Information Literacy Instruction

Librarians at FDU Libraries offer tailored library instruction sessions to help students build the skills they need to find, evaluate, and effectively use information. These sessions teach students how to navigate today’s complex information landscape, spot misinformation, and maintain academic honesty while also supporting their critical thinking and overall academic success.

We offer support with the following topics:

  • Introducing resources for background research and topic exploration
  • Creating appropriate and viable research questions
  • Identifying search terms and creating search phrases using Boolean operators
  • Selecting and navigating the FDU Libraries website, databases, and journals for research
  • Evaluating information resources for reliability
  • Citing sources in APA format, MLA style, and others
  • So much more!

We create customized lesson plans to ensure that our instruction sessions are tailored to your students and assignments. To request a session, please fill out a Library Instruction Session Request Form. Please be as detailed as possible and attach any relevant syllabi or assignments. A librarian will reach out to you to confirm your class time and details.

ACRL Framework & FDU Student Learning Outcomes

Our library instruction lesson plans are designed to align with both the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and FDU's Student Learning Outcomes to help students develop a deeper understanding of how information is located, created, shared, and used.

The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, the guiding standard for academic library instruction, outlines six core frames that guide how students understand and use information:

  1. Authority is Constructed and Contextual
  2. Information Creation as a Process
  3. Information Has Value
  4. Research as Inquiry
  5. Scholarship as Conversation
  6. Searching as Strategic Exploration

To learn more about how our lesson plans map to both the ACRL Framework and FDU General Education Requirements, please view our IL Learning Outcomes Mapping Document and our Lesson Plan Template:

Information Literacy Resources

Information literacy (IL) is the ability to find, understand, evaluate, and use information effectively. It means knowing how to ask the right questions, where to look for reliable sources, and how to tell whether the information you find is trustworthy. It also involves using information ethically, like giving credit through citations. Learn more with the following resources:
