In order to ensure equitable access to library materials for the entire CIIS academic community, please adhere to the following guidelines:
When borrowing Library material, the borrower accepts full responsibility for its return in good condition, on or before the due date.
Library materials should not be taken outside of the United States, in order to ensure that they can be recalled in a timely manner if necessary.
All books, e-books, CIIS dissertations/theses, audio visual materials and streaming media are searchable in the Library Catalog. Renewals and Holds can be self-administered on most items by logging into your library catalog account.
Print Journals are Library Use only (they do not circulate).
See the Circulation Matrix for details about lending periods and fine information.
Maximum Fees and Fines
To return library materials
There are three options:
CIIS Library - ATTN Returns
1453 Mission St.
San Francisco, CA 94103
To avoid late fees, items must be returned or postmarked by the due date. All mailed items are checked in using the postage date.
To avoid charges for damage to items while in transit, be sure that you pack items well in a box or padded envelope. Soft cover items should be packed with some kind of cardboard reinforcement.
Be aware that if you mail an item on or just before your due date, you will continue to receive overdue notices via email until we have the items in hand. Rest assured that once we have the items, and confirm that they are in good condition, they will be checked in and you will be credited any fines that accrued while in transit.
We recommend sending materials as Media Mail, which is the cheapest US Postal Service option for sending books and A/V materials that weigh more than 8oz. Due to their very high value, we require patrons to purchase insurance when shipping audio-visual materials back to the Library, or to ship via a method that includes indemnity to protect against loss or damage. Additionally, we highly recommend using Delivery Confirmation or another service to track and insure the books you send back.
Recalls
Damages and Replacements
If you notice that library material is damaged or is missing parts, inform Library staff before you check it out to avoid being assessed repair or replacement charges.
Items returned damaged – including:
are subject to repair or replacement fees (please see the Circulation Matrix). If the item is not repairable, the system defaults to a $85 replacement fee plus a $10 processing fee (or $150 for A/V material), but you are responsible for the actual replacement cost and processing fee.
Lost Items

How can I pay my fines?
Please know that we cannot accept payments for any accruing fines until all overdue items are checked in, so please return overdue items as quickly as possible.
If all your outstanding items are returned and you are ready to settle your fines, we can accept payments by the following means:
We now offer web payments!! Email us at library@ciis.edu and let us know you would like to settle your account. We will send you a Square invoice that you can pay at your convenience.
To make a payment by phone using a debit/credit card, please call 415-575-6180 during posted open or pickup hours.
Send check to:
CIIS
Library Operations Manager - Fines
1453 Mission St
San Franscisco, CA 94103
Please be sure to include a note or memo with your name and CIIS ID Number.
When the library is open, we can also accept cash, debit/credit card, or check payments in person.
Once your fines reach $10, Library checkout privileges will be suspended. If you reach $40 in fines, or carry fines in any amount for more than a semester, you will lose access to digital resources and a hold may be placed on your university account until the fines are settled.
