Programs

We Study Information

We offer five degree programs that prepare students to work and thrive in the information fields

Bachelor of Information (BI)

The Bachelor of Information is a two-year professional program open to students who have completed two years of undergraduate study in any field. Students acquire both the practical techniques and conceptual tools necessary to understand and effect change in a data-intensive society.

Master of Information (MI)

The Master of Information educates students in established and emerging information fields including Library and Information Science, Archives and Records Management, Information Systems Design, User Experience Design, Human-Centred Data Science and Culture & Technology.

Master of Museum Studies (MMSt)

The Master of Museum Studies is the only English-language master’s program of its kind in Canada.

Combined Degree Program 
(MI and MMSt)

The Combined Degree Program offers students the option of earning both Master of Information and Master of Museum Studies degrees over an accelerated three-year period.

PhD in Information

Doctoral students carry out advanced scholarly research exploring the theoretical basis of information studies. Graduates work in academia, industry and government.

Safeguarding justice in the age of AI

An AI Safety Solution Network designed to safeguard courts from synthetic AI content has launched and will be co-directed by Professor Ebrahim Bagheri. The goal of the network, which will receive funding and operate under the Canadian AI Safety Institute Research Program at CIFAR, is to address the rising prevalence of synthetic AI-generated content in the justice system.

Faculty of Information professors and students had a strong presence at the 2026 ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction.

Researchers decode 15th-century letter

A medieval missive crossed centuries and continents before University of Toronto researchers, including Faculty of Information alumni, made a royal discovery: it was a decree from France’s notorious “Spider King.”

Shaping AI policies in Canada

Taj-Rae Oliver (Class of 2023) is an MI grad in Human-Centred Data Science. She now works in one of today’s most exciting, constantly changing, and fast-paced fields as an analyst on an AI Policy team at Public Services and Procurement Canada.
