About us

The IPA is an independent, non-profit public policy research organisation, dedicated to preserving and strengthening the foundations of economic and political freedom.

Championing freedom since 1943

The Institute of Public Affairs was founded in 1943 as a non-profit educational research organisation. Our mission, through our research, is:

  • To further the individual, social, political, and economic freedoms of the Australian people.
  • To maintain and enhance the Australian way of life for the next generation.

Since 1943, the IPA has been at the forefront of the political and policy debate, defining the contemporary political landscape.

We neither seek nor receive funding from Government. Our work is supported by more than 10,000 Members and donors.

The IPA supports the free market of ideas, the free flow of capital, a limited and efficient government, evidence-based public policy, the rule of law, and representative democracy. Throughout human history, these ideas have proven themselves to be the most dynamic, liberating and exciting. Our researchers apply these ideas to the public policy questions which matter today.

With so many challenges facing Australia, and so many possible topics of research to choose from, the IPA has established FIVE PILLARS to focus research and communication efforts on the activities where we can make the most impact:

Freedom

For an Australia in which we can speak freely and make our own decisions.

Security

Furthering measures to secure our borders, our property rights, and the essentials of a free and prosperous society.

Prosperity

Demonstrating how a free society unleashes opportunity and shared prosperity.

Nationhood

Promoting core values and shared stories bringing Australians together.
