Marble Processing
Marble processing: finishes and tools
Marble processing combines craftsmanship and industrial innovation, transforming raw stone into elegant and functional surfaces. With the use of manual techniques and advanced machinery, marble, granite and other natural stones are processed by marble workers, producing products for floors, wall coverings, stairs, kitchen and bathroom tops, for both indoor and outdoor use, in construction, furniture and funerary art.
Marble processing stages
- Extraction: marble is extracted from the quarries in large blocks using diamond wire and disc machines.
- Sawing: the blocks are processed into slabs or smaller elements using diamond wire saws, wire saws and block cutters.
- Processing: marble is cut with bridge saws, shaped with CNC machining centres and polished with automatic or manual polishing machines (hand polishing).
- Surface finishes: marble can be bush-hammered, sandblasted, brushed, polished depending on the desired effect, as well as being suitable for carving and engraving.
Types of marble finishing
- Honing: makes the surface smooth but matt, ideal for a natural effect.
- Polishing: gives a shiny and reflective appearance, enhancing colours and veining.
- Brushing (or antiquing): creates a velvety texture and a worn look, ideal for classic or rustic environments that recall the charm of ancient stone.
- Bush-hammering: produces a corrugated, non-slip surface with a characteristic hammered orange peel effect.
- Sandblasting: produces a rough, speckled texture, increasing slip resistance.
- Resin and filler: the application of resins or fillers closes cracks, pores or crevices, improving both the aesthetics and the strength of the material.
Each finish is chosen according to the final application, guaranteeing the ideal solution for floors, walls, stairs, kitchen and bathroom tops, both indoors and outdoors.
Marble processing equipment and tools
Marble processing requires specific tools to cut, grind, polish and finish the surface according to the desired effect. Here are the main tools and equipment used by marble workers:
Cutting and shaping tools
- Diamond cutting discs: ideal for precise cuts in marble, granite and natural stone, compatible with table saws, bridge saws and grinders.
- Diamond grinding discs: designed for quick, clean cuts with angle grinders.
- Diamond discs: perfect for precision finishing and working on small surfaces.
- Diamond grinding wheels: used for working on edges, making grooves and decorative details.
- Drill bits and core drills: for drilling marble, granite, stone and porcelain stoneware.
Tools for grinding and polishing marble
- Hand abrasives: for hand crafting and finishing.
- Abrasive discs for grinders: useful for sanding and surface preparation.
- Abrasive paste and Waxes and Felts: Polishes, waxes, and polishing felts to achieve shiny and protected surfaces.
- Backing pads for grinders: holders for abrasive and diamond discs, used with angle grinders.
