Full points for adorability: Finnish swimmer Ari-Pekka Liukkonen showed the athletes accommodations in the Olympic village in London. He was quite impressed that he had been provided with an extra long bed to rest his 208 cm/6'10 frame in (without him having had to ask for it). The problem? He's never had a long enough bed in his life so he couldn't sleep before he had scooted down enough so that his feet were dangling out of the bed, just like they do at home :)
And, talking about heights, Bramble is now 11 and nearly my height *boggles' It's been quite bizarre to watch her eat lately: six toasts, two apples and half a carton of milk for breakfast, and repeated eating performances every two hours for the rest of the day, to be topped with twelve hours of sleep. This summer's growth spurt is now done with and she's back to living on fresh air and two cherry tomatoes a day. Too bad she's outgrown ALL her clothes and shoes, again *sigh* Capris and flip-flops are in, aren't they?

Last Thursday, on India's Republic Day, the Finnair flight to Delhi boards as expected. At the last minute the doors open again, and dozens of stewardesses (and one pilot) pour in. The music starts, and the stewardesses start a Bollywood dance. Teehee!
And while I'm at it, the latest (pre)teen thing here: 13 yo Robin, with his well sung but but rather plastic "Frontside Ollie". A boy with brown eyes is hot currency here, believe me ;)
And that's what's going on in Finland. (What? What do you mean with "presidential elections"? The final round is in a week and OF COURSE we are going to have the first openly gay president in the world!)

(Not dead, just busy as always, and tired too, but that's no news either :)
Our latest Minister for Culture and Sport is Paavo Arhinmäki, a communist an avid fan of both team sports and popular music, with an unwritten opinion that high culture should go hang, or at least pay its own costs. As he's never visited the opera in his life, the entire staff of the Helsinki Opera made him a video, a rap video no less :) In the video the staff asks the new Minister to have an open mind, take the challenge and come visit, to see himself that opera is not just about red carpets but also about fine Finnish workmanship. The message besides, it's incredibly funny to watch world class musicians (for example Matti Salminen and Leif Segerstam) give their best at rap.
Opera rap
(And, while I'm at it, here is the guy (Matti Salminen) that starts the rap in the video singing "O Isis and Osiris" from Magic Flute *shudders* GOSH he's GOOD!!!)

What to do with a 2.5 kg pumpkin?
One of Bramble's home-grown pumpkins (moved to granny's yard after window-sill growing at home) has produced a decent sized pumpkin that now waits to become... WHAT? I've found recipes for pumpkin pies (are they any good?), and a recipe for pumpkin bread (that looks more like a sweet bun than anything else), even a recipe for pumpkin jam (with carrot, ginger, orange, cinnamon and citrus acid). I remember my parents making a thousand jars of pumpkin-lingonberry relish that we then spent what felt like YEARS eating (no more, please!). Bramble, the latest Potter fan in the family, of course would like to have some pumpkin JUICE.
So, what nice things can you make of pumpkin?

Watching young preppy men in front of our office building today (not ours, nope, ours don't bother dressing up that prettily) I came to wonder about the word "sports jacket". Doesn't it sound more like a jogging jacket, a jacket for lifting weights or, I don't know, a hunting jacket?
And then I continued wondering why we call it in Finnish "little jacket", as if it was somehow smaller than a suit jacket. You aren't even wearing the "little jacket" when your lady friend is wearing a "little black dress"!
One might also wonder what the difference between a blazer and a jacket is, or a blouse and a shirt. (And in Finnish, what is a "leninki" and what is a "mekko" *g*)
