Blood, blood, glorious blood

Went to go see Sweeney Todd with various people today. It was a very Tim Burton-esque musical, with lots of overly red blood.

Thus inspired, I headed off to the blood centre in Newtown afterwards to donate. Apparently I have special blood! It's O-, which means that anyone can receive it (rather useful when you don't have time to test someone's blood to see what type they are before starting a transfusion...), and I've never had the mysterious virus that most people have had without realising it. It hangs around in the blood stream, so the blood of these people then can't be used for premature babies. I have special prem baby blood! Which they are always desperate for.

And it took me under six minutes to donate. I am so screwed if I ever sustain a heavy injury away from medical care.

I'm home!

And Wellington put on a tropical cyclone just for me. The weather was so hot I wore a skirt.

So, a run-down of the journey backCollapse )

I'm just about to upload all my photos, and will make a post when I'm done.

So I suppose that little thing called Christmas deserves an entry

Christmas here was an overnight thing, lasting from the evening of the 24th until lunch on the 25th. Both days involved a lot of food.Collapse )

Science-fiction. As if it isn't geeky enough already....

So, these holidays I have been straying from my usual reding material to more science-fiction. And the more I read of it, the more it makes me think of physics. And astrophysics.

I still can't decide whether or not a space station would need fuel to maintain its "gravity". And not to fall into whatever large object it's orbiting's gravity well. And I am really very tempted to go off on a ramble about centrefugal force and the lack of air resistance which means that fuel wouldn't be needed to maintain motion, because there'd be nothing to stop it, so it would keep spinning...

Anyway. I am aware that some in our midst are on holiday and really do not want to be thinking about physics. So I shall remain, in my solitary geekiness.

But I want to know about the fuel!

Right. I am resisting. Resist the science, Johanna, resist the geekiness.

Maybe a career in astrophysics is in my future? :look
