Devil’s Backbone
Here’s a shot of Devil’s Backbone in Loveland, Colorado – just south of my home. Taken at sunset, long shadows betray the change from day to night. Golden grasses tell their story as the seasons change from the last days of Autumn to the days when Winter’s snows arrive.

Fiery Furnace Fins
So what is a photographer’s muse? It’s that subject that keeps us coming back – looking for a new angle or different light. It’s the object of our affection seen through the camera lens that repeatedly fascinates. I have thought about this for some time. I would say that I have several muses, but my favorite is the red rocks of southeastern Utah – the Moab area. The wonderful orange-red set against stunning blue skies always intrigues me.
Here is a shot taken while on a guided tour through the Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park.

Shafer Trail, Moab
Whether it’s hiking in our spectacular Colorado Rocky Mountains, taking a road trip or Jeeping a 4 x 4 road, most of the joy for me is the journey. Here is a shot of Canyonlands National Park and the upper part of Shafer Trail which goes from the top of the Islands in the Sky District to the Colorado River. For anyone with acrophobia (or maybe not even!), this upper part of the trail can be quite harrowing. Further down the trail, one encounters rockier terrain which required me to get out of the Subaru and spot Peter as he drove so we didn’t inadvertently leave our crank case in the canyon! But we made it unscathed – as did the car.
I’m very excited as I just recently purchased a new 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which will get us safely over Shafer Trail and beyond!

Vedauwoo Trail
Living in an extraordinarily beautiful place, hiking is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. While it’s warmer near the plains, when one gets up a few extra thousand feet, it’s cooler and the skies exude an amazing shade of blue. This is “Summer Lovin'” to me! A hike at Vedauwoo Campground Area in Medicine Bow National Forest in southern Wyoming.

Vedauwoo Explosion
Here’s my offering: a shot in Vedauwoo Campground. A National Forest area in southern Wyoming, Vedauwoo hosts huge pink granite outcroppings surrounded by a literal plethora of wildflowers. I loved the contrast between this gathering of vibrant wildflowers (I’m thinking they’re a kind of lupine?) and the towering granite (somewhere around 500 feet tall, I would guess). This area is a spectacular place for a hike!

Devil’s Backbone
My sister Becky is visiting this week, and this past Friday, we went for a hike in one of my favorite local open spaces. Devil’s Backbone hosts a beautiful rock formation that looks very much like the remains of a large spine protruding from the ridge. Here’s my interpretation of “Between.” I call it “Sky Between the Rocks.”

The Story of the Rocks
This week’s challenge can be intepreted many ways, but I was intrigued by one of the lines in the prompt: “Put your National Geographic hat on and tell a story by documenting a moment in time through a single image.” Here’s my offering.
Last fall, my sister visited and she, Peter and I spent a full week in Moab, Utah. On Labor Day, we did a guided hike through the Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park – a fascinating area of rock spires and pinnacles that is so elaborate, the park service doesn’t allow people into its depths without a guide. We spent the morning with park ranger Allison who showed us how to jump over rock crevices and climb through narrow cracks and along the way, she stopped to tell stories of the geological history and the wildlife that thrives in this desert environment. This shot was taken during one of those stops and Allison shared a story of this beautiful place.

Corona Arch, Moab, Utah
On this day, Becky and I decided to do a hike together while Peter worked in the condo (his choice). One of the most beautiful arches in the Moab area, Corona Arch stands proud in BLM (Bureau of Land Management) territory. A hike of about two miles took us to this marvelous sight. It’s a challenging hike. To get here, we climbed up a steep rock containing small hand and foot holds carved into its side as well as a short crawl across a tilted surface whose edge dropped several hundred feet. Then we climbed up a short ladder, through a small crevice and onto this plateau…well worth it for this view!
