Beginning February 12, 2026, all EndNote user accounts will be required to update their password every 180 days.
Here is what this means for you:
If your current EndNote password is more than 180 days old, you will be prompted to create a new one at your next login.
Going forward, you will receive reminders from Clarivate as your password approaches its expiration date.
To update your password visit EndNote's Forgot Password page. Once you get confirmation that email has been sent, check your inbox along your junk or spam mail folder for the email with the link to reset your password.
Notes:
If you do not use EndNote Sync or have an EndNote account, no action is required.
Your EndNote account is separate from your library or institutional account.
Check EndNote's Compatibility & Requirements page to make sure your operating system and word processor are compatible with the new versions.
It is best practice to uninstall older versions of EndNote before you install a new one. Be sure to back up your libraries, custom styles, filters, or connection files before upgrading.
The easiest way to backup your library is to go to File > Compressed Library > Accept default settings. This will create a compressed version of your Library, including all file attachments. The file will have a .enlx extension.
Be sure to exit all Microsoft Office applications before installing EndNote. After installation, open Microsoft Word to make sure the EndNote toolbar is installed and activated.
Windows
After downloading the EndNote installer .EXE file, double click to begin the installation process
Accept the default settings and agree to the license terms.
When you open EndNote for the first time, follow the prompts to install program updates.
Macintosh
After downloading the EndNote installer .dmg file, double click to begin the installation process.
The installer should open on your desktop.
Accept the default settings and agree to the license terms.
