Vatican Apostolic E Library

The Digital Vatican Library is the online portal that provides access to the Vatican Library’s digitized collections. It was launched as part of a major digitization initiative that began in 2010, aiming to preserve and share the Library’s treasures with scholars and the public worldwide. Here are some key features:

  • Collections Available: Digitized manuscripts, incunabula (books printed before 1500), archival materials, graphic works, coins, medals, and printed books.
  • Technology Used: The platform is built on the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), which allows for high-resolution viewing, deep zooming, and integration with other digital libraries.
  • Scope: The project aims to digitize around 80,000 manuscripts, with tens of thousands already available online. This includes rare items like the Codex Vaticanus, one of the oldest complete manuscripts of the Bible in Greek.
  • Access: Free and open to all, the digital library supports scholarly research and public exploration of historical texts and artifacts.

Historica Canada

The Historica Canada database is a rich, bilingual digital resource dedicated to enhancing awareness and appreciation of Canadian history, identity, and citizenship. It is operated by Historica Canada, a charitable organization known for its educational programs and public history initiatives.

Key Features of the Historica Canada Database:

  • The Canadian Encyclopedia: This is the centerpiece of the database, offering over 26,000 fact-checked articles on Canadian history, culture, politics, geography, and notable figures. It is the largest collection of authored and continuously updated Canadian content available online.

  • Heritage Minutes: A popular series of short dramatized videos (about 60 seconds each) that depict pivotal moments and people in Canadian history. These are widely used in classrooms and media to bring history to life.

  • Multilingual Access: While the core content is available in English and French, some resources are also accessible in 35 other languages, making it inclusive and accessible to diverse communities across Canada.

  • Educational Tools: Historica Canada provides free teaching guides, timelines, quizzes, and interactive resources designed for students and educators. These tools support curriculum goals and encourage critical thinking about Canada’s past and present.

  • Special Projects: The organization also hosts initiatives like Canada During COVID-19, a living archive of the pandemic experience, and Indigenous Arts & Stories, a creative competition for Indigenous youth.
