Growing for Restoration, Agriculture and Conservation Education (GRACE)

The GRACE Garden Project features a one-acre organic farm located at the Kitsap Conservation District, with on-site demonstrations of conservation methods, low-flow irrigation design, and season extension techniques.  Since 2017, the GRACE Program has provided over 150,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for Kitsap County Food Banks with the assistance of Americorps members and a dedicated group of community volunteers.  The GRACE Program provides education for home gardeners and supports local community, school and food bank gardens with plant starts and technical assistance to help our community grow more healthy food.

Learn more about KCD's GRACE Program in this video workshop with its manager, Diane Fish. Diane explains Kitsap's support for food security and efforts to abolish hunger here at home.

What we do

ZucchiniWe work with food banks, community gardens and urban gardeners providing technical assistance to help them conserve natural resources, keep our water clean and grow more food. At the GRACE Garden we grow vegetables in our 96x30' high tunnel and outside garden year round for local food banks.

Quick Facts

Produce for foodbankProduce for foodbank: The GRACE Program provides over 20,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for the local food banks annually.  The GRACE Program hosts Americorps members and partners with the WSU Farm Mentor/Internship Program providing education for beginning farmers and on-site demonstration of climate resilient, sustainable farming practices.

Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP)

HarvestingThe Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP) Program connects food banks with local farmers by using grant funds to purchase fresh produce for hunger relief programs. Managed by the District, the F2FP program provides nutrient dense, healthy food choices for food bank clients using a combination of federal, state and community funding to deliver over 100,000# of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and eggs to food banks annually. A win-win for both hungry community members and local sustainable farmers, Farm to Food Pantry combats hunger, provides healthy food choices, and supports a vibrant local farm economy.

Farm to Freezer (F2FR)

The Farm to Freezer (F2FR) Program is a partnership with Kitsap Community Resources, turning gleaned, donated and rescued vegetables and fruit into soups, salsas and sauces for distribution to the food banks. These frozen, ready-to-eat items are nutritious, delicious and convenient for families needing a quick meal. The Farm to Freezer Project delivers over 10,000 pints to food banks each year and reduces food waste by keeping almost 20,000# of edible food out of landfills.

Many of the items are made using recipes from WSU SNAP-Ed and QR-Codes on the containers means families can make the recipes. Cooking videos accompany some of the soup recipes. Check them out at: https://extension.wsu.edu/kitsap/health/snap-ed-recipes/
