About Jemma
Photography has been my passion since I was a young girl. I loved looking at the world in ‘frames’. When I was thirteen my parents gave me my first SLR camera – before that it was disposable cameras! – and I was then hooked for life. I practised for hours and hours until using manual mode became second nature, and no matter what the weather, I was out with my camera, sometimes my fingers were so cold in the winter that it was painful to change the lens!
To know me is to know my family!
I come from a family of food lovers and cosy home makers. One grandfather was an avid cook (the dishes didn’t always look very appetising, but they tasted delicious), and staying with my grandparents was always a culinary adventure! My mother was a wonderful homemaker, she had a fantastic eye for detail (and a bargain!), meaning our home was full of interesting objects that, when put together with the furniture she sourced, made a beautiful and very comfortable home.
So, I was born into a world of food and interiors, and the influence of both is still with me, which is why it seemed so obvious to channel my passion for photography into these two areas of my life.
My life today
I have now been a professional photographer for over twenty years, working alongside some of the most successful people in the food and interiors industry, in branding, publishing, PR and editorial. My work has featured in the top food and interiors magazines, including Homes & Antiques, Country Living, Real Homes, Jamie Oliver, House Beautiful, 91 Magazine, House and Home, Olive Magazine, HomeStyle, Weight Watchers, and The Guardian Cook. Some of the brand clients include Bailey’s, 3M, Hillary’s Blinds, Beards & Daisies, The Sensory Home, and many interior designers and architects too.
To date I have photographed seven cookbooks for publishers Penguin Books, Kyle Books, Quintet Publishing and Hodder & Stoughton. The authors include Gok Wan, Tilly Ramsay, Sophie Wright, as well as others.
Photography Workshops and On-line Courses
In recent years I have hosted photography workshops, both online and in person, teaching people how to use their camera or phone and explore their creative image making. As well as helping individuals with a passion for photography, I am on a mission to help small business owners develop their photographic style, to be able to improve their photography to take their own pictures for their day to day business needs.
Style and Attention to Detail
Capturing images in a relaxed and natural style, I enjoy creating the narrative behind my photographs, whether that be a table of food, documenting a day out on a fishing boat, or a beautiful home. I love working to bring the client’s brief alive, listening to what is desired and producing an image that inspires and pleases. After many years’ experience, and an obsessive attention to detail, I am able to bring a deep understanding of how best to capture and style the subject in order to create a connection with the viewer. Ultimately, my mantra is to create beautiful, emotive images, that bring joy and satisfaction.
