When the organizer of a major cat competition is murdered and the grand prize is stolen, Shell McMillan will have to claw through the clues to catch a killer . . .

The Kitty Club Cat Show has come to Fox Hollow, and everyone from casual cat lovers to competitive breeders has shown up for the contest. Pet shop owner Shell McMillan has two cats entered, and like everyone else she has her eye on the grand prize, a vibrant red leash with a solid gold cat-head figurine attached. As the judging begins, cat owners clash and the fur flies, until a power outage throws the whole arena into darkness. But when the lights come back up, the event’s organizer is found dead and the grand prize is missing.

Shell knows the obvious suspect is the victim’s stepson, who’s up to his neck in gambling debts and would kill to get his hands on his inheritance. But there are plenty of disgruntled competitors to consider too, including some who had an old score to settle with the victim. Every clue is catnip for Shell, especially as she puzzles out whether the thief and the murderer are the same person. Either way, with two crimes to solve and a killer on the loose, she’ll have to tread carefully so that her dreams of Best in Show don’t end with Rest in Peace . . .

Publishing Date: April 7, 2026

Page count: 448 pages

SYNOPSIS:

In this dark and sultry romantasy a mermaid battles hatred—and lust—for the wretched warlock who saved her life.

Mermaid Zephyra of the Syl dreams of freedom. On the run from a dangerous captor and years of abuse, she’s shed her tail, grown legs, and hidden herself on land in the merrow-loathing kingdom of Mortia, left to steal and barter on the dirty streets. But her freedom is short-lived when she’s caught and sentenced to death by the brutal warlock, Arion Stone.

Arion is as beautiful as he is cold and deadly, only interested in punishing the merrow he views as evil. He has grown as strong as any warlock might, but at great personal cost…which can only be remedied by the heart of the God of Death, lost to a fabled kingdom beneath the ocean’s treacherous depths.

So Arion offers Zephyra a deal she can’t refuse; help him find the mystical heart, and he’ll spare her life. With no other options, Zephyra agrees, entangling their souls and forbidden desires in a magical bargain until death do they part. But Zephyra’s past is catching up to her, and the enemy she fled seeks vengeance. If Zephyra and Arion can’t learn to fight together–and trust each other–there are worse things awaiting them than just death.

Of course, in the wicked sea, everyone has secrets, and no one should be trusted.

SYNOPSIS:

A matriarchal empire. A princess with forbidden magic. A mother who would kill to protect her own legacy.

As heir to the Min empire, Tori has learned to wear her collar well — speaking her mind just enough to feel like herself, defying her empress mother just enough to survive the guilt of submission. But she’s hiding a secret that would see her sawn in half: a forbidden elemental power tied to the world’s mythic past. If discovered, her mother would execute her own daughter without hesitation. And Tori knows it.

When discovery becomes inevitable, she flees into Peach Blossom Grove — a mythic realm of ghost-flowers, sentient forests, and immortals who remember a world before empires. In this ancient realm where immortal masters train magic-wielders and sentient weapons choose their owners, magic is neither blessing nor curse but a reflection of who you truly are. Here, Tori finds what the palace never gave her: belonging. But the trials are brutal, designed to break her before they remake her. And as her mother’s ambition threatens war, Tori must choose — suppress the power that could doom her, or embrace it and become the one thing her mother fears most.

Herself.

Whispers of the Elixir begins the Order of the Ember series — a slow-burn, character-driven epic fantasy of legacy, sacrifice, and the strength of a princess destined to rise from the shadows and claim her place in legend.

Here you will find the political intrigue of Andrea Stewart, the immersive worldbuilding of Patrick Rothfuss, and the emotional weight of M.L. Wang.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT:

Tori fought the feeling of being on a leash. She raised a hand halfway to the feathers fastened around her neck, hesitated, then let it fall.

“Is it itching, Princess?” Lady Elnora said, watching her.

“Like all insanity, but no point fiddling with it.”

Her gentlewoman adjusted the feathered ruff anyway, providing no relief whatsoever. It didn’t matter. Collared or not, today she would prove she was not her mother’s lapdog.

She struggled to see above the red filigree rail of the Imperial Observation Pavilion—where the royal family sat, far above the masses—the weight of her ceremonial robes resisting her every effort. Imperial decorum, it seemed, had not been designed with mobility in mind. It was times like these that she regretted her small stature; her mother, no doubt, could see perfectly.

Once she finally shifted forward, however, her three-story vantage point allowed her a perfect view of the float parade winding through the city of Silver Fox Springs in a ribbon of color and sound.

“I still don’t see them,” Tori said, craning her neck forward.

Elnora’s smooth brown finger pointed the way. Blending seamlessly with the sculptures of giant mythical creatures adorning the streets, Tori’s pantomimists balanced on their stilts, waist pouches packed so tight with skades that the little stones stretched the seams. Pantomimists had never been seen before at the Tailu Spring Festival—and would remain hidden, until her plan required it.

AUTHOR GUEST POST:

Please welcome C.P. Silver, the author of today’s featured book to the blog, to discuss what inspires her.

Inspiration and the Order of the Empire

by C.P. Silver

Step with me for a moment into a forest. Sunlight filters through the branches, and dappled warmth touches your face. The air feels pleasantly cool, and when you breathe it in, earthy freshness fills you. You hear the trickle of a nearby stream, and, if you strain your ear, the tinkling bell of birdsong.

Here, you forget your housework, your frustrations, your job; and I forget my desk with its stacks of heavily scribbled paper, and the scented candle I never burn. Then, a gentle rain falls, washing our minds. Our imaginations take flight, transporting us into a world where the trees are not merely fragrant with life, but sentient—aware of themselves…and of us.

This is what inspiration looks like to me. The forest is where my story world, Arizan, which had been gestating for years inside my head, was finally born.

Strolling through the forest on a drizzly day brought me such peace and renewed energy that landscapes and people and situations seemed to emerge on their own. Naturally, the entire world didn’t come into being during one afternoon; it took many. During those times, I think the inspiration came from the sense of being part of something bigger than myself, a tiny piece of our natural world. But the rain itself also inspired me, as it is symbolic of new beginnings, washing away old ideas to let the new emerge. I felt like, whatever else was going on in the world, here I was free to create, and nothing could bother me. I still feel that way whenever I stroll through a forest.

This is also the feeling my protagonist, Princess Tori, has when she discovers the hidden village of Peach Blossom Grove. Here, the brutality of the Min Empire—and Tori’s own risk of being sawn in half for her magic—can’t touch her, as she breathes the village’s pure air and learns its profound lessons.

But my greatest inspiration isn’t the result of the restoration I feel in a forest on a misty day. It comes from knowing that some readers will only access this freshness and sense of promise through the forests they enter through my pages. There are, of course, those who are simply intrigued by the world-building of a place with sentient trees and ghost rabbits and weapons that choose their own masters. But for readers who connect with the sense of belonging and serenity that a place like Peach Blossom Grove transmits, my goal is to help them escape into a fantastical world where they can encounter deep transformation for themselves.

Book Review: Agatha Christie, She Watched by Teresa Peschel

Agatha Christie, She Watched: One Woman's Plot to Watch 201 Christie Adaptations Without Murdering the Director, Screenwriter, Cast, or Her Husband (At the Movies With Teresa)Agatha Christie, She Watched: One Woman’s Plot to Watch 201 Christie Adaptations Without Murdering the Director, Screenwriter, Cast, or Her Husband by Teresa Peschel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Comprehensive guide with fantastic, down-to-Earth reviews and commentary.

Billed as the only comprehensive guide to Agatha Christie movies, Agatha Christie, She Watched, is truly the only one needed. It provides everything you need to know to hunt down and enjoy the over 200 film adaptations of the world’s bestselling author’s works. Full of insightful reviews, the guide also provides quick visuals and graphic indicators of the quality of each film entry as well as how closely the result adheres to the original source materials: Christie’s books, stories, and plays.

Like many mystery readers, I am a fan of Christie’s work, having come across her books as a pre-teen and early in my mystery-reading hobby, especially enjoying the longer series featuring Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple. Yet, I’ve seen very few of the literally hundreds of film adaptations, not that I didn’t want to! I loved how the book is organized, so even someone new to this massive field like myself can weed through the volume and start with those I would probably enjoy the most: first, by the Christie detective in the film, and secondly, in order of the films’ release dates. However, I simply enjoyed reading through the two-page layouts for each film, which not only gave an overview of the film but also which book, story, or play provided its inspiration and how the plots differed. I loved how the author included real-life facts related to the film, such as the addition of the character Jim Stringer to the Miss Marple films starring Margaret Rutherford. The character was played by Stringer Davis, Rutherford’s real-life husband. The author also examines how changes to the script affected how well the movie worked compared to the original source material; some didn’t fare so well.

Each film’s pages list the cast members and photos of six of the more prominent characters. I was surprised to see how many well-known actors appeared in Agatha Christie adaptations, especially before they had attained their celebrity. Other surprises for me included the number of films with all-star casts and the number of times Peter Ustinov and David Suchet portrayed Poirot.

With its amazing number of interesting facts, down-to-Earth commentary, and its comprehensive and very useful index, I highly recommend AGATHA CHRISTIE, SHE WATCHED to Agatha Christie fans wanting to experience the film adaptations of her works. (For those really wanting to experience the full cinematic scope of Christie’s works, the author has also released an international edition of AGATHA CHRISTIE, SHE WATCHED, which highlights foreign (non-UK/US) films and subtitled “How The World’s Best-selling Author Is Seen By Audiences In China, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, Sweden, and Thailand” (and others.)

Chapter 1

Potholes on a road I’d never traveled before grabbed at the wheels like a bad conscience seeking redemption. It led to a ranch east of Burns surrounded by withered hayfields scratched out of a dead sea of sage scrub. Tumbleweeds hung on rusty strands of sagging barbed wire. The wind-scoured house and barn looked ready to give up the ghost. If the call that brought me out proved true, the owners already had.

A brand new 1980 Cadillac Sedan de Ville was parked out front. The color made me think of the old saw about red skies in the morning. The driver’s door opened and released a cloud of cigar smoke followed by a big man wearing a pearl snap-button shirt and stockman boots. He set a summertime Stetson atop his crew cut and eyed the seven-point gold star on the door of my rig.

“I take it you’re the new sheriff,” he said. “I heard Harney County had a special election to fill the boots of the old one who got hisself killed.”

“Nick Drake,” I said. “And you are?”

“Red Caldera.” He chuckled. “Yup, I know, heckuva moniker. My folks’ idea at being clever. Pleased to make your acquaintance, though the situation inside is none too pleasing. Couple been dead a week, be my guess.”

When I didn’t make a move toward the house, he clicked his cheek. “I woulda thought you’d charge right in, but maybe you don’t know you’re s’posed to on account you’re new to sheriffing.”

“If they’re dead like you say, what I need to know first is why you went inside uninvited.”

The straw cowboy hat reared back as he aimed his double chin at me. “Now, hold it right there. I didn’t do nothing wrong. I’m the one called it in and I’m the one been cooling my heels on a hotter than a firecracker morning waiting for you to show up.”

Book Review: Who’s Out There by Westley Smith

Who's Out ThereWho’s Out There by Westley Smith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” were set at Camp Crystal Lake.

Who’s Out There by Westley Smith is a riveting, suspense-filled thriller with a brooding atmosphere, incipient terror, and hints of supernatural interference that had me in its grip from the start. The result is what you’d get if Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap were relocated to Camp Crystal Lake, the setting of the film Friday the 13th. I enjoyed every minute of it.

The story unfolds from multiple points of view as a massive snowstorm bears down on the region, and the ten rangers on duty try to button down the park before the roads in and out become impassable. However, a man with a grudge against the state park has gone missing there, and his father arrives looking for help locating him across the acreage that used to belong to their family. As the storm worsens, the rangers are stranded, and one by one they are being picked off in the same way the camp counselors at the shuttered state-run lakeside summer camp on the park property were more than two decades earlier.

The main characters are the recently appointed supervising ranger, Colt Mitcham, and his subordinate and secret girlfriend, Ranger Josephine “Joey” Walsh. Colt takes his responsibilities to his people very seriously and takes many risks to ensure they are safe. However, each murder becomes a personal failure, even as the evidence quickly points to one of the rangers being the killer.

The book maintains an exciting, suspenseful pace, and I found it hard to take a break (or even want to!) I felt like I couldn’t trust any of the characters to be who they appeared to be, and even though clues were sprinkled throughout the action, I was never sure they meant what they seemed to imply. Luckily, I was able to read this book from start to finish in one day because I don’t think I could have slept without knowing how it all worked out and who would be left standing once the storm blew over.

I recommend WHO’S OUT THERE to readers of thrillers, suspense, and mild horror.

Read an excerpt:

~Jakob~

Wednesday. 2:30 p.m.

Jakob Rizk didn’t notice the concrete sidewalks of downtown Indy. He didn’t see the people. His body was on automatic pilot, his mind back in the office of the Marion County prosecutor. They’d worked a few cases together back when he, Jakob, was a senior attorney in the criminal department.

Which was last week.

Then Jakob had stepped into the role of interim attorney general after Harrison Stanley died unexpectedly. The death and appointment were as much a surprise to him as the rest of the state. From assistant county prosecutor to the state’s top attorney in three years. The change left no time to plan, to think, to grieve. Noon Monday, the governor publicly announced the interim appointment. An hour later, Jakob sat behind the shiny desk in the office with Harry’s name on the door, scouring through emails and hand-annotated notes to pick up where Harry had left off on Friday.

A shoulder bounced off his arm.

“My apologies,” he said automatically. Lifting his head, he saw a swarm of young teens in identical blue T-shirts. He bobbed and weaved, feeling like he was swimming upstream.

The metaphor applied to more than the sidewalk. He reached an intersection, pressed the “walk” button, and waited.

Three hours ago, his mobile rang. Glad to see a familiar name come up, Jakob had answered without hesitating. But he wasn’t calling as a friend, he was calling as a county prosecutor. He had a problem and needed Jakob’s advice. Could he come over to talk?

So, Jakob went.

“Walk. Walk. Walk.”

Jakob obeyed, staying between the white lines out of habit rather than intent.

The problem was a dead woman named Lucy Torok. Her body had been found in her truck, parked under the interstate bridge where she worked as a construction inspector. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had a suspect but evidence was so thin the odds of securing a conviction were single digits. On the surface, the case was murder. But beneath the waters lurked a political bear trap. Should he hold out for more evidence or move forward to appease the well-connected family? And that was where his friend needed advice.

What would Harry do if he’d gotten the call …

“I like your shoes.” A rough, worn voice pulled Jakob from his thoughts. He glanced at the Italian leather on his feet. “Thank you,” he said to the man sitting against the nearest building. Likely homeless, the clothes were oversized for the man and too heavy for the hot June afternoon. But his shoes, those were pristine. A point of pride. “I like yours. It’s a challenge to keep white clean.”

“It is, but worth it,” the man said. “Yessiree. I like those shoes. But truth, I liked your other ones better.”

Jakob’s mind raced to decode the comment. Had the man seen him before and noticed his shoes? He had a collection that would be embarrassing if anyone but his wife saw it. More likely the man suffered from a mental illness. Addiction. Delusional disorder. What else could make a man imagine shoes? Didn’t matter. He needed to get back to Harry’s office.

“I like those, too,” he said, playing along. “But you have to mix it up sometimes. Have a good one.” Jakob hurried along to discourage conversation. One more street and he entered the building through the revolving door. Crisp cool air greeted his face and hands. He was tempted to pull off his suit jacket, but knowing he’d been sweating, he left it in place.

“You’re back again,” Anthony Raymond called out. The security guard was one of Jakob’s favorite people, always having a smile to share. “What a surprise.”

“That’s me,” Jakob said dryly as he put his phone in the bowl, backpack on the table. “Just full of surprises.” He walked through the metal detector, then waited on the other side for Anthony to clear his bag.

“I guess your plans fell through.”

“You mean my meeting? No, I had it. It didn’t take long.”

Anthony’s face betrayed his bewilderment.

“Meetings do occasionally end early.” Jakob chuckled. “It’s rare, but every once in a while, we get a few minutes back in our day.”

“No, sir. I mean, yes, sir, I’m sure they do.” Anthony pushed the backpack toward Jakob but didn’t let go. “I just have to ask. Why did you change clothes again?”

Did Anthony get him mixed up with someone else? He felt a little hurt. He saw Anthony as a—well, they weren’t friends, but acquaintances. Apparently Anthony saw him as just another suit.

“The governor expects us to dress when we’re in the building. We need to paint the right picture, you know. Have a good afternoon, Anthony.”

“You, too,” Anthony called after him.

Jakob headed to the elevator, grateful the doors opened nearly instantly. They closed and he was alone with his ego, dented after the reminder he wasn’t special at all. He shared the short ride up with his reflection. A familiar stranger. Neither different nor the same, who was he now?

The doors opened and he put on a façade that included his confident smile.

He walked through the glass entryway that had been the gateway to his work for the last three years. The receptionist, Ivy O’Neil, wasn’t at her post. A rarity. He headed left, to the office of the attorney general. He nodded to a staffer, who blinked without nodding back.

Jakob was beginning to think there really was something different about this upcoming generation of attorneys and it wasn’t their overwhelming social skills.

The desk and area outside the AG’s office was the territory of Executive Assistant Lisa Hastings. The most senior person in the office, who was also conspicuously missing.

“Where is everyone?” Jakob had a moment of panic. Had he forgotten a meeting? An event?

Voices came from behind the door to Harry’s office. A dull thump. Something heavy hit the floor. What the hell was going on in there?

Jakob sucked air in, then narrowed his eyes at the closed door. Someone was looting Harry’s office. Confidential information was everywhere, valuable to both sides of the aisle, to corporations, to plaintiffs and defendants.

Not on his watch!

Jakob shouldered the door open, leaping inside. “Stop what you’re doing!”

The desk fell from two pairs of hands, the muted slap of wood against carpet. Four faces turned to him. Three wore slack-jawed expressions. The fourth grinned like a pirate looting treasure.

“Seth?” Jakob stepped inside, blinking to see if his twin brother was really there or a figment of his overloaded mind. “You’re in Miami.”

“Jakob.” Seth looked around the large corner office. “I almost like the digs.”

“Jakob?” Lisa Hastings took a step away from the man who looked strikingly like her boss. Her head was on a swivel.

Jakob. Seth. Jakob. Seth.

Amusement washed over Jakob and brought a smile to his face for the first time in days. “I apologize, Lisa. I should have warned you that if I showed up shouting ridiculous orders, you were to call an ambulance and have them bring restraints.”

Seth chortled.

“You’re twins,” she said, now shaking her head. “Identical.”

“I’m better-looking,” Seth said as Jakob said, “I’m smarter.”

Jakob scowled as he covered the distance to his brother in three strides. “You show up, unannounced, and you rearrange my office?”

Seth’s smile grew until it reached both ears. “You nailed it in one, Counselor.”

“God, I missed your stupid head.” Jakob grabbed his twin, pulling him in for a hard hug.

“Well, don’t think I missed your ugly face,” Seth said but hugged him just as hard.

Ivy picked up the law book from the floor. “We can put it all back,” she said, looking to the law clerk who always seemed to be lending the young woman a helping hand.

“Absolutely. Just take a minute.” Jakob lifted one end of the desk.

“Leave it where it is,” Seth ordered.

Jakob gave his brother the look that had gotten him accused of witness intimidation. “This is my office. I say where Harry’s desk goes. Put it—”

“—where it is.” Seth dragged him until they were face-to-face. “Haven’t you learned anything about security? Your desk does not go in front of the door. It gives a shooter a direct line of sight.”

“Ohmygod.” Ivy dropped the book in her hands. The dull thud was louder on this side of the door.

Jakob held out his palms as if to calm a frightened child. “It’s okay. Leave it for now. We’ll decide where to put Harry’s desk later.”

“We all have work to do.” Lisa herded Ivy and the clerk out of the office. “And you two … behave.” She closed the door behind her.

Seth pulled his arm back and dropped onto the long leather couch now positioned to face the door. “I bet nothing gets by her.”

“That’s it?” Jakob threw up his hands. “Are you just going to pretend like you didn’t appear out of thin air? What are you doing here, Seth?”

“I came to see you. It’s not every day I become related to the attorney general of a whole state. These are moments to be savored.” He stretched, inhaling deeply. “Feels good. I like it. How about you?”

Jakob gave his brother his perfected “don’t mess with me” stare.

Seth gave up the pretense with an eyeroll. “Put away your weapon. I give up, Counselor. I’m here for Harry’s funeral.”

“Thank you, Seth, but we talked about this,” he said, walking to his desk. “I told you not to come.”

Seth snorted. “Since when has that worked? I’m here and you’re stuck with me until I book a return flight. Now, how’s it feel to be the attorney general for Indiana?”

“I’m the interim AG, and it’s fine.” Jakob slid his hip onto the corner of his desk. “When did you get in? How was your flight?” The conversation drifted into the usual commentary on air travel and Indianapolis traffic. When it came to accommodations, there was no discussion. “You’re staying with us. We have plenty of room. Let me call Courtney and tell her you’re here.”

“I have a better idea.” Seth’s grin became mischievous. “We’ll trade clothes.”

“It’s not going to work. We’ve been trying to pull off a switch since Courtney and I dated at Indiana University. We’re 0 for, like, twenty. She won’t fall for it. She never does.”

“She doesn’t know I’m here,” Seth argued. “I’m darker, but as long as your olive ass isn’t next to me, she won’t notice the difference.”

Jakob shook his head. “She’s smarter than both of us.”

“I’m not denying it, but she can’t always win.” He studied his twin, head to toe. “Why did you cut your hair so short? I hate our hair short. We look like a lawyer.”

“I am a lawyer. Why is yours so long? We look derelict. You working vice or something?”

“Something.” Seth ran a hand through the thick, wavy black hair their father passed on to them. Their build and features came from their father’s Mediterranean ancestry, with one notable exception—their eyes. They both had their mother’s Scottish misty gray eyes.

Seth hadn’t answered the question, but Jakob let it go. For now. “I’ll bet you a dollar Courtney knows it’s you in under a minute.”

“A minute? Done.”

His cell phone rang. His friend the prosecutor was calling back. Good news didn’t happen that quickly in Jakob’s experience. He looked to his brother.

Seth popped to his feet. “Come find me when you’re done. I’ll be wherever Lisa says you’re buying me lunch.”

Review:

5 stars!

Great characters and an intriguing murder mystery land this book on my list of top books of the year!

Murder On Site is the first book in veteran author TG Wolff’s new Rizk Brothers Legal Mysteries series, and I couldn’t imagine a better start. With a host of great characters working together to solve a baffling murder, I happily read this book in one sitting, riveted by its pages.

The main characters, the titular Rizk brothers, Jakob and Seth, are twins and, though physically alike, personality-wise are as different as night and day. However, both are called to lives of service, Jakob as a prosecuting attorney and currently the interim attorney general for the state of Indiana, and Seth, a Miami police detective, back home in Indianapolis for the funeral of Harrison Stanley, the previous AG and a father figure to the brothers, especially Jakob. Harry had died while he and Jakob were playing golf, and Jakob was really struggling with his sudden passing.

Jakob assumes the position of interim AG at the governor’s behest until a new one can be elected, and he faces intra-departmental competition and sabotage from his former supervisor, Jessica Hartley, and a state senator who’s in her corner. As Jakob settles in, a former colleague calls for advice on a difficult case. The family of a woman whose body was found on the construction jobsite where she worked as an inspector is pressuring his office to charge the only suspect in her murder immediately. The case against the man is extremely weak, with little evidence truly tying him to the murder. Unfortunately, the family is politically connected to the same state senator already causing Jakob grief. Jakob needs help to find the killer and find them fast, so he turns to Seth, who has his own struggles, personal and professional, he needs to face back in Miami. Together, they function like a machine as they conduct a solid investigation. With few clues to start with, it is up to Seth to open new, productive lines of inquiry and, perhaps, prompt some forgotten observations or answers to previously unasked questions from potential witnesses.

The plot is well-paced, with details of the case, the twins’ backstories, and other exposition seamlessly woven into the narrative. While the subject, a tragic murder, is serious, the author works quite a bit of humor into the story through dialogue. I laughed out loud several times at snarky comments, clever comebacks, and even at attorney Andrew Rosenfelt’s name. Having worked in a city engineering department for almost two decades, I found the construction elements relatable and familiar, and the setting perfect for intrigue.

I recommend MURDER ON SITE to readers of mysteries, especially those who enjoy a legal or construction setting.

Book Review: She Thought I Knew (West Coast Thriller, #1) by C.S. Cowan

She Thought I Knew: A West Coast ThrillerShe Thought I Knew: A West Coast Thriller by C.S. Cowan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

With its deceptively intricate plot and engaging main character, SHE THOUGHT I KNEW had me hooked from start to finish.

She Thought I Knew is the first book in author C.S. Cowan’s new West Coast Thriller series featuring Simon Fraser University criminology professor Dr. Maeve Rosetti. Maeve returns home to her roots to support her estranged sister when Kathleen’s 15-year-old daughter, Jessica, goes missing after sneaking out of the house to attend a local dance. With time running out for a happy resolution, Maeve must confront the demons of her past to help bring her only niece home.

The plot for the book is robust and full of intriguing secondary storylines: the death of Maeve’s husband, the old hurt standing between the two sisters, and their father’s unsolved disappearance when they were young, to name a few. But even more tangles are in store for readers as the story progresses. The author cleverly eeks out clues but reserves just enough detail to obfuscate the truth behind Jessica’s disappearance. I was certain I had this one figured out, only to find out I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The story focuses on the impact on the missing girl’s family and the subsequent unfolding of family secrets. Maeve and Kathleen’s estrangement runs deep, and there is a walking-on-eggshells tension, which extends to include Kathleen’s husband, Doug, whenever the two are together. The appearance of Doug’s best friend, reporter Hank Jensen, was like a breath of fresh air in the highly emotional atmosphere. He and Maeve worked well together as they talked to possible witnesses or checked out leads to Jessica’s whereabouts. One aspect I liked about the plot’s very foundation is that Maeve lets the police do their job. She is the first to draw a line between her profession and that of the trained investigators, and everyone adheres to and respects that distinction. What she does uncover is that there are consequences to our actions, some immediate and some that manifest themselves long afterward.

The author’s writing style was comfortable and easy to read, and I was absorbed into these characters’ lives from the start. The story is smartly paced, with twists occurring as new clues to Jessica’s disappearance start to taper off. The setting on the Sechelt Peninsula’s Sunshine Coast was unique, providing a lot of possibilities to figure in the search: populous Vancouver and rural west Canada, tourist hotspots, lonely stretches of beach, and mountainous areas, with drifters, “Coasters,” and the indigenous people all present and available for plot twists.

With its deceptively intricate plot and engaging main character, I recommend SHE THOUGHT I KNEW to mystery and thriller readers and those who enjoy Canadian settings.

Betsy Ellor’s

WOW!

Women on Writing

Book Blog Tour of

HERA: Kingdom of Lies

Women’s / Historical / Fiction

Publisher: Words Unbound Press

Publication Date: January 20, 2026

Page count: 282 pages

SYNOPSIS:

Before the gods became.

Before humankind was imagined.

Before Olympus was more than mist on a desolate mountain — Hera reigned.

When the war hero, Zeus, takes power and moves Hera’s statues aside to make room for his own, the queen of heaven must find her place in a new order. At first, drawn in by Zeus’ charm, she quickly realizes she wants no part of life with this petty, egocentric dictator. When she refuses to marry him, what began as seduction becomes a snare. Trapped into marriage, Hera learns that power can still be forged through cunning, seduction, and unexpected alliances. But after she gives birth to the God of War, her influence begins to crumble — and his lust threatens to tear the kingdom apart.

Who is the Goddess of Marriage, if she’s bound to a husband who defiles every vow?

Who is the Goddess of Motherhood, if she’s raising a child the world misunderstands?

What kind of goddess is she willing to become to protect her people and her child?

Rich with betrayal, desire, and divine intrigue, this origin story of Greek mythology told from the point of view of its chief villain weaves gods, nymphs, dragons, sex, lies, and strategy into a fierce new legend. Hera: Kingdom of Lies combines the social and political maneuvers of Scandal with the mythic, villain redemption of Circe.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

A riveting reimagining of Greek mythology’s portrayal of Hera, the queen of all the cosmos.

HERA: Kingdom of Lies by Betsy Ellor is a vivid and riveting reimagining of the Greek goddess Hera’s story, from before her marriage to Zeus to after. The goddess of marriage, motherhood, and family, Hera, is most often portrayed as jealous, quarrelsome, and vindictive, yet she is inevitably standing up to Zeus in support of the people and her dominions’ responsibilities. Ellor’s story brings together various tales involving the goddess and her relationship with Zeus and presents them in a lively, dramatic, and compelling fashion that had me reading this book from start to finish in one day.

Beginning with her life on the island of Samos, Hera is the queen of a growing population of refugees fleeing from Zeus’s war against Kronos (her father) and the Titans. Hera is a gifted and capable leader who is not afraid to get her hands dirty and is revered by the people. She is a confident young woman (in immortal years) who pitches in to serve however she can. The author deftly works in Hera’s unique and unbelievable origin story and her rescue from captivity by Zeus, establishing that she has long harbored tender affections for her liberator. When the war is won, she is delighted by his eager courtship, but his ego and man-baby antics quickly disillusion her. Her drastically changed feelings for him resulted in violent and tragic consequences as well as pregnancy. Readers sensitive to this type of story element should take note. The attack is brutal and gut-wrenching to read, but Hera doesn’t let it destroy her; rather, she uses it to strengthen her resolve to do what she can to temper Zeus’s frequently thoughtless actions and poor decisions that affect their people.

While traditional versions of the same stories often feel dry and dusty, Ellor’s fresh narrative really makes Hera’s tales, warts and all, come to life. You could feel her emotions, understand her actions, and see how she strives to embody the best of marriage, motherhood, and family. The book closes with the promise of more story yet to come, and I can hardly wait.

I recommend HERA; KINGDOM OF LIES to readers of modern takes on ancient mythologies.
