March 24 is a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies. This morning I had smoke salmon and scrambled eggs with my espresso. Then lunch with my colleagues of the tour company, they gave me a tiny cupcake which made me laugh. Then tonight we are going to dinner with dear friends. All day good wishes have come in, it is nice to be remembered.
This past week I and W. were forced to accept that we are now at an age when our friends fall ill or tragedy strikes. This is part of entering the final chapter of life, if there is such a thing, life being so random. This adjustment is very difficult to accept. I will not say more about this now, but it has made us cherish what we have and hold our old friends close to us.
Yesterday another tour, the weather was poor, and today the weather is very good. Oh well that is Mother Nature for you.
This was the Lighthouses tour and winery. The first lighthouse is Point Prim, the oldest one built in 1845 and it is also one of 2 in Canada that is made of brick and stands 60 feet high on the point marking the entrance to Hillsborough Bay and Charlottetown. Always a beautiful spot to see. Across the water is Nova Scotia.
The second spot was Wood Island Lighthouse c.1874, this is the port for the Ferry crossing from PEI to Pictou N.S. What I like about that spot is the ferry which comes in as we visit. Yesterday it emerged from the fog and glided into port. There was a slight drizzle and a strong wind. These lighthouses have to be repainted every 3 years. Wood Island has a large keeper’s house with 4 bedrooms. In total we have 61 lighthouses in PEI on the coast, all automated now, there is no keeper anymore, not since 1989. The Government of Canada Coast Guard maintains them 24/7. They have an important role to play.
The Ferry in port. NFL is not about football, it means
Northumberland Ferry Line.
I have another tour next week on Tuesday, no details yet on what it will be. But I have my notes and I improvise quite a bit. Given that my passengers have never been to PEI, I could say just about anything and they would believe it, but I don’t.
I was tired at the end of the tour but it was fun and I really enjoy this job.
Life is a patchwork of moments — laughter, solitude, everyday joys, and quiet aches. Through scribbled stories, I explore travels both far and inward, from sunrise over unfamiliar streets to the comfort of home. This is life as I see it, captured in ink and memory. Stick around; let's wander together.
