Happy new year, or something.

Hey look I made a stealth Firefly AU for Old Guard, since it's all a part of the CECU (Chiwetel Ejiofor Cinematic Universe).

I'm not ready yet (for the light to dim) (6352 words) by kaydeefalls
Fandom: The Old Guard (Movie 2020)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Space, Alternate Universe - Firefly Fusion, (just barely but enough to tag it), Angst with a Happy Ending, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Reunions, Getting Back Together, discussions of trauma but never explicit, Alternate Universe - No Powers, POV Andy | Andromache of Scythia
Summary: Sci-fi AU. Years after they lost the war—years after she lost Quỳnh—Andy receives an encrypted message bearing a name no one else living should know. It's too much to hope for. She's going to answer it anyway. This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. Comment wherever you'd like.

Time for the end of year writing roundup! I've missed these, it's nice to feel like I've created enough new fanworks in 2021 to be worth the meme.

This year I wrote and posted: 12 fics and 1 vid, all for The Old Guard.

Should I be working on any of my exchange fics/vid right now? Probably! Am I doing an A03 stats meme to distract myself instead? You betcha!

Snagged this one from [personal profile] muccamukk. General idea is you go to your AO3 stats page and then average out the totals by your total number of works (mean, not median). Definitely shows a more diverse slate of fics than always picking your top 5 or whatnot. And my brain really likes playing with stats in this way, so.

I fiddled with the word count only, since of my 209 works on AO3, 31 are fanvids (which have 0 words) and I'm making the executive decision that those shouldn't count. Still counting them toward hits/kudos/etc, though.

(One thing I find fascinating is the ration of bookmarks to comments - like, obvs people are more likely to kudos than comment, but I hadn't realized how MUCH more likely they are to bookmark than comment.)

Sometimes you spend months chipping away slowly at a fic until it's finally done.

Sometimes you just have a rough outline marinating in your WIP folder for months and then write the whole damn thing in three days.

I don't make the rules, guys. Anyway have a Nile fic.

Vacation, yay? This is the first proper trip I've taken since pre-pandemic, which is simultaneously great and kind of terrifying. So, sure, restrictions have eased a great deal in recent months, but in NYC, everyone still wears a mask in stores and on public transit, and often on the streets as well. I am currently in Colorado, where NO ONE WEARS MASKS EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES apparently, which is just...freaking me out a bit. Like, yes, I am vaccinated, but not everyone is, and there's no way to know who is or isn't, so like...it just feels safer and more courteous to wear a mask regardless, at least in small enclosed public spaces where you have a lot of one-on-one contact (like, you know, grocery store). Instead everyone gives us weird looks like we're the freaks for still wearing our masks indoors. I do not like this kind of peer pressure. There's still a pandemic going on! The Delta variant is on the rise everywhere, and also specifically in this state! WHAT THE FUCK PEOPLE.

Am I the crazy paranoid one? I hate this feeling.

We're here primarily for family, and that part is fine, though I'm already exhausted (three days in) from having to play extrovert constantly. I'm just...not used to interacting with people anymore, apart from my wife and occasionally my parents or individual friends. Lots of people all at once is exhausting.

I'm gonna go back to work more burned out than I left it, aren't I? But hey, at least that's not a thing I'm thinking about this week. Work.

(It's mostly good, honestly. I just feel like I've stepped into a parallel universe and it makes me super uncomfortable.) This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. Comment wherever you'd like.

Summary:

Nicolò shakes him out of a fathoms-deep sleep to announce, incomprehensibly, "Venice! They're in Venice!"

Yusuf very nearly flails off of their bed, reaching for his saif, before his muzzy brain grasps the fact that they are not being attacked by mystery Venetians in the night. In fairness, it would not have been the first time.

Sure, it's 9pm and I can't quite focus on anything but am not ready for sleep, seems like a good time to knock out a few more of the June Something prompts.

Day 3: What's a favorite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?

...you know, now this is making me sad, because my first thought was about fannish friends I'm so glad I had a chance to meet in person but have since passed, and that's just...true but depressing to ponder. You know what, I'm really glad that I wound up at the same uni as [personal profile] newredshoes when we were both vaguely LJ friends in LOTR fandom, and that I actually stopped by the campus coffeeshop she worked at to talk to her, because I'm pretty sure she was the first RL friend I made through fandom. And between her just being an excellent person to pal around with and the confidence that experience gave me to occasionally reach out to other fannish friends later on -- yeah. That.

Day 4: What are the origins of your penname/username?

This one comes around every couple of years, and I have nothing new to add to the story. There's a waterfall, I was thirteen, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Still grateful I didn't pick a fandom-specific pseud, because this way I've been able to maintain the same fannish identity for...more than twenty years, oh god.

Day 5: Compare and/or contrast your very first fandom obsession and your very latest fandom obsession.

So that would be X-Files vs. Old Guard, huh? Apart from being a crossover I would actually love to read...well, there's both a supernatural element and a found family vs. the world mentality, which are common threads throughout most of my fandoms. Very different approaches to both, though -- in X-Files, it's all about the need to understand the unbelievable, to prove it, whereas Old Guard kind of doesn't give two shits about the why of their immortality. Which I find refreshing! In terms of shipping -- I imprinted SO HARD on Mulder/Scully, the push and pull of them, the somewhat unhealthy level of codependency they evolved into over the course of the (original) series. Endless UST, of course. In TOG, Joe/Nicky are the MOST established of relationships, and while their backstory has some similar dynamics (diametrically opposing viewpoints, albeit far more violently so), they're just so comfortable together, so casually warm and loving, and that's new for me in terms of just about any OTP I've ever shipped.

In terms of the fandoms themselves...I was too young in the XF days to really register a lot of the intrafannish dynamics, but I know there was a degree of toxicity between the shippers vs noromos, and then the wacky slashers doing their thing off to the side. It was a BIG and vocal fandom, which meant that there was more potential for drama, but on the flip side, it was big enough that everyone could kind of go to their own corners and have a thriving fannish ecosystem in their own niches and ignore the rest. TOG is one of the smaller fandoms I've been active in, and one of the more aggressively toxic -- although in fairness, part of that is simply the nature of modern social media amplifying the ugly way out of proportion. As with any fandom, it's a small but loud minority that creates most of the drama; most of us are just here to enjoy ourselves respectfully. I love that fandom is more likely to call out racism and misogyny now. I hate how virulently certain folks push back against that, or try to weaponize it. But what can you do? I try to listen to the good faith critiques and take them to heart in my own depictions of the characters, and to amplify the voices of POC creators where I can, but I can always do better.

Day 6: What's a fandom that you wish had a bigger following?

...that's definitely a monkey's paw wish right there. Look, I will always have a fondness for the History Boys fandom, but let's be real, it's better off small.

Day 7: What's the longest time you've been in a fandom. Not necessarily your oldest fandom, but a fandom that you started and still continue to read/write/create content for in some way.

I rarely truly leave fandoms; I still go through cycles every couple of years where I seek out old XF fic, for example. But X-Men is the obvious one for me. I started reading and writing fic for it in 2002 and have never really stopped -- I just go on pause for brief periods of time. It's just so infinitely malleable as a fandom. So many characters! So many versions of their stories! Mutant and proud.

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

Not my thing. Really, really not my thing. I find it OOC and irritating, and avoid it whenever possible. (There are always exceptions, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.) This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. Comment wherever you'd like.

I've seen a couple of people on DW posting this, and it seems like a pleasant way to try to engage more on DW, so: June Something prompt list.

Day 1: What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?

*flails in general direction of Old Guard*

I mean, so. That. New fandom hitting HARD out of freaking nowhere that now consumes all my waking hours. It's not surprising, really -- this is how I fall in love with fandoms, suddenly and hard. But definitely didn't see this one coming. I have mixed feelings about the fandom at large, because BOY HOWDY does it conceal a level of toxicity I've managed to avoid in most of my previous fandoms. But I'm here for the fic, and know how to ignore most of the Discourse (TM), and that suffices.

Day 2: You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them? Bonus question: What about adding a third to your OTP from a different fandom? Who and why?

Hrm. I'm gonna bypass Old Guard for this one, because I don't particularly like the options for creating an OT3 with Joe/Nicky as the base pairing. Andy would be my choice if pressed, but I really do read both of those men as gay (which, y'know, is extremely canon, though I very much respect headcanoning them as bi/pan), so that doesn't quite sit right; FUCK Booker, I do not want that dude involved.

So give me Steve/Bucky instead and I have a MULTITUDE of options for the perfect triad. Peggy, obviously, right off the bat; she and Steve complement each other so well (and their love is very real), and I think she and Bucky share a certain dark-edged pragmatism that helps to balance Steve's...everything. So WWII-era, that's the OT3. Modern era, either Sam or Nat (or BOTH, why limit ourselves to a triad once poly is in the mix?). Barbershop quartet all the way. Any configuration of those four pleases me greatly. This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. Comment wherever you'd like.

Because you know what fandom needs is more Old Guard/007 fusion fic.

Fun fact! I pulled the first fic's title from the Casino Royale theme of that name, but being a Beatles girl, all I ever heard in my head while writing it was THEIR "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)". Which means I've been mentally referring to the sequel as "look up the number" the whole time, and it also seemed, you know, appropriate to a Bond AU. But when it came time to actually find a title, I trawled through the lyrics for "Skyfall" instead to continue the Bond Theme Song trend, and, well. Guess what one of the lyrics is.

Close enough, is what I'm saying.

I don't even know what I'm supposed to use this DW anymore for apart from posting fic, but on the plus side, I continue to write fic to post, so that's nice? Work is super stressful at the moment. So I have found solace in writing a very silly modern!AU.

Fun fact: the general premise of this is based on the actual beginning of my relationship with my wife. Because sometimes you find yourself trawling for meet-cute prompts, as one does, and think to yourself, "that's cute, but did THEY ever make a pact at Pride to never sleep together?" and realize that your life might be more ridiculous than the average romcom.

Festivids reveal day! I made the least anonymous vid I could POSSIBLY have made this year, which is to say an Old Guard vid set to a Vienna Teng song, for [personal profile] cupidsbow. Like, I could not have been more obvious if I had actually signed my name to the anon version of this.

I did think, perhaps NOT a Vienna Teng song this year? Perhaps literally any other musical artist in the world? And I even had a Green Day song that was in the running for a while there. But let's be real, I have been storyboarding this vid in my head since roughly two weeks after the movie hit Netflix, you can't give me a lyric like if you're out there in the cold, i'll cover you in moonlight to match against Joe's he’s the moon when I’m lost in darkness and warmth when I shiver in cold and expect me to somehow NOT vid the thing.

It feels SO WRONG to have a Christmas without Yuletide. I mean, obviously there is still very much a Yuletide, and I will pick my way through its offerings at some point, but this is the first year ever I did not participate, and it's WEIRD. Well, such is 2020.

I have an Old Guard big bang fic that I desperately need to finish by next week (...oh god...), but I did take a break from frantically working on that to write a TOG gift exchange fic instead, because everything is Old Guard for me right now and nothing hurts. Plus, I got to get back on my usual Oscar Wilde bullshit, because if a fandom can in any way canonically veer late Victorian era, I will somehow work gross indecency into it.

Happy holidays, y'all. We've almost made it through this shitshow of a year. <3

So hey I wrote a thing. This one is long. It also actually contains Andy/Quynh content (as well as Joe/Nicky, obvs). And a plot and stuff.

Travellers from an Antique Land (45787 words) by kaydeefalls
Chapters: 4/4
Fandom: The Old Guard (Movie 2020)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Joe | Yusuf Al-Kaysani/Nicky | Nicolo di Genova, Andy | Andromache of Scythia/Quynh | Noriko
Characters: Joe | Yusuf Al-Kaysani, Nicky | Nicolo di Genova, Quynh | Noriko, Nile Freeman, Booker | Sebastien le Livre, Andy | Andromache of Scythia, James Copley
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Action & Romance, Plotty, Canon-Typical Violence, Temporary Character Death, as per canon, Team as Family, Healthy Relationships, Ensemble Cast, POV Multiple, Canon Queer Relationship, Canon Queer Character, Flashbacks, Hurt/Comfort, Non-Graphic Violence, everyone gets to be badass, Andy is the one in the iron maiden, Reunions
Summary:

"Wait, hold up a sec. So if you were around before them -- how old are you?"

The men all go quiet, and Nile wonders if she's just committed some kind of immortal faux pas. "It is irrelevant," Quỳnh finally says. "Old enough to know there is no point looking backwards."

"You're the oldest," Nile murmurs in awe. Older than the Crusades. How much older? A few hundred years more? A thousand?

"No," Nicky says quietly. "Not the oldest."

Canon-divergent AU. Five hundred years ago, they lost Andromache to the sea. Now Quỳnh leads the team, a new immortal just woke up, and some pharmaceutical company is getting a little too interested in their business.

I'm deliberately sitting out Yuletide this year, for the first time since its inception, and that makes me so sad. But I pored through the entire list of fandoms and just...could not get excited about writing any of them. And right now I actually DO have multiple WIPs I'm excited about writing. So...yeah. I'm gonna double down on the things I actively want to write instead of flailing about in the vague hope of inspiration.

It doesn't help that my two most solid safety backup fandoms to offer are missing this year, alas. Well, History Boys is technically there, but the only character options are Dakin and Irwin, and that is not my jam. With no safety fandoms in my pocket, I'm really leery about having nothing to offer that excites me. (I'm always way more concerned about what I offer than what I request. I can easily come up with requests for any number of fandoms I only have a passing interest in, but I don't want to commit to WRITING them.)

Oh well. Not my year. I'll still probably scan the requests once they're up in the hopes that something will strike me enough to write a treat. And in the meantime, I'm just gonna dive right back into my Old Guard fandom happy place.

(I did sign up for Festivids, at least!) This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. Comment wherever you'd like.

HEY I successfully completed my Big Bang fic by the skin of my freaking teeth, and as a reward I got the most gorgeous art for it, yay!

Why yes I am indeed back on my X-Men Fusion AU bullshit, why do you ask.

I am BASKING in the fannish zeitgeist of the Old Guard fandom this summer, it's exactly what I needed in these utterly fucked up times. But one of the most beautiful elements of it is how it seems to be drawing in people from so very many different fandoms right now, including reconnecting old friends from fandoms of yore. Like, my fic got a comment from someone I'd been so close with back in Lotrips whose name I haven't heard in fifteen years, and it just makes me so goddamn happy to know she's still around.

I love everyone in this bar, is what I'm saying. This entry was originally posted on Dreamwidth. Comment wherever you'd like.
