How to Cite AI Tools-

Ideas and words taken from sources must be cited. If it isn't your original thought or common knowledge, cite where you found it.

If a professor allows and requires you to use AI as a source, clearly mark content and ideas generated by the AI and cite it appropriately. Not acknowledging and citing it is plagiarism.

APA citations should indicate the AI tool as an author, the date of use, how it was used, and the tool's URL. For example, content provided by ChatGPT could be cited this way:

  • In-text citation:
    • (AI Company Name, year)
  • References list citation:
    • AI Company Name. (year, month day). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat]. Tool Name/Model. URL of the chat

  • For citing an AI tool generally, as in image citation:

    • AI Company Name. (year). Tool Name/Model in Italics and Title Case [Description; e.g., Large language model]. URL of the tool
