Teaching

I enjoy teaching! To date, I have taught and instructed on over nine different university-level courses. Currently, I am:

  • Co-lead: “Biodiversity from Species to Landscape Scale – Concepts and Methods in Spatial Ecology and Remote Sensing” (EEE334, formerly UWW250) at the University of Zurich, which I co-designed with Gabriela Schaepman-Strub. We share the course administration, planning, lectures, practicals and computer labs.
  • Instructor: “Earth System Modelling” (ESS416) at the University of Zurich, where I instruct on programming and facilitate the computer labs.

Topics taught in the past included population and community ecology, conservation science, science outreach (University of Edinburgh), as well as quantitative and spatial skills (Aarhus University).

“[My favourite things] were the examples today […] they helped me think outside the box […]”
“the ‘draw your own movement’ [exercise] really helped [me] realise how difficult it is to decide on your [study’s] scale”
“I learned how cool works you can do with tracking animals. I decided to study further about this subject after the course”

Certified higher-education teaching

In 2023, I completed the “Teaching Skills” course (210 h, 7 ECTS) at the University of Zurich’s Center for Continued Education. The course was tremendous fun and allowed me to gain solid foundations in learning and teaching theory, learn new skills, obtain peer-feedback and critically reflect on my teaching.
