Essential Services
We support our seniors with services that allow them to live independently for as long as possible. With the help of our dedicated volunteers and donors, we are committed to continuing to improve quality of life for Chicago’s isolated seniors.
Food Bag Program
On the second to last week of the month, other resources can run low. LBFE provides Food Bags containing a week’s worth of food to 150 older adults in our program. Volunteers pack bags with pantry staples and fresh groceries, including a selection of protein. Every bag is customized to fit each elder’s specific dietary needs and preferences. Volunteers deliver the Food Bags during a friendly visit — nourishment for the body and the soul.
Year-round donations and food drives to benefit our food pantry help our shelves stay stocked with nutritious food that is easy for our elders to prepare.
If you or your group or workplace would like to collect nonperishable food items for Chicago’s seniors, please email Maya Heim, Food Pantry Coordinator or call 312-455-1000 for more information.
Social Work Support
Our Social Worker provides critical information and support to our elders. These services connect elders with vital community resources. The LBFE Social Worker also provides training for volunteers and staff in topics, such as grief and loss and end-of-life conversations, helping to ensure that we provide multi-level services to our older adults and support for our volunteers and staff.
Emergency Weather Assistance
Older adults are particularly vulnerable to weather. In extremely hot and cold weather, we reach out to make sure that LBFE older adults are aware of how to stay comfortable, safe and well-prepared. We connect them with community resources such as local cooling and warming centers. In emergency circumstances, we make special deliveries of essential food items to elders who can’t get out of the house.
