It comes from the Old English genitive form which ended in -es, but in modern usage, what's the point of the possessive apostrophe, anyway? I guess it's to prevent mispronunciation in text when 1) an added 's' would close a syllable, changing vowel length, or 2) the word ends in 's' already, creating confusion:
- Ches motorcycle was his ticket to freedom. (Che's)
- Marys lamb is a familiar symbol of childhood. (Mary's)
- I stopped by Mr. Joness (or Jones) house. (Jones's or Jones')
- Both of our printers ink is out. (printers')
Not to mention pronouns! English is a HOT MESS, that's what. ♥

Matt and I went on a trip down the street this morning to the farmers' market, but we were thwarted by marathon runners and traffic cops blocking roads for this totally random marathon. I mean you leave the house to get some fresh-picked salad mix and you can't because there's a MARATHON. I love leftist, healthfoody little Charlottesville.
ANYWAY: we decided to go to Crozet instead, which took us on a pretty drive, but Crozet was looking particularly shabby and country-ghetto. Fortunately we found a nice park with a pond and a big fat TURTLE. We had sammiches from Bellair market and they were delish. On the way home we saw a BALD EAGLE. A freaking BALD EAGLE. And then a groundhog! A fat one! And a big shaggy sheep with horns! My joyous squeals were heard for miles.

While making my new Dean and Sam icons, I learned that searching for occult symbols on Google images can lead you to all sorts of unsavory websites. But I also found THE BEST THING EVER: fromoldbooks.org, where you can search tagged public-domain images from tons of old books, including the Key of Solomon. The graphic designers working for Supernatural totally RAID this stuff. I love it when the boys look at some old book or photograph on the show -- someone made that just for the show, and they have my DREAM JOB.
Fun links for the day:
A town in the UK called Lunt considers changing its name to reduce graffiti on its road signs. Heh.
That reminds me: Why comic characters are never, ever named "Clint."

I thought I was burned out on this election, but -- the text of Barack Obama's speech. It's long, it's surprising, it's keenly critical of race discourse in America. I'm just not USED to public figures being unafraid to sound smart, to be smart. I feel confused.

From Wired, How To: Terminate a Terminator, a discussion of the weapons one might employ against a cyborg, and obvy written by a compete nerd. Love! Link from

the_grynne has Kyle Reese casting info for the fourth Terminator movie! EEE!
There are so many delicious actiony movies in the works for 2008 and 2009. Many of them awesomely BAD. And by bad I mean GOOD. Let's review:
Terminator 4. OH YES.
The Dark Knight. Of course.
Sequel to The Italian Job, titled The Brazilian Job. Serious.
New James Bond movie, HBP (Snape!), lots of others. Here is a list of expected blockbusters.
Then there is the new GATCHAMAN MOVIE (2009), for which I am JOYOUS, made by the animation team that did TMNT a couple years ago. Here is some promo art from the movie. OMG! They're also doing Astroboy. Whatev. GATCHAMAN! NINJAS OF SCIENCE.

- "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." Fans need not worry: Sources say that "Terminator" will be back. Fox executives like the creative product and thought the finale's performance last week was solid. The network also spent a considerable amount marketing the show, giving Season 2 some cost benefit. Also: The fourth "Terminator" movie comes out in 2009, and as "The Simpsons Movie" proved, there are promotional advantages to film-TV synergy.

Technically I have a sub-prime loan, because in order to get a mortgage after not having worked for over three years, we got a "no-doc" loan - based strictly on house…
