Worcester (pronounced WU-str) is known as the “Heart of the Commonwealth” because of its location near the geographic center of Massachusetts, and a heart is the official symbol of the city. Its ideal location puts Worcester a little over 40 miles west of Boston, 50 miles east of Springfield and about 40 miles northwest of Providence, Rhode Island.
