EndNote: Importing & Exporting References

This guide will help you learn to use EndNote software for creating your own library of references and full text. EndNote will also allow you to insert references in the proper format into a paper or grant proposal.

Importing/Exporting References

If you want to import references into an EndNote library from Google Scholar or My NCBI, follow the steps below:

Google Scholar (Importing Individual References)

If you are importing individual references from Google Scholar:

  • Go to Google Scholar.
  • Click on Settings near the top of the page.
  • Under Bibliography Manager, select Show links to import citations into
  • From the pull-down menu, select EndNote.
  • Click Save.
  • This will tag each Scholar reference with an Import into EndNote link.

 

Google Scholar (Importing an Entire Page of References)

If you are logging into a Google account to export an entire page of references:

  • Save the Google Scholar file.
  • Change the file suffix from .enw to .txt.
  • With the EndNote library open, go to File -> Import.
  • Select the .txt file.
  • Make sure Import Options is set to EndNote Import.
  • Click Import.

If that does not work, try using the RIS filter as the Import Option and follow the same process as above.

 

My NCBI

  • Go to PubMed.
  • Click My NCBI in the upper right corner of the page.
  • Log into My NCBI.
  • Click on Manage My Bibliography at the bottom of the My Bibliography box.
  • Select All or just the desired reference(s) by clicking in the box(es) next to the reference(s).
  • Click on Send to -> Citation Manager at the top right of the screen.
  • Make sure you select the appropriate Number to Send in the drop box. This will work for up to 200 citations.

Plain Text to EndNote File

How to pull plain text citations (from a PDF or Word document) into an EndNote library.

  1. Copy references from a PDF or Word document - each citation has to end with a hard return
  2. Go to Citation Finder
  3. Paste the list of citations into the website
  4. Choose RIS citation format
  5. Click Search

The results will show proposed matches for your citations, and what it thinks is correct is in yellow. Make sure the correct ones are selected and download all selected citations. Next, open the file to import into EndNote.

Once the citations are in EndNote, it is a good idea to “find reference updates,” which will add additional information to the citation records if available.
