Interlibrary Loan

A guide providing information about Interlibrary Loan and how to use it.

Interlibrary Loan Fees

Although Interlibrary Loan materials are often without cost, sometimes the lending library charges a fee to lend out the material. When making an Interlibrary Loan request you can decide the amount you are willing to pay- from $0 on up.

Even if you do not pick up an item with a corresponding fee, you will still be responsible for paying those fees.

Fees will be applied to your CIIS Library account.

Note: Outstanding fees of $10 or more in your Library account will block you from being able to check out CIIS Library materials.

Overdue Policy and Fees

Interlibrary loan rests on relationships of reciprocity between libraries. In order to stay in each other's good graces, it is sometimes necessary to assess a fine for overdue or lost items.

Overdue Items

  • Overdue notices are sent daily via email.
  • After an item has been overdue for 7 days, your ILL account will begin to accrue a fine of $5 per week for each late ILL item.
  • After an item has been overdue for 3 weeks, in addition to the $5 per week fees, your ILL account and your CIIS Library account will be locked. Thus you will not be able to request materials or check out books from the CIIS Library until you return your ILL books and fees are paid in full.

Lost Items

  • You will be billed the replacement cost that will be determined by the lending library.
  • Please note that ILL does not accept physical copy replacements.

ILL Copyright Information

To submit your request for an interlibrary loan, you must comply with the following Copyright Notice:

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
