My Review Of Baron Samedi: The Last Rite

Baron Samedi: The Last RiteBaron Samedi: The Last Rite by Philip Stengel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. It was richly detailed and so beautifully written with a picturesque narrative. I read the novel in three days and as I read I could picture the story being made into a very entertaining, spine-chilling movie.

I loved the vividly painted New Orleans backdrop and the cast of characters. I loved and enjoyed the Supernatural depictions of spirits and loa. I liked the describe of glowing veves and dynamic forces of energy that were at play.

The characters were multi-layered and complex. They went beyond simple stereotypes. They had identifiable motivations, a backstory, and internal conflicts that drove their actions and made them relatable and interesting.

Again, I would love to see this book made into a film. I have had firsthand experience with papa legba, erzulie, and a distinct figure that favored baron samedi in a vision twenty years ago warning me of a relative’s death–and I can say the story had tones of authenticity that made it all the more reverent, enigmatic, and creepier.

My Review Of The Boyfriend

The BoyfriendThe Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The book is well-written. Freida is a very good writer. I enjoyed the twist of who actually turned out to be the killer.

I knew the killer wasn’t the two characters the story was leading one to believe because that would have just made things too obvious.

The Boyfriend is not at all a bad book. It was a good story and it was creative. Frieda’s talent is apparent.

However, it is not my favorite Freida book compared to what I have read so far as I expected a better turnout than the one that played out once the killer was discovered and a more satisfying ending–but that is just my opinion.

My Review Of The Tenant

The TenantThe Tenant by Freida McFadden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received an email to the new release of The Tenant then purchased it and started reading the book immediately. I could not put my mobile device down.

I was gripped from the start–never a dull moment. I loved the main characters, all three of them. I loved everything about the twisted character Krista–though I’d never want to meet her in person–I loved that crazy personality and how she went about things.

Krista kept things thrilling and exciting she was relentless. The story also had sharp humor to it. And that twist at the very end (epilogue) I think it is safe to say that I have found my new favorite author in Freida McFadden. Her books are the greatest!

I am getting ready to start on another one of Freida’s books.

My Review Of Do You Remember

Do You Remember?Do You Remember? by Freida McFadden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The very first book I read by Freida was The Gift which I liked. So, I checked out other books of hers that I purchased–Do You Remember being one of them that I just finished and another that I have yet to read–but am sure that I will whole-heartedly enjoy.

Do You Remember kept me interested from beginning, middle, to end. It was a page-turner. Very well-written and well-thought-out. I loved everything about the story. I kept anticipating until the very last page and epilogue and I was not disappointed.

This book was a really great read. I look forward to reading more of Freida McFadden’s novels.

My Review Of Remember Me

Remember MeRemember Me by Nelle L’Amour
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The very first book I ever read by Nelle L’Amour was All My Lies–which I absolutely loved–especially its killer ending!

After reading All My Lies I had to read Remember Me once I unexpectedly had come across the book online.

I found the beginning of the novel attention-grasping, daring, and exciting. Then it turned into an on-your-toes slow-burning anticipation of what would happen next during a fortunate occurrence bestowing the main character’s miraculous second chance at destiny.

The fast-paced edge and thrill of excitement picks back up towards the end when uncertainty, payback, and justice prevail in a satisfyingly kick-ass way.

The author is a very good writer and is able to keep one interested and continuously guessing apart from what the reader may already discern within certain parts of the story here and there.

My Review Of All My Lies

All My LiesAll My Lies by Nelle Lamarr
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I just read this book. I finished it within two days.

I loved everything about this novel. I liked the mystery (though my first thought of who the killer was early on in the very beginning turned out to be correct–that is just me I am good at keenly sensing and figuring out certain things) the story still held intrigue to cause the possibility of doubt and other potential suspects throughout.

There were unexpected and shocking surprises, especially toward and at the end that was gripping and that created impact.

I enjoyed the subplots involved in character portrayals that added further depth and complexity to the main narrative.

The author has great writing style and wrote an excellent, excitingly haunting thriller that I did not want to put down.

My Review Of The Husband

The Husband: An absolutely gripping psychological thrillerThe Husband: An absolutely gripping psychological thriller by Darren O’Sullivan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was looking for a faster-paced story with a more thrilling turnout of the villain that would leave a greater impact, yet those were just my expectations.

Overall, the book was well-written, a heart-felt depiction of a father’s profound love for his child/daughter, and an interesting read that held my attention until the end.

My Review Of The Officer’s Wife

The Officer's Wife: A True Story of Unspeakable Betrayal and Cold-Blooded Murder (St. Martin's True Crime Library)The Officer’s Wife: A True Story of Unspeakable Betrayal and Cold-Blooded Murder by Michael Fleeman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I first purchased the paperback version of this title in the year 2011 when I was reading books back to back from St. Martin’s True Crime Library. However, I did not get a chance to read this one back then. It had gotten thrown away.

After all these years later, I just read and finished the ebook and The Officer’s Wife was very good as I thought it would be just as the certain other true crime novels that I had read from the publisher at the time.

The story was very detailed and informative as it delved into the lives and minds of yet another account that involved sick individuals who went to the extremes–though in less gruesome methods compared to some of the other crime stories that I read in the series.

The only thing I was disappointed in was that the ebook did not show any photos of the crime scenes, investigation, evidence, forensics and suspects as the print books usually do.

My Review Of To Have And To Kill

To Have and To KillTo Have and To Kill by John Glatt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a loyal watcher of true crime shows during the eighties, nineties, and mid two-thousands with shows such as Forensic Files, FBI Criminal Pursuit, Manhunters Fugitive Task Force, and a host of other real-life documentary series I had come upon St Martin True Crime Library Novels at Barnes and Noble Bookstore years ago.

I had remembered the story of Melanie Mcguire from more than one crime show and her trial on Court TV. I purchased To Have and To Kill by John Glatt in the year 2011 (long after I first heard then had forgotten about the woman’s case) and stayed up all night reading the book.

It was so good and interesting. The St Martin line of true crime books had become my favorite back then.

My Review Of New Scary Stories to Read in the Dark

New Scary Stories to Read in the DarkNew Scary Stories to Read in the Dark by R.J. Lawrence
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Great Book Of Suspenseful Short Stories
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2024
I was on Amazon a week ago and came across New Scary Stories to Read in the Dark.

The moment I saw the cover and read the title the book sparked my interest. I had a feeling it would turn out to be a delightful read.

So, I went to read the book’s overview and ordered a copy.

I read the book in its entirety in one day and I really enjoyed the stories very much.

New Scary Stories to Read in the Dark is a page-turner. Very well-written and creative. At the end I was looking for more!

I liked the book from beginning to end and my favorite tales were Toothache, Invertebrate, The Natural High, and The Girl Who Lived.

I hope the author publishes another book of thrilling analogies like this one. And I am interested in the Claire Foley character from the final story–I must eventually check out Girl in The Rabbit Hole.
