About LatamChequea

LatamChequea is a network of fact-checkers from across Latin America, the United States, Spain and Portugal. It began in 2014 as an in-person meeting and currently brings together 46 media outlets from 20 countries.

The goal of this network, created and led by Chequeado, is to share experiences and tools that help improve the quality of public debate and foster collaboration among various media outlets in the region to increase the impact of fact-checking and the fight against disinformation on our continent.

Journalism

Online media outlets not only fact-check public discourse, verify viral content, and produce explanatory pieces on complex topics, but they also produce investigative reports such as “Los Desinformantes,” a special series coordinated by LatamChequea on various actors who have spread disinformation in the region. In addition, the network produces reports on the main trends in disinformation across the region.

Education

LatamChequea Education is the network’s working group on educational topics. It aims to strengthen the educational capabilities of fact-checkers in the region and expand Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Latin America, for example by disseminating various educational resources created by fact-checkers.

Innovation

LatamChequea Innovation is the network’s working group on innovation, technology, and artificial intelligence. The goal of this area of work is to strengthen the technological capabilities of fact-checkers in the region through the exchange of knowledge, experimentation, and collaboration among fact-checking organizations and other key actors.
