A creature from the time of the Gods, Rider is truly the Gorgon Medusa. Unlike her sisters, Stheno and Euryale, Medusa was mortal, fated to grow older and taller while her sisters forever remained young, and was cursed with the Mystic Eyes of Petrifaction. This made Medusa not only an outcast within her own family, but an outcast in the world, unable to look upon any creature without turning them to stone. And Stheno and Euryale would bully their sister, teasing her for her height and age, further cementing Medusa’s own isolation. She became quiet and withdrawn, keeping her own face hidden at all times. It was the betrayal of the Gods and humans that finally broke Medusa, her own bitterness and resentment towards her sisters and the world leading her to kill any man that entered their island. Years of slaughtering men transformed her into the monster of legend, and eventually killed her own sisters in her savage bloodlust. Death proved to be Medusa’s true release from her tortured life.
When called upon for the 5th Holy Grail War, Medusa had no wish of her own to be granted. She heeded the call to become the Rider because of the one who summoned her.
Silent, sultry, vigilant, Rider is an incredibly hard woman to read. Often times quiet, with her eyes and emotions hidden from the world, it is easy to dismiss Rider as just cold and calculating. Of course, this is exactly the impression she intends to give to her enemies. She has absolutely no qualms in killing: killing other Servants, killing Masters, draining and killing innocent bystanders to fuel her Prana, since her Master at the time, Matou Shinji, was incapable of providing it himself. Rider is deadly in a fight; though she is at a disadvantage because of her Master, Rider instead uses the battlefield to her advantage. She can keep her calm and formulate strategy in the most heated of battle situations, and knows exactly when to retreat.
What is most projected is Rider’s strong sense of duty as a Servant and her undying loyalty to her true Master, Shinji’s adopted sister Sakura. This is usually surprising, given her outwardly cold and dismissive appearance. When it was decided that Shinji would take Sakura’s place in the War, Rider begrudgingly accepted her Master’s decision, since Sakura did not want t participate in the War herself. Though Shinji was her new Master, Rider held no love for the boy whatsoever, seeing him as predatory and vile, someone she was forced to hold her strength back for even when Shinji raped and tortured Sakura and herself. But nonetheless, she remained loyal and obeyed Shinji’s every command…until Shinji made the mistake of threatening Sakura’s life. Dropping all pretenses, Rider came to her Master’s protection with no hesitation, switching sides almost immediately.
With Sakura in the safety of Emiya Shirou, Sakura’s lover/the player character, Rider is able to drop her defenses somewhat, at least in Shirou’s perspective. Rider is actually quite kind and polite to those she is friendly with (though she openly states she will kill should Sakura ever give the word), her main reason for her initial hostility being Shinji’s order. She’ll engage in small talk if approached, even if her responses are usually short and to the point. She seems even awkward at times, though these times are few and far between.
As Rider, Medusa only wishes to protect her Master. To Rider, Sakura is the most important person and she’ll do anything to keep her Master safe and happy, even if it puts her own life at risk.
