How a Florentine orphanage rescued thousands of children and revolutionized childhood education amid the splendor of Renaissance art.
Among the wonders of the Italian Renaissance and its inspired humanism was Florence’s Hospital of the Innocents, Europe’s first orphanage for abandoned children. In an era when children were often trafficked or left to die or roam the streets, an orphanage devoted to their care and protection was a striking innovation. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and a symbol of Florence’s cultural and architectural brilliance, the institution known as the Innocenti became a haven for more than 400,000 children across five centuries.
With deep knowledge of the literary and artistic environment in which this new understanding of childhood flowered, Joseph Luzzi explores how the Innocenti taught young children mercantile skills, rudimentary literature, and even, for a select few, the arts. Of course, he also does not shy away from addressing the flaws in the new institution’s pursuit of its high-minded mission, especially its struggles with rampant disease and political upheaval. All told, Luzzi gives readers the first comprehensive “biography” of a groundbreaking humanitarian institute that shaped education and childcare for generations to come.

Rescheduled from January!
________________________________________________________
This is not your typical book talk!
Resonant Minds: The Transformative Power of Music, One Note at a Time explores how music can be used as a practical, everyday tool for emotional regulation, focus, and connection—grounded in neuroscience, brought to life through storytelling, and felt through shared experience.
In this interactive event, co-authors Sara Leila Sherman—musician, educator, founder of Mozart for Munchkins—and Mort Sherman, longtime educator and national leader in public education, bring together two generations of insight into how music supports mental wellness across the lifespan. Together, they bridge research, lived experience, and reflection to make the science of music accessible and meaningful.
Through live piano and voice, guided listening, audience reflection, and science-backed strategies, Sara leads participants through a live, immersive experience—inviting you to experience music not simply as performance, but as a resource you can carry into daily life.
Participants will explore simple yet powerful musical tools—from “breathing with Bach” to groove-based activities and shared listening moments—that can shift mood, release creativity, and foster connection. Along the way, Sara and Mort share behind-the-scenes stories from the book and insights into how music engages the brain and nervous system in real time.
The event also features guest musicians—from Broadway artists to conservatory-trained instrumentalists to Stonington’s own Nora Fox—who help bring the book’s ideas to life through collaborative, live performance.
No musical background required—just curiosity, a willingness to listen, and an openness to experience how music can support focus, calm, and connection in everyday life.
Click here to purchase the book! Books will also be available for sale at the event.
