Codes and standards are the backbone of building and energy safety in the U.S., giving local governments, installers, and other professionals a framework for installing energy systems in a way that mitigates risks and maximizes efficiency. The process of developing codes and standards for clean energy technologies is ongoing, and IREC is involved in both the development and revision of codes and standards, and helping people understand their application.

Sustainable Energy Action Committee (SEAC)

The Sustainable Energy Action Committee (SEAC) brings together a diverse group of stakeholders such as authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), local building and fire departments, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, utilities, testing labs, and other clean energy subject matter experts. SEAC is a national forum for collaboration and problem solving related to codes and standards affecting the installation and use of sustainable energy systems using solar photovoltaics (PV), energy storage, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, and more.

Clean Energy Educational Resources for AHJs

IREC develops and deploys education and training resources for professionals in the building code, inspection, and firefighting sectors. These resources cover a wide range of clean energy technologies, including: solar, energy storage, EV infrastructure, and weatherization. Tens of thousands of code officials and fire fighters have participated in IREC’s online and live training. Supporters of these training projects include the U.S. Department of Energy and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.
