around on their ass doing nothing, I've decided to become proactive. For a long time, I've wanted to a) be able to merge tags on LJ posts as well as b) remove all empty tags (tags with a post count of 0) with one click. To that end, I've joined this community and started reading as much as possible about the code etc.

I see that Perl is the language of choice around here. I also see LJ loves Debian which is a good thing because I also use Debian at work so I'll have some idea of using that OS. As soon as I'm done here, I'm going to get a box and install squeeze and follow that up by installing LiveJournal via the documentation. Then more reading until I find the area(s) I need to hack/learn about to get to the areas I need to hack.

I have six months real-world experience writing acceptance tests in Java. I'm not one of those people that write code for a hobby, but I do live in front of my computer and have many year's experience with these machines, learning more each and every day.

If anyone who reads these lines has any pertinent advice, please feel free to elucidate in the comments below.

Thanks,
schpydurx

Do the LJ APIs include any support for OAuth?  Or are there any plans to add such support?

Thanks.

Two questions regarding features that were turned off long long ago:
  1. Will the client statistics thing ever be re-enabled? It's been so long that I can't even remember what it looks like anymore. I think it'd list what clients a user used to post to their LJ, and there was possibly another page that'd give an overview on how many people were using your client.
  2. The checkfriends method was disabled after a version of LochJournal had a bug in it that'd bombard the server with requests. It was then re-enabled for paid users only. I gave up trying to implement it when it turned out it'd be useless for everyone but paid accounts. Will this ever get turned back on for free people (or has it been and I haven't been paying attention?)?

Complicated issue and error msg [Jan. 20th, 2010|04:44 pm]

Two things here:

Yes, I already understand about operating syndicated accounts in LJ using feeds to update LJ with a site's latest content , but here is the issue: Ok, what if an attorney I am helping out with live journal wants to take all of his existing posts on his existing website which is Personal Injury Attorney Augusta .com and syndicate these into individual posts automatically on LJ without having to do this manually? Here is the other issue, say he has 10 or 14 different post categories on his main website and he will posting to each category once a month. Any suggestions on how to organize this data on LJ? The post categories are related yet so diverse it wouldn't make sense for them to necessarily be thrown together in LJ.

The next issue kept coming up when installing Live Journal on the server. I have never gotten this message before.

Can't locate object method "is_sup_enabled" via package "LJ::SUP" (perhaps you forgot to load "LJ::SUP"?) at /home/lj/cgi-bin/weblib.pl line 2067. @ www.mydomain.com

What does this mean? Should I just totally redo this install?

Any help, ideas and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.. Please reply with your recommendations.

undocumented XML-RPC methods [Dec. 2nd, 2009|12:03 pm]

Some googling and testing revealed the following undocumented XML-RPC methods, which expose a number of nice functions from the client side.

All are in the LJ.XMLRPC namespace of course:

getfriendspage
sendmessage
setmessageread
getinbox
addcomments

These were gleaned from: code.livejournal.org/trac/livejournal/browser/trunk/cgi-bin/ljprotocol.pl

It seems only paid users can call addcomments.
This codebase is over a year old, it looks like they aren't using that repository. I believe there may be other methods. The iPhone app developercosysoftware_en some upcoming functionalities in his app that don't seem available from these methods. He claims to have gotten LJ to extend the XML-RPC interface, but won't disclose what these new functions might be.

The LJ support is useless. Is there another way to contact LJ devs? Anyone with XML-RPC client should implore LJ to update their documentation.
