A NOTE ON APPROACH
Philosophy
Most people don’t really need better photographs.
What they need is someone who can actually see them.
Not the version they think they’re supposed to be, but who they really are underneath all of that.
After almost twenty years of doing this work, that’s the thing I’ve learned more than anything else.
The best pictures don’t come from trying harder, especially when it comes to personal brand photography.
They don’t come from performing for the camera either.
The best moments happen when the person stops trying.
A lot of people show up thinking I’m going to direct them the whole time.
Or that somehow I’m supposed to give them confidence.
But that’s not really my job.
What most people actually need is permission to just be themselves.
That really is the secret sauce. Without any pressure or expectations.
And when that finally happens….when someone relaxes and their guard drops, something miraculous happens.
The camera stops being about how they look.
And the photographs start becoming something else.
They become a small record of who that person really was in that moment.
Over time, the conversations around the work began to change
Becoming
For a long time, my work centred around helping people see themselves differently through the camera. As a London portrait photographer specialising in personal brand and executive portraits for entrepreneurs and founders, there came a point when I began asking deeper questions about my own life.
From the outside looking in, things looked successful. But inside, I wasn’t that sure about my direction and purpose. It was that period of my life which led me back into some serious soul searching and a lot of personal development work.
There’s no doubt that Becoming grew from that experience, and from a simple intention: to support the people who feel lost, stuck or ready for change, because no one should have to navigate that alone. Nobody.
Over the course of a few years, I began to notice that the camera wasn’t really the point.
And it was that profound experience which led me back into plenty of self reflection. Actually, the truth is that The Becoming Reset grew from that chapter.
If this resonates, you can explore Becoming here.
I’ve also written an article on identity, perception and personal brand: How You’re Seen (And Why It Shapes Everything) which you may find helpful.
“A rare combination of kindness, professionalism and instinct.”
“He made everyone feel completely at ease.”
“Working with Jay felt like working with a good friend.”
“He captured moments we simply couldn’t have noticed ourselves.”
