    I use a D5100 for astrophotography (https://www.astrobin.com/users/archcam/). I currently use a coldbox, but I would like to do some tests on the cooling of the dslr. I saw that you have found the PTP command with which to read the sensor temperature value. What command are we talking about?

      Hi, it’s a build-in test command from factory calibration tools. We extracted it and run that in the hacking suite a long time ago. It’s quite a challenge to implement that in standard libgphoto2. We need to alter library funtions.

    Hi, I have been trying to revive an old 35mm film reel camera of my father’s. I have used Raspberry Pi Zero along ( https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero-2-w/ ) with its HQ camera module ( https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-high-quality-camera/ ) to make things work.
    Even though the camera is working now digitally, the problem is that since the sensor is really small, the images are a bit zoomed and it’s really wiggly, I mean even breathing is making the image hazy due to movement.
    While googling, I found your camera project, I was hoping you can kindly guide me through this…

      “wiggly” – Are you referring to rolling shutter effect? I have not used ras pi camera due to its limited IO/bandwidth. If you want mechanical shutter to work with rolling shutter, synchronization is the key.

    I’m very interested in reproducing some of your work on the nikon D850 sensor. I’ve got a couple fpga dev boards laying around that would fit the bill. Are you releasing your source anywhere? As I can’t seem to find any reference to any of your board designs or source codes anywhere. Would it be possible for me to get access to any of this material? (for personal non-commercial use of course)

      Hi Oscar, unfortunately I do not plan to release the RTL code as many IP I made were for other projects. But I could build FPGA image for you if you provide pinout/IO mapping to your FPGA board. What dev kit do you have? Are you willing to layout the IO breakout board to suit your custom dev board?

        It is understandable that you won’t just release your rtl. Are you willing to share some protocol details and the schematics of your converter board. That would be enough for me to write my own RTL. A lot of the details are already documented nicely, but I’m talking about stuff like registers and addressing.

  6. So I bought a damaged d850. It was almost functional when u bought it. Then I took it apart. So now I am wondering if I can use the Sony IMX-309-AQJ and build a drone camera for photography. Or. If u still have the z, the sensor is the same lol. I tried to read the article but it’s a little over my head. If you could let me know your thoughts I’d appreciate it. Thanks

      Hi Chen, according to my camera archtecture spreadsheet, your A6000 should be using the IMX210 sensor and has 12 lane subLVDS interface. So yes, that’s certainly possible

    We are from China. Many people in our astronomical circle try to make refrigerated cameras. They use CCD sensors instead of CMOS sensors. We have a low-cost solution to avoid Dewing by using vacuum, and We can spend only about $100 to purchase the sensors of D850 . We hope you can provide technical information about the interface of this sensor. I are confident that we can solve other problems, we can cooperate to make the first CMOS cooled camera made by enthusiasts.

    I tried to leave a comment on one of your blog posts but I don’t think it worked!

    I’m a fellow camera enthusiast and embedded systems engineer working in the space industry. I love your work and never thought it would be possible for someone to achieve what you have with these sensors. I’m currently in the process of making my own fully featured hand held camera which is nearly complete.     For my next project I would love to use a full frame sensor thus finding your blog has been huge in unlocking using these large sensors. I might be able to share somethings with you as I have many datasheets for industrial Sony image sensors and a good relationship with GPixel and Framos.

    Running on ecp5 serdes’es with a similar sensor here. Is your SLVS core tied to a Xilinx implementation or does it manage its own input / clock recovery / deserialization? Typically to run on a FPGA without a hardware serdes ?

      Hi David, this SLVS-EC core is a specific design on Xilinx HPIO/HRIO architecture. I handles phase recovery, decoding, depacking using soft logic. The phase recovery has some hardened Xilinx block. The rest should be portable to other FPGA. But it requires IO speed to be comparable to Xilinx’s.
