Copilot access & writing feedback

Introduction

We’ve compiled a list of tools, resources and example prompts you can use to improve your academic writing. These tools and prompts are designed to help you act on feedback and develop your writing - not to do the writing for you. At university, you should always use critical thinking and evaluation skills to inform your choices in an academic setting.

The prompts provided are examples only. The more specific your prompt, the more useful the output will be.

Before you use Generative AI tools, you must check your assignment instructions to confirm if you’re allowed to use Generative AI in your assessments. Requirements may vary between subjects. You must also consider the implications for academic integrity and your own learning and ensure you acknowledge and reference the use of AI tools. If you are unsure, please talk to the Subject Coordinator.

Before you use a prompt and submit text or information to a Generative AI tool, you should consider where the information is going and how it will be stored or used. The text you paste into Copilot - including drafts, ideas, and any personal details - is processed and stored on external servers. If you use Copilot while signed in with your La Trobe account, your inputs are covered by La Trobe's enterprise agreement with Microsoft, meaning they are not used to train AI models and remain within the university's data boundary.
