character info.
character name: Demyx
canon & medium: Kingdom Hearts [II] / Game
age & species: Unknown, likely anywhere between 19 and 23 / Nobody
appearance: Demyx sports dirty blond hair, some bangs gelled up wildly in front and others draping his forehead for one reason or the other. His hair is a bit of a mixture of a Mohawk and mullet, and is easily the most recognizable feature about him (though when you’re in an Organization that requires you wear a black trench coat at all times it’s hard for many other features to show through). He has a thin face and big sea-blue eyes, and for the “runt” of the Organization he’s actually fairly tall. His shoulders are a bit too broad for the size of his frame as well.
timeline: During his fight with Sora
background/history link: what little of it there is
personality:
Demyx is not an exception to this rule, of course, but even from what little we see of him in the game, his “personality” consists of friendliness, nervousness, fearfulness, and someone who plays the kicked puppy card whenever he can get away with it. He is called out on his acting only one time by Sora in the game, and responds with an icy tone and immediately attacks right after, even though he had previously acted reluctant and disinterested in actually fighting. Demyx also demands that Sora recognize that Nobodies “do too have hearts,” even though their very nature as Nobodies contradicts this. Other times with the boy, he is seen to be anxious and quirky, which for the most part tricks the boy and his companions, who comment on how bizarre he is and so forth.
Around the other members of the Organization, however, his act for the most part remains intact. In scenes where the members are conversing amongst themselves, Demyx responds with a rather over-bearing confidence – quickly reversed once another member suggests that he may as well handle things if something goes wrong from then on out. Frequently he shoves tasks onto others when he can (away from the Superior’s eyes of course), out of either a general fear of the task or out of his abhorrent laziness – being a Nobody incapable of feeling true fear, the latter is likely more the case. Even despite the backpedaling to his faux-nervousness, he is nevertheless sent out to keep tabs on Sora, a menial task he would rather avoid. He keeps the act up, too, complaining all the while that they’ve sent the wrong guy and pretends like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
In the case of the Underworld, the falsities of his emotions seem to be null, as Demyx seems to be so scared of Hades and the whole Underworld scene that he completely ignores the boy and his comrades, instead completely focused on getting the heck out of there. Sora and his teammates are left bewildered at the Organization member running by them screaming – playacting being scared as a Nobody or not, he still puts his orders on hold in effort to run away and keep himself out of danger.
Overall, Demyx is the nicest person in the Organization – or at the very least has the potential to be, were his emotions genuine – and he’ll be the first to tell you that they are. He’s probably the only member of the Organization without a thousand different motivations and agendas, either. To say that he can’t fight, however, would not be entirely true as he proves to be a decent enough opponent. Demyx’s attacks focus on keeping the enemy as far away from him as possible, but in close quarters, anyone’s got him beat. What can anyone do with an overgrown sitar as a weapon, anyway?
Well, Demyx acts as though he’d rather just play the damn thing, anyway. The majority of his attacks come from series of notes and chords that allow him to control water – without the sitar, he has no true way to protect himself. Fighting with enchanted music suggests that Demyx’s “Somebody” had a great fondness for the instrument and creating music with it; why else would he wield such a bizarre, overgrown sort of weapon? The reason Demyx is a higher Nobody to begin with is thanks to his previous self’s strong will and personality, and this has thus carried over into the type of weapon he uses and exactly how he uses it.
In short, Demyx seems to be a quirky, silly, nervous, eager-to-please musician who just wants his heart back. But hey now, don’t go judging him on his “carefree” attitude alone – he IS a Nobody. You can never be too careful now, can you?
