How QR Codes Work

QR (Quick Response) codes are two-dimensional barcodes that store data in a matrix of black and white squares. Unlike traditional barcodes that hold data horizontally, QR codes store information both horizontally and vertically, enabling them to contain significantly more data in a compact format.

The Anatomy of a QR Code

Every QR code consists of several key components that work together to ensure reliable scanning:

Error Correction Levels Explained

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction, which allows them to be read even when partially damaged or obscured. Our generator offers four error correction levels:

Common QR Code Applications

Marketing & Advertising

Add QR codes to print materials like brochures, posters, business cards, and product packaging to bridge the gap between physical and digital marketing. Link to landing pages, promotional videos, social media profiles, or special offers.

Restaurant Menus

Create contactless digital menus by placing QR codes on tables. Customers can scan to view the full menu on their phones, making it easy to update prices and items without reprinting physical menus.

Event Management

Use QR codes for event tickets, check-ins, and information sharing. Attendees can quickly access schedules, maps, speaker bios, and networking features by scanning strategically placed codes.

WiFi Access Sharing

Eliminate the hassle of sharing complex WiFi passwords. Create a WiFi QR code that guests can scan to instantly connect to your network - perfect for homes, offices, hotels, and cafes.

Payment Processing

Enable quick mobile payments by generating QR codes linked to payment platforms. Customers scan to pay, reducing transaction time and the need for physical payment terminals.

Product Authentication

Combat counterfeiting by adding unique QR codes to products. Consumers can verify authenticity and access product information, warranties, and support resources.

Best Practices for QR Codes

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between PNG and SVG formats?

PNG is a raster format best for digital use at a fixed size and for printing at standard resolutions. SVG is a vector format that can be scaled to any size without losing quality, making it ideal for large format printing, professional design work, and situations where you need multiple sizes from one file.

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes generated by our tool never expire - they encode data directly into the code. However, if your QR code links to a URL, the destination page could be removed or changed. The QR code itself will always work as long as the destination remains accessible.

How much data can a QR code store?

QR codes can store up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters. For URLs, this is typically more than enough for even long links. However, more data means denser codes that are harder to scan, so it's best to keep content concise.

Can I add a logo to my QR code?

While our generator creates standard QR codes, you can add a small logo to the center after downloading by using image editing software. Use High (H) error correction level to ensure the code remains scannable with a logo covering up to 30% of the code area.

Why won't my QR code scan?

Common reasons include: insufficient contrast between foreground and background colors, the code being too small for the scanning distance, damage or distortion to the code, missing quiet zone (white border), or the encoded URL being broken. Try regenerating with higher error correction or ensuring adequate size and contrast.

Is there a limit to how many QR codes I can create?

No, our QR code generator is completely free with no limits on the number of codes you can create. All processing happens in your browser, ensuring fast generation and complete privacy for your data.

Are the QR codes created here free for commercial use?

Yes, all QR codes generated with our tool are free for both personal and commercial use. You own the codes you create and can use them in any way you choose without attribution requirements.
