Jadavpur University is a State University founded on 24 December 1955 under the Jadavpur University Act (West Bengal Act XXXIII of 1955). Originating in the anti-colonial National Council of Education, Bengal (1906) to “achieve self-reliance through the empowerment of youth by imparting the best of global knowledge, technical education, and awareness of social, cultural, political, economic realities of the state, the nation and the world” the university has consistently set new frontiers in science, technology, humanities and social science innovation and outreach; it has provided research and policy support for state and national governments and international bodies, and conventional and non-conventional technological development for society at large, including both established industries and disadvantaged groups, through innovation and adaptation.

Dear Members of the Jadavpur University Family,
It is with deep humility and immense pride that I assume office as the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University—an institution that has long stood as a symbol of excellence, intellectual freedom, and social responsibility. To be entrusted with leading such a historic and vibrant university is both an honour and a profound responsibility.
Jadavpur University has always been more than just a centre of higher learning—it is a living idea, a dynamic space where knowledge meets creativity, where tradition meets innovation, and where thought meets action. The strength of this university lies in its people—our brilliant students, dedicated faculty, diligent staff, visionary alumni,...

It has been a long-standing policy at Jadavpur University that no student should discontinue her/his studies at the university due to lack of funds. Not only are free studentships readily available, but the university also allocates Rupees Five Lakhs every year to pay to students by way of financial assistance for paying their living and other expenses (such as, for example, buying study material). This is in addition to scholarships and other financial assistance plans that are offered by Central or State governments; there are also scholarships administered by alumni associations and various other kinds of financial assistance available for JU students.
Jadavpur University has a separate Placement Office, under the administrative control of the Officer of Placement and Training, which helps students identify job opportunities; it runs placement and entrepreneurship skill-development workshops, where students are taught soft skills, and acts as a facilitator for an interlocutor between students and prospective employers. Over 100 national and transnational companies/organisations come to the university to interview potential recruits every year.
All departments, interdisciplinary schools, centres and special programmes are engaged in research. Recognition and praise have come from assessment and ranking bodies, both national and international, and Jadavpur University has received substantial grants from funding agencies, including UGC-SAP, DST-PURSE, TEQIP, SYLFF, Erasmus+, the European Union, RUSA, among others. As many as thirty teachers of the university find places in the list of the top 2% of the world’s scientists, prepared by Stanford University (2020), the highest among Indian universities. Thrust areas for research are decided upon at the university, faculty, department and school levels, apart from special research programmes cutting across disciplines and departments.
Jadavpur University has consistently pursued innovation, not for its own sake but for the greater good of society. This quest has received recognition and accolades from domestic and international agencies and bodies, academic and otherwise. It is engaged in the development and validation of different types of indigenous knowledge and has long been pursuing R&D and unique inventions in multiple areas of strategic importance with potential for local, national, and global knowledge enhancement and social change. The university nurtures innovation and creativity across disciplinary boundaries by creating flexible and adaptive spaces where new experiments in thought, new technologies, and new knowledge practices can be generated.
JU’s admission policy is predicated on the four pillars of equity, fairness, flexibility and transparency. There must be equity of access so that every student who seeks admission to the university is treated as an equal. The processes for selecting students must be scrupulously fair, and not discriminate against any individual or group. Individual units (schools/departments) must have the flexibility to choose their mode of selecting students for admission. And the entire selection process must be at all times wholly transparent and open to scrutiny by anyone.
