Masa Chronicles: The Copper Scroll Author Interview and GIVEAWAY!

About the Book

Book: Masa Chronicles: The Copper Scroll

Author: Nicholas Teeguarden

Genre: Christian Fiction Action/Suspense

Release Date: October 7, 2025

When American grad student and Veteran Joshua Bennett lands in Amman, Jordan, he thinks he’s chasing academic glory. What he finds instead is a centuries-old mystery that’s been waiting for someone reckless or desperate enough to uncover it.

At the center of it all is the Copper Scroll, a cryptic Dead Sea artifact rumored to hold clues to an ancient treasure buried deep in the Judean desert. But Joshua soon learns it’s no ordinary scroll.

Hidden symbols, coded phrases, and whispers of a “shepherd’s path” point to something far more significant and far more dangerous.

As the clues mount, so do the warnings. A silent observer in the library. A cryptic priest with a knowing smile. A message slipped into Joshua’s backpack: The shepherd’s path is not for the faint-hearted.

A cryptic priest and a rabbi jump in to help understand uncovered information. As Mossad agents, Templar knights, and ISIS operatives close in, Joshua and his allies race to unravel the truth. But who seeks to unearth it, and who will kill to keep it buried?

More from Nicholas

Whenever I think of telling a story, I have Indiana Jones swapping the bag of sand with the golden idol. The spirits swirling around the Nazis and the uncanny escapes from the clutches of death.

I spent my early adult years stomping through biblical lands with the military, experiencing life that seemed to represent many stages of evolution. Seeing the differences in how people value life, faith, and each other.

I experienced the heart-pounding adrenaline of adventure, the edge of life moments, and the strange stillness that follows them. The sights, sounds, and smells of those places stay with you forever.

When I finally retired, I walked to the altar, a different kind of battlefield, and realized that all those years of chasing survival were really leading me to understand purpose.

That moment changed how I responded to almost everything that came after, and it’s what shaped The Copper Scroll.

Like me, Joshua “Masa” Bennett isn’t just searching for an ancient artifact; he’s looking for proof that faith still matters, that truth can survive the centuries, and that even when everything feels lost, redemption can still be found buried beneath the dust.

Writing this book was my way of reconnecting with those memories, with the lands I once marched through, and with the faith that anchored me through it all.
It’s a story of mystery, courage, and belief. The kind of adventure that begins in the desert but ends in the heart.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

Somewhere between devouring childhood adventure novels and realizing the “little stories” in my head were not going away, writing stopped being a hobby and became the thing I could not not do.

Most influential author on your writing?

Bill Wallace for early adventure and heart, plus Ernest Cline for immersive, nostalgic worldbuilding.

Interesting writing quirk?

I almost always write with a show or movie playing quietly in the background so my main story brain can focus while the rest of my mind is distracted.

Work schedule when writing?

Very blue-collar: show up, sit down, and put in the time, even on days when the words feel like pulling teeth.

Plotter or pantser?

Hybrid. There is a loose outline, but it changes constantly as characters make better (or worse) decisions than originally planned.

Favorite/special place to write?

The reclaimed home office that used to be my wife’s school space, with my dogs camped on the leather chair behind me.

Literary period you’re drawn to? Why?

Modern and contemporary, especially anything orbiting the World Wars, because the moral pressure and technological shifts are so intense.

Describe your book in five words.

Ancient treasure, faith under fire.

Character that speaks most to your heart? Why?

Masa, because his mix of stubborn faith, doubt, and longing for truth feels closest to real, everyday discipleship.

Do you hide things for readers to find?

Yes

Hobbies?

Reading, video games, hunting birds with my dogs, and exploring new places with no set plan.

Biggest inspiration?

My dad’s travel stories and his “seize the moment” attitude, plus the grace of God in the middle of a messy life.

Favorite book?

Ready Player One, probably, right now anyway.

Traditional, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Ebooks

Favorite Bible verse or story?

Acts 9 and the story of Ananias going to Saul—how God meets his hesitation, gives grace, and still sends him.

If you could live inside a book?

Just let me know when the Oasis opens up.

If you could meet one author?

The apostle Paul, to ask him about his letters and how he expected churches to live them out.

Advice for aspiring writers?

Write consistently, read widely, finish things, and do not wait for permission, treat it like a craft you apprentice in, not a lightning strike you sit around hoping for.

More from Carole

When I began writing the Western Romatic Supense books, I didn’t realize how much I would fall in love with the characters and their lives. All three of the books were special to me (and I am considering more). One thing that helped me was a lot of research, but even more so was our travels in several western states. We were able to meet quite a few new people along with some of the American Natives.

It’s always fun to find new things in each of my books, and in Hunter’s Rose, I learned about early restaurants during that time period. I searched for information about the early trains. I looked for places and things about Boston. I researches, especially, for Mexican teas. And I also had to research Mexican language.

It was a very fun time spent in research, and though I’ve only briefly visited Mexico, it was still a part of my memories and life events which added to the research for my book.

Travel is a big part of our life. From Washington state to Florida to Maine, it all was folder for my future books at the time. And as a writer I intensely enjoy capturing every moment, every memory, every thing that could possibly be used in a book.

  • From harrowing experiences to almost vehicle problems and close-to-wrecks at times (and not usually our fault).
  • From winter weather where I was praying we’d make it to our destiny.
  • From fun times like gold panning in mountain streams to rescuing beautiful horses, along with trying my hand at weaving—and oh, what a laughter my American Indian friends thought that was!!
  • From trying foods that I didn’t particularly care for to some delicious items that I really enjoyed.
  • From almost meeting President Reagan to climbing a mountain to see the hogans where certain American Indians lived (and one where a baby sheep stayed with them).

I could go on and on, but it would take too much time. Finding, living the life we’ve had has been a blessing, especially for my work as an author.

And I feel so honored to have the privilege of learning from life and the experiences we’ve encountered to give me that so that I might create stories that are realistic, fun and touching.

I hope you find Hunter’s Rose just that way.

About the Author

Gina Holder is an indie author and stay-at-home mom. She’s had an infatuation with books for as long as she can remember. She loves sharing uplifting messages from God’s Word and introducing readers to new and new-to-them authors on her blog. When she’s not writing, Gina enjoys playing the piano, cooking, reading, watching Hallmark mysteries, and solving “escape room” puzzles. She loves growing in her craft as an author. She published her debut novel in 2017. Gina lives in Wyoming with her husband and daughter.

More from Gina

The story of The Puzzle Within began four years ago with the seed of an idea based on my enjoyment of Escape Rooms. I imagined a villain that moved an escape room into the “real world” and an FBI agent with nightmares that no one could or would explain.

In 2023, I entered the first five chapters into Scrivening Press’s “NovelStarts” contest and won first place in the Mystery/Suspense category. In the last three months of 2023, I wrote the entire novel, then spent the next couple of months in editing mode. My beta readers gave me feedback, and I incorporated their thoughts. In June of 2024, I entered The Puzzle Within into Scrivening Press’s “GetPubbed” contest and won the grand prize, a publishing contract.

It’s been my dream since a young age to be a traditionally published author, but it’s God who gets all the glory. I write for Him and His glory, and it’s my prayer that The Puzzle Within will touch lives as well as entertain readers.

A large focus in The Puzzle Within are the riddles, puzzles, and ciphers Enigma leaves for Arizona and Nick in their pursuit of a kidnapped teenager and the truth behind Arizona’s nightmares.

This message below is coded in Caesar Cipher. To solve, take each letter and shift it by four letters, wrapping around from Z to A. So, A=D, B=E, C=F… and so on. (Traditionally, the Caesar Cipher shifts by thirteen letters, but I didn’t want to make it that difficult.)

Once you solve the code, leave a comment below with an emoji if you’ve figured it out—but no spoilers!

Somewhere in the story, a truth waits to be uncovered.
It’s simple. It’s powerful. It’s hidden.
Can you crack the code?

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a little girl. I always had a vivid imagination and loved making up stories. My first story involved a pig, a rainbow, and God’s promise.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I can’t begin a new story until I have a title.

Describe your book in five words.

Escape room in a novel.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

This may sound cliché, but my biggest inspiration is Jesus. Every book that I write, my desire is to share the love of Christ and His wonderful grace to readers through the lives of my characters.

If you could live inside a book, which one would it be?

Anne of Green Gables.

When I was a girl, I always imagined myself as Anne. I visited PEI as a teen and would love to go back there someday.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

I would like most to meet Tracie Peterson. Hers were some of the very first Christian novels I ever read, and through them, I fell in love with Christian Fiction.

Click HERE to get your copy!

About the Author

S.F. Baumgartner writes fast-paced Christian suspense thrillers. Book 1 of her Mirror Estate series, Living Secrets, was selected as one of the Top Picks in the thriller category at Killer Nashville, 2024. Her love for writing comes second only to her love of reading. When she’s not busy writing about complex characters, secretive operatives, and relentless agents, she spends her time binge-watching crime TV shows, such as NCIS, or playing with her cats. If you enjoy James Patterson’s style—specifically short chapters—you’ll love her Mirror Estate series.

More from S.F.

I’m so excited to share Hidden Secrets, the fourth book in my Mirror Estate Psychological Thriller series. For those who’ve been following Grace Benson’s story, this is the next chapter in her journey—a deeply personal one with plenty of the twists, danger, and suspense you’ve come to expect from my writing.

If you’ve read Tangled Secrets, you know that Grace finally uncovered the truth about her birth mother. That revelation opened doors to even more questions, and in Hidden Secrets, she takes the next step: discovering the identity of her birth father. Of course, in Grace’s world, nothing is ever simple. This isn’t just a straightforward search for a man from her past—it’s a journey wrapped in danger, deception, and murder.

Writing this book was such an adventure for me. Grace is a character I’ve grown to love, and putting her through these intense, high-stakes situations is always a mix of excitement and challenge. This time, she’s dealing with abduction, espionage, and a web of lies that keeps tightening around her. Every step she takes toward the truth comes with a cost, and watching her face these challenges while staying true to herself was as rewarding to write as I hope it is for you to read.

But I’ll admit, Hidden Secrets didn’t come together without a few struggles. I rewrote several scenes to make sure the story flowed the way it needed to. The pacing, the tension, and the timing of the twists had to be just right. I love keeping readers on the edge of their seats, but it takes some effort to make sure every piece falls into place.

One of the things I think makes this book stand out is how personal it is for Grace. Yes, there’s plenty of action, danger, and intrigue, but at its core, this story is about family and identity. Grace’s search for her father forces her to confront parts of herself she didn’t even know were missing. I wanted readers to feel that emotional depth while still delivering the suspense and surprises that make a Mirror Estate thriller what it is.

The reviews so far have been incredible. Hearing that readers are loving Grace’s latest journey means the world to me. Some have mentioned how much they appreciated the balance between the emotional moments and the fast-paced action, which makes me feel like all those rewrites were worth it!

If you’re already a fan of the series, I think you’re going to love where this installment takes Grace. And if you’re new to Mirror Estate, don’t worry—Hidden Secrets stands on its own. You’ll get plenty of context to enjoy the story, but starting at the beginning will definitely give you a richer experience.

Author Interview

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

I think it would be James Patterson. I try to imitate his short chapters, multiple point of views, edge of the seat storytelling.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a loose plotter – I know the starting point and the ending point. And I have a loose outline of the middle, but most of time, I revise the middle to suit the story.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

I like to write at home, in my room, on my desk.

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

My current series is ongoing. I leave hints, and give out the full details until it’s the right time. Not sure if it’s considered hiding things.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I like ebooks. Print books are okay. I do not like audiobooks.

More from Valerie

The Interesting “Task” of Choosing Character Names

I wrote the first rendition of Dangerous Dalliance many years ago. Obviously, it wasn’t published, so I put it aside and continued writing other novels. After publishing my ninth book, I decided to revise the story.

Choosing names for my characters, especially the hero and heroine, is a task I take seriously. I read through my lists and check online sites. I don’t go to that much trouble for my secondary characters, but I have a quirky way to choose their names.

I spent twenty-five years working in the public school system. Many students stand out in my memory for positive reasons. However, I remember a few kids or their parents less favorably. Any teacher will understand. Well, the names of those students or parents often play a role in my stories as secondary characters who don’t leave a positive impression.

The name of a major secondary character in my original Dangerous Dalliance was Brandon. From the first moment my student with that name entered my classroom as a four-year-old with severe allergies, a language delay, and behavioral issues until the day his family moved out of state, his behaviors and antics provided me with giggles and frustration.

Fast-forward several years. I live in a retirement community where we have 24/7 concierge services. When I moved here, the young man in charge was named Brandon. When I revised my original story, I frequently chatted with him. He was such a lovely person and treated us “older” folks with so much compassion.

Now, the name Brandon no longer conjured up images of my student but of the man I wanted to adopt as a grandson. (I found out many residents felt the same way.) I told him about my story and the reason I chose a different name for my guy.

Brandon left a few months later, and in a note he wrote me, he said, he would always remember that I changed the name of a character in my novel because of him, and he hoped he could live up to my high opinion of him.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I wrote my first book when I was 41. Many authors I know say they were interested in writing from an early age. Not me! I had negative experiences about writing in high school and it took me a long time to overcome the criticism and venture into creative writing. My first book was published 10 years after my first feeble attempts. I had a lot to learn about writing fiction and had limited time to write. Raising a family, supporting my preacher husband, and working full-time in the public school system, took precedence.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

First, I develop my characters, jot down basic plot points, and then follow a ritual or a quirk. I have OCD tendencies and have to adhere to this little ritual. I use a piece of colored copy paper and write the alphabet down the right-hand side of the page. When I choose a name for a character, I place a checkmark to the left of that letter for a first name or to the right for a last name. That way I don’t use the same letter too many times. I also like to use unusual letters such as Q, Y, or Z. (I haven’t used X yet.) And I make sure to use a few vowels. I get confused when I read novels where three or four characters’ names all begin with J for example. Maybe it’s just my ‘old’ brain.
In the space to the left of my list, I write the characters’ names and their relationship to the plot. Yes, I know there are computer programs that will do this, but I’m old-fashioned and use paper and pencil. A quick glance and I can locate a name. When I have all my basics on paper, then I can get on with the story and add names as I need without duplication.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Is there an in-between stage? A plotster, maybe? That would be me. I have a basic plot in mind. I jot down major events I want to happen – yes, I’m old-fashioned and use paper and pencil and not a computer program, and I know how I want the story to end. When I write to move the plot forward or to flesh out the characters, I keep in mind my basic plot points and make sure the three threads – romantic, suspense, and spiritual are addressed. As other authors can confirm, a character sometimes leads the story in a different direction. Sometimes that direction is an improvement on what I’d planned!

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

When I left home in Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe in Central Africa) at age 17 to attend a Christian University in Arkansas, my Church family gave me a farewell party. One of the elders read Psalm 121 from the KJV. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord,” That Psalm, especially the first verse stayed with me all during my terrible homesick days and months.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

I’d like to meet Jane Austen. Now, this might seem like a contradiction but I haven’t read any of her books, however, I’ve watched several adaptations of her novels. The reason I chose her is because I recently visited the city of Bath in England and participated in the Jane Austen Festival.
The third novel in my trilogy From England With Love and…Treachery is titled: Meet Me in Bath at the Jane Austen Festival. While in Bath recently, I visited the Jane Austen Center and learned so much about the author. She didn’t have a life of privilege and her books didn’t reach popularity during her lifetime. I want to know what inspired her to write fiction and what kept her going even when her first books were published anonymously. She died at age 41.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write. Write. Write. Read craft books. Attend workshops and conferences, but write. If you want to learn to play tennis, you can read all the instruction manuals in print, you can watch matches all day long, but the only way you will become a good player is to get on the court and practice. So practice writing. And join a critique group.

Fiery and quick-tempered, Meryn chafes under the curfew and other restrictions to her freedom. Jesse is equally amused, intrigued, and terrified by her spirit, knowing she could end up in prison if she shows defiance to the wrong soldier, namely Lieutenant Gallagher.

Jesse watches out for Meryn when possible, although she wants nothing to do with him. His worst fears are realized when she commits a crime he cannot protect her from. Now they both face an uncertain future and the very real threat of losing everything, including their lives.

With time running out, Jesse works feverishly to convince the authorities to show leniency—and to convince Meryn that love can overcome any barrier that lies between them.

About the Author

Sara Davison is the author of The Night Guardians, The Rose Tattoo, two sparrows for a penny, and In the Shadows series, as well as the standalone, The Watcher. A finalist for more than a dozen national writing awards, including the Christy Award, Davison is a Cascade, Word, and two-time Carol Award winner for romantic suspense. She lives in Ontario with her husband, Michael. Like every good Canadian, she loves coffee, hockey, poutine, and apologizing for no particular reason.

More from Sara

Most, if not all, great fiction begins with the question, “What if?” This is likely truer for The Day Draws Near Series (formerly The Seven Trilogy) than for any of my other stories.

The seeds for this series were planted as I worked my way through a study on Revelation at our church. Each of those seeds represented a what if question.

What if the Bible was outlawed and taken away from believers? What if restrictions such as a curfew or being forced to wear an identity bracelet were placed on Christians? What if the consequences for not following those restrictions became serious, even deadly? What if publicly declaring that you were a follower of Jesus Christ made it harder to buy or sell items? What if the churches were closed and believers forced to meet underground? What if teaching your children from the Bible meant you risked having them taken away from you? What if all this happened in Canada and the US in the very near future?

And the big question the entire series asks is: What if we are not ready?

Those seeds grew into the characters and storylines that make up the dystopian romantic suspense books The End Begins, The Darkness Deepens, and The Morning Star Rises.

The Day Draws Near Series is a revised and updated-with-new-content version of The Seven Trilogy, originally released in 2015 and 2016. While I don’t for a moment claim these books are prophetic, between their original release and now, many of the things that happen in the series, including a global pandemic, have since come to pass.

My hope and prayer for each book in this series is that readers will be left with a deeper awareness that time is short and that we are living in a society increasingly hostile to Christianity and in a world of darkness that hates the light. However that hostility and hatred plays out, life will become more difficult for Christians in the future, as the Bible clearly claims.

However, the tone of the book and what I pray readers will take with them is one of peace and hope. The most powerful message these stories convey is that there is no need to be afraid. God’s ultimate plan of redemption and reconciliation is playing out in front of our eyes. Nothing can thwart that plan. Nothing can happen that God does not allow.

Above all, every believer can know with absolute certainty that, whatever happens in the future, we will never face it alone. God will be with us, watching over us and giving us the strength and the courage to endure to the end.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I know the exact moment, in fourth grade. We had gone on a class trip, and when we returned, we had to do a write-up about it. My story was chosen to go in the school newsletter, and to this day, mumble mumble years later, I can still remember how it felt to see my words in print and know that others were reading them. I knew then that was what I wanted to do with my life.

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

I have to name more than one here. Fellow Canadian Janette Oke was certainly one, as Love Comes Softly was the first Christian fiction I read that had a deep impact on me. She really paved the way for the Christian fiction writers who came after her. Madeleine L’Engle for her incredible ability to create and take me to other worlds. And Angela Hunt, a brilliant writer who isn’t afraid to write books that are different than the usual Christian fiction, to push boundaries, explore, and try new things. I have endeavoured to be like that with my own writing.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I’m the worst at having a regular schedule. I am in my office working whenever possible, but if my husband or kids want to talk or go for a walk or friends ask me to go for coffee, I always want to be open and available for those moments. I’m definitely someone who likes to work on a flexible schedule.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Can I be both? I do like to know the beginning and the end of the story before I begin. And I like to have a rough idea of how I am getting from one point to the other. Along the way, though, the story and characters often take me down paths I did not foresee, which keeps the writing fun for me.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

A friend has a cottage on a lake, and three of us go there to write a few times a year. Those are always my most relaxing, productive times. I love being in my office with my “puppies” (14-year-old cockapoos), too, though. Definitely my happy place.

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

I don’t write historical, and I don’t read a lot of it either, although there are a few regency authors I enjoy. I have always written contemporary and that is the majority of what I read as well. Not sure why, except that with the genre I write – romantic suspense – the danger and excitement feels more real and immediate when set in the present (or, in the case of The End Begins, slightly in the future).

Describe your book in five words.

Exciting romantic sobering plausible hope-full

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

For some reason, I relate far more to my male characters and find them much easier to write. Jesse, the hero in The End Begins, is no exception. I feel for him because he is so torn between the woman he loves and the God he wants nothing to do with. He cannot have one without the other, but surrendering to God will put his career and life in jeopardy. Although he is an unbeliever, he is a truly good man who is willing to take enormous risks to protect the people he cares about.

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

I love doing that! Now that I have a few series out, I am starting to cross over between them, and readers of all my books often comment that they loved seeing characters from another series pop up in my stories. That’s a lot of fun.

What are your hobbies?

When I’m not writing, I love to walk, watch movies (especially old black and white ones), have coffee with friends, take road trips, spend time with family, play games, and, of course, read.

What is your favorite book?

It’s a toss-up between A Wrinkle in Time, which had a huge impact on me as a young reader, and The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley. Both authors have the ability to create a world in which the reader truly feels as though he or she is right there (and doesn’t ever want to leave).

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Hmm. For a long time, I resisted getting a Kindle, but now that I have one, I rarely read any other way because it’s so convenient. It’s not the same as an actual book, though, which will always be my first choice. I have recently gotten into audiobooks as well when I’m walking or driving. So, can I say all three, depending on the circumstances?

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

My favourite Bible story is maybe a lesser known one in the book of Joshua. Just as Joshua is preparing to go to battle against Jericho, he sees a man standing before him. Joshua goes over and asks the man if he is for them or for their enemies. The man replies that he is the commander of the Lord’s army, and he has come. Joshua then falls on his face before the man. Since the man does not tell him not to worship him, as an angel would, most biblical scholars agree this is Jesus, appearing in human form to Joshua to convey a message from God. That message is that He is there, with Joshua and his army. That He will protect them, fight for them, and divinely deliver their enemies into Joshua’s hands. I love this reassurance that, no matter what we are going through, no matter what we have done or has been done to us, we are never alone. God is with us always. He sees us and knows us, He fights for us, and He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. That is the theme readers will find threaded throughout every one of my stories.

If you could live inside a book, which one would it be?

Oh, that’s such a lovely thought. I think, as a good Canadian, I’d have to say Anne of Green Gables. I’m a small-town girl, and Avonlea, despite its many gossips, would be such a beautiful place to live a simple life surrounded by family and friends. I absolutely love Prince Edward Island too. I recently returned from a trip there and thought many times that it is definitely a place I could see myself living. Plus, you know, Gilbert Blythe 😊

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

The best piece of advice I ever got is one I often pass along to new writers. And that is, if you believe in your story, never, ever give up. This can be an extremely frustrating and discouraging business. There will be many reasons for you to want to give up and many, many times you will want to. But if you persevere, learn, grow, take feedback, study the craft until you can write with excellence (which honours God), and then market to the best of your ability and resources, you can leave the results in God’s hands, trusting that he will get your story into the hands of all those He wants to receive its message. And when that happens, the book will have been a success.

About the Author

Robin Patchen is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of Christian romantic suspense. She grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, the setting of her Coventry Saga books, and then headed to Boston to earn a journalism degree. Working in marketing, she discovered how much she loathed the nine-to-five ball and chain. After relocating to the Southwest, she started writing her first novel while homeschooling her three children. The novel was dreadful, but her passion for storytelling didn’t wane. Thankfully, as her children grew, so did her writing ability. Now that her kids are adults, she has more time to play with the lives of fictional heroes and heroines, wreaking havoc and working magic to give her characters happy endings. When she’s not writing, she’s editing or reading, proving that most of her life revolves around the twenty-six letters of the alphabet.

More from Robin

Back when I first started writing fiction, I used to worry that each story idea would be my last, that I’d never get another good one. Since then, I’ve learned that stories somehow beget more stories.

For instance, back in 2022, I created a character named Grant, who was secretly in love with his coworker, Summer. In the process of figuring out who Grant was, I realized he had five brothers. All I knew about them was that they grew up in Maine and one had a limp and blamed Grant for it.

I had no idea why.

Grant’s story came out in Courage in the Shadows, the ninth book in the Coventry Saga. Then I told his brother Daniel’s story in A Mountain Too Steep, book eleven in the same series, a bridge to the Wright Heroes of Maine.

In the middle of writing Running to You, the first book in that series, which is about Sam, I “met” his older brother, Michael, a CIA agent, and thought, wouldn’t it be fun if his girlfriend was kidnapped? Oh, and what if she was Middle Eastern? And what if she was taken by terrorists?

Well, crazily enough, that’s what happened. (It’s fun to be the little-g-god of my little story world, always submitting to the Big-G-God in the real world, of course.)

In Rescuing You, Michael heads to Iraq to rescue Leila and meets her twin sister, Jasmine, who’s also being held against her will. And their family has ties to terrorists, which gave me a great idea for the next book, Finding You, which takes place in Germany with Bryan, the brother with the limp.

After he and his beautiful heroine, Sophie, survive their plot, we head back to the US, which brings us to Sheltering You, my most recent release.

And now it’s getting really fun because Jasmine is hiding from her terrorist (and bigamist) husband, who’s searching for her and his unborn child.

See what I mean? Each story births the next.

You’re going to love Sheltering You. Derrick, the youngest of the Wright brothers, is already smitten with Jasmine, but he has no idea she’s married and expecting a child. And she might loathe her husband—so much that she ran from him and is hiding a half a world away. Even so, she’s married, and that means something. So no matter what she feels for Derrick, she can’t act on it.

The situation is complicated, and it just gets more complicated as the story progresses. Which is what makes it So. Much. Fun!

And guess what. This series isn’t over, not even close. We’ve gone through all the brothers, but there are more Wrights out there…cousins. I don’t know all their stories yet, but Alyssa’s is already coming together. It’ll release in the winter of 2025 with some familiar faces—good guys, of course, and maybe bad guys as well.

I hope you’ll check out Sheltering You and all the stories in the Wright Heroes of Maine series.

When romance fails the romance writer…

About the Author

Kathleen is an Okinawan-American. Born in Okinawa, raised in California, Florida, Mississippi, and Singapore. Her travels lend themselves to the settings in her books, and her large family provides fun fodder for her characters. She and her Pastor husband have eight adult children. Seven are married, blessing them with sixteen grandchildren, and more on the way! Her ethnically diverse family of 33 plus personalities presents many opportunities to write about God’s amazing love amid trials, tragedies, and blessings. He is the one true inspiration and hope for us all.

More from Kathleen

For some, Ransomed Peace may be a hard story to read. It was a hard story to write. But rest assured, it’s a romance, and I guarantee a happily ever after! One of my favorite passages in the bible teaches that beauty from ashes lends hope that rises from hardships. Ransomed Peace begins with domestic violence. By God’s grace, I’ve never been a victim of it, but someone very close to me was. It was long ago, and unfortunately, at the time, I had no idea how to help her other than to aid in her rescue and give her refuge from the situation. But even then, that wasn’t the solution. Fortunately, today, many programs, housing, and counseling are available for those who suffer this horrible crime, but it continues and can happen to anyone. I encourage victims to seek professional help. It is as close as the internet or your local church body. Here’s the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 800-799-7233.

In Ransomed Peace, the main character, Roxanne, is a victim. As in all my books, God is the ultimate answer to any problem. But just as Roxanne was urged to seek help, I urge all victims to take action. Especially preventative action. Drawing and staying close to the Lord through His Word, prayer, and relationship with other God-fearing believers will aid in avoiding toxic people. Together, we can learn to follow and obey God’s guidance, allowing us to make the right choices in relationships. Sometimes, such as in the case of children, a choice is not possible, but God’s help always is. As we step in and walk alongside victims, we have the opportunity to help them to seek Jesus. His solution is eternal.

In my Romantic Suspense books, I choose to write about difficult real-life situations because, as a Pastor’s wife, I’ve prayed and walked with many women. Nobody’s life is perfect or ideal, and everyone suffers something. A reader wrote to me once, sharing how my book had encouraged her to walk with the Lord in areas of her life she hadn’t thought about before. She was secure in her salvation, yet she said it wasn’t until she read one of my books that she realized that living a life of purpose in all areas was possible. And it is! That’s the non-fiction part of my books. Whether our difficulties are past or present, we always need to be pointed to God’s Word in everything, not just for bliss on earth, which is never going to happen, but for the hope of our future with Him in heaven one day.

Sometimes, we are victims of circumstance and are blindsided by a force we can’t seem to contend with. Sometimes, we suffer the consequences of violence because of a bad decision we’ve made, yet it is still unjustly deserved. Whatever the cause, God loves us, and Jesus knows and feels our plight. He lived it, and there is a way out. God’s plan is for us to live for His glory.

I pray my books will inspire all to seek Him and follow Him in every phase of life. “To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;” Isaiah 61:3. Giving Him the ashes from our tragedies so He can restore joy for His praise is to live with joy over the blessings, and to find joy in Him through our sufferings.

The Lord uses people to help us live a life worthy of Him, in good times and bad. But we can’t do it alone. That’s why I created Bay Town. A community that represents real life in some way. As you read the Bay Town Series, I hope you’ll be inspired and encouraged by the characters that help one another. Trustworthy authority figures like Chief Bert and Pastor Desmond and good role models like Melanie Thompson Brooks and Max Tippet. And you’ll love the little comic relief provided through Tina, Lyla, and Bethie Cook. At some point, you’ll meet the same people in each book and hopefully come to love them as I have. Each story is unique, and each stands alone, championing themes of hope! As you read the series, you’ll become a part of Bay Town. A community that lives to watch out for one another and purposes to love and serve God.

Author Interview

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m with the majority of writers as a panster. At least from those I’ve pooled! I’ve written all my published books by sitting down and pounding them out, but I’ve become a better writer by learning to plot, and I began using those skills in rewrites. I love to sit down and let the stories flow, but when I get stuck, I find that when I’ve written down a premise, defined some goals and motivations for my characters, and outlined a few chapters my story has more depth and flows better. Sarah Sundin explained that plotters spend a lot of time plotting and researching upfront but little time rewriting. Where a panster cranks it all out in the beginning and does a tremendous amount rewriting. Either way, she said we get it done!

Describe your book in five words.

A terrorized life, redeemed by God.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

In Ransomed Peace, the main character gripped my heart, but not at first. She grew on me. I had to write and rewrite who she was because neither my alpha-reader nor I liked her very much. Roxanne, an abused woman, was so filled with pain it oozed out of her. I feel the Lord leads me to write about real-life trials, and in this book, that trial was about domestic violence. Still, there’s more to a person than that violence, and once I explored Roxanne, I had to share that whatever the trial, God is always the answer, and separation from Him is often the problem. Not that she or anyone suffering is responsible for the abuse. No one deserves that. But the Bible says we all, like sheep, have gone astray, and we need to find our way back. And isn’t it wonderful to know that God always welcomes us back with open arms? He did Roxanne.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

I have so many Bible verses that I claim. I love the Psalms, especially David’s chapters, where he whines, complains, and cries out but ultimately praises and worships the Lord. It gives me such hope! But Philippians is my favorite book, particularly chapter two. The character of Jesus portrayed there just slays me.

But of late, I gravitate to the story of Jephthah in Judges. I had to study it in depth because it so bothered me that a man might kill his daughter due to a foolish oath. Thankfully, I believe he didn’t do that. Still, I learned of the importance of obeying and honoring God, but it’s His infinite wisdom and sovereign grace that always prevails. We need to know and understand the depths of His Word, so we don’t make foolish mistakes like Jephthah. I have an idea for a storyline for his daughter.

If you could meet one author, living or past, who would it be?

Emily Dickenson. I love her poetry, and I’m fascinated that someone can write about life and love with such depth but have little experience of it in the world. I have no doubt she suffered internally about life. I’m beginning to study her biography, and my heart aches for her, especially in later life. I’d want to hear from her about her faith.

Thank you, Sarah. Your thought-provoking questions make me wish I had more time to explore! It’s been a pleasure.

Readers Deserve a Reward

I may be unusual, or just plain weird, but thinking of my ending first is the common way I approach a new story. It seems to help me to know my destination before I set out on the adventure of writing a story. I can take any number of routes to reach my destination and wandering around and exploring detours is a lot of the fun of writing. But by keeping my destination in mind, I don’t get lost. Or at least, not easily.

The other thing I keep in mind about my ending is that it’s a reward for the reader. I’m relatively new to publishing and not well known. So when readers take a chance on one of my stories, I believe it’s my job to reward their risk with an atypical, satisfying ending. Now I do work hard to make the whole story satisfying with things like an attention-grabbing opening and tension-building scenes. But endings, I think, are special to readers. This is the part that lingers in their minds when they close the book–whether it’s a sense of satisfaction, like the pleased feeling you have after a delicious meal, or anger or exasperation because the ending let them down.

I work to make all parts of the ending satisfying–the climax, denouement or wrap-up, and the last lines. For the climax, readers of my mysteries deserve more thant just the good guys solving the puzzle and catching the bad guy. I plan an action-packed, suspenseful climax that has readers living the final confrontation with the main character and it resolves itself in a way that, I hope, surprises readers.

Denouements are so critical to mysteries, when the detective explains how he solved the case. But they can also be deadly dull because the explanation needs to be thorough to meet the expectations of mystery fans. So in A Storm of Doubts, I split up the explanation–a lot of it is revealed during the climax, so I don’t bore readers by piling up a discussion of the solution in one chapter.

The final scene and last lines are areas I spend a good deal of thought on. Even if this scene was my inspiration for the entire story, how it plays in my head and how it plays on the page are two very different things. I also think the last scene and lines have a certain rhythm to them, like the final bars of a song. My job is make the scene round off the story without staying too long in it.

So when you read A Storm of Doubts, I’d love to know what you think of the ending. Because you do deserve a reward.

Author Interview

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

Wow, that’s a tough one. I can’t choose just one, so I’ll give you several. Agatha Christie and Edward D. Hoch are a huge influence on how I plot. Rex Stout on developing a strong main character with a strong, unique voice. P.G. Wodehouse and Patrick McManus on humor. P.G. Wodehouse and C.S. Lewis on creating effective similies and metaphors. Melville Davisson Post and G.K. Chesterton on how to describe settings that come alive in readers’ minds.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Since I still have kids in school and work from home, it’s hard to establish a concrete schedule. No two days are alike. So I’ve learned to write wherever I have to be. I’ve gotten a lot written, waiting in doctors’ offices. I’ve written on the sidelines of a soccer game and in my car while waiting for soccer practice to end. I’ve written during numerous car drives. I even worked on a short story while sitting on a bench outside a junior high while waiting for my oldest to finish with the marching band one Friday night.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a bit of both. I usually think of my climax first. I need to have a goal to write toward. Then I’ll do some basic outlining of the beginning chapters. When I start to write, though, the outline may go out the window as I discover better plot points.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I prefer traditional books. I work so much on the computer that I need a break from the screen when I read for enjoyment. And I just love holding and owning physical books.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write what you love to read. And you have to be a reader to be a writer. If someone tells me they are writing a mystery, but rarely read them, then I know that person doesn’t understand what readers expect in a mystery. If you write what you love to read, you’ll know what readers want in a book, and you’ll love what you write. And be sure to have fun writing. All the advice on the writing craft and how to get published can suck the joy from this art. Don’t forget to have fun!

I’ve Got a Secret: Book Review of “The Guest” by B.A. Paris

If I were to sum up The Guest in one sentence, it would be Benjamin Franklin’s wise saying that “Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead.” This latest novel by B.A. Paris features her trademark twists and turns, upending things just when the reader thinks they have figured out the puzzle. It is always a pleasure to read a thriller that does not have an easy, obvious solution, but rather relies on subtleties and revelations. Also, despite containing potentially disturbing topics, the story is primarily psychological and devoid of gore. Three couples form the primary characters in The Guest, each with secrets of their own. Iris and Gabriel are the main focus, and through them, especially, readers see the debilitating effects of holding onto secrets, contrasted with the fallout of bringing those secrets to light. As with lies, secrets pile up: “It seemed to Gabriel that roots, like lies, were insidious.” Just how insidious, and just how far some might be willing to go to keep their secrets, readers will have to find out for themselves.
