The day I saw you!

I trudged along the road,

Seeming as it may,

To my tired eyes,

The same each day.

The dust swirls,

The Sun rays blind,

The leaves strewn all over,

Blank thoughts crossing my mind.

You came in like,

A whiff of fresh air,

You seemed to be the answer,

To my daily morning prayer!

The road seemed new,

Through the shine in my eyes,

A smile is what I had,

For every tuppence and pice!

The breeze seemed lovely,

The Sun rays warm,

The flowers shining among the strewn leaves,

Thoughts of love became a norm!

The moment I laid eyes on you,

My world turned upside down,

For the princess that dwells in you,

You deserve every crown!

Graciously Yours!

P.S. : Aayush, this one is for you! May 12th April be etched in our lives as one of your happiest days! Wish you loads of love and happiness in the coming times ❤

The City of Joy

In order to add my latest venture of writing about Calcutta, Prateek from The Uncertainty Principle has made this wonderful contribution! Thank you, Prateek! In a surprising coincidence, he’s talking about the same concert, I’d attended and blogged about.

Prateek Kohli's avatarThe Uncertainty Principle

. . . Thank you so much guys for being such a sport ! Good night !!

Oh wait ! Before getting to the climax, there are somethings you need to know. Calcuta ! The city of joy ! There are just too many memories associated with this place. Staying just 150 minutes away, I have made numerous trips to Calcutta in the last five years. But each time I go, the love for art and sports in the hearts of people here, never fails to amaze me. That’s why when Aditi invited me to write about it for her latest venture, I gladly accepted within seconds.

This incident happened in October, 2014, when the Indian music sensation A. R. Rehman along with many other big names of the music industry announced to have a live concert in the mighty Salt Lake Stadium. Our tickets were booked on the evening…

Calcutta Cabbies #1.

kolkata_cab_photography

I was running late. And I had to cab the shortest fare distance to make it on time! And I knew I didn’t have smaller notes.

All three combined in Calcutta? You know it’s not a good start to the day!

Frantically searching for a cab, I saw a lot of occupied cabs going my way! First empty cab I saw was taken by another female.

I was already past my time.

Another cab rounded the corner and the available cab driver eagerly awaited my destination. On informing him about it, he immediately agreed. Afraid, he wouldn’t have change, I asked him before sitting in the cab if he would be able to encash my 100 rupee note against the smaller fare which was likely to be due. He agreed again!

A cabbie on the streets of Calcutta smiling and answering my questions? And all answers in my favour? I was dumbstruck! He must have sensed my excitement. I sat in the cab. He started driving away.

Cabbie (jovially!) : You’ll have to pay me double.

Me (laughing) : What for?

Cabbie : I am taking you across for such a short distance. I am also going to give you the change you need. A mere 25 bucks extra won’t pinch much!

Me : Actually you should be charging less considering I am taking you very near to one of the most religious places in the city! Wouldn’t you want to take the blessings of the Lord and also pick up some passengers? Double benefit!

Cabbie : If that be the case, then I won’t charge a penny from you.

Me (shocked at his polite and humorous demeanor!) : I won’t get down from the cab until you won’t take what is due to you.

Cabbie (still driving and I noticed from the shortest route available!) : How will 25 bucks extra matter to you? These days at every celebration, parents double the price of the kid’s phone. I am just asking for double cab fare.

Me : My parents aren’t like that. They need all details of every spending I make. (Though I don’t remember when either parent did that, but then I had to defend my parents somehow. Simply, because they are not like that.)

Cabbie : Tell your father tonight you met an old uncle who agreed to drive you around and you paid him extra.

As I approached my destination, he asked me particularly where I wanted to be dropped off because he didn’t want me to walk even a bit in the Sun, which as I now recall, was very harsh!

After a bit of friendly haggling, and ten bucks extra later, I made my way with his good luck and my smile!

Yes, I paid him more than his fare, but I don’t regret it! I think his people skills deserve that at the least!

Graciously Yours!

P.S. : The whole conversation happened in Hindi and a little Bengali here and there! To make things simpler, English has been used as the medium of expression.

Ahh. Calcutta!

Hi!
I have been blogging for quite a while now and there has been more than one mention of Calcutta but no dedication to it.

It’s time to set that right. This page will have a series of posts highlighting the nuances that make Calcutta, Calcutta.

Much love to Calcutta and all the Calcuttans, you make me love the place more each day, even though I may not say it out loud and definitely not in so many kind words.

Ahh. Calcutta!
To Calcutta, which has seen me build myself over innumerable joys and myriad pains!
Graciously Yours!
P.S. : I want fellow bloggers who’ve experienced the magic called Calcutta to contribute here! First ones I can think of are:
Looking forward to it? Do let me know!

Coupon-ed Love!

Sister  : Oh. My. God.

Me  : What’s wrong?

Sister : You bought me all the things I asked for?

Me : Isn’t that what you wanted?

Sister : I did. But I never thought you would actually do it! I gave you the list expecting you would buy at least a couple of items from the list. That would have been more than enough for me.

Me : So you are not happy about this? I don’t have a return option for most of these you know.

Sister : You are not returning any of my gifts. Not the jeans. Or this top. Or that dress. Don’t even think of the watch!

Me :  So the necklace?

Sister : Not even that.

Me : Then stop complaining and enjoy your gifts!

Sister : Thank you! This must have cost you a bomb! I feel really guilty. I want to make it up to you!

Me : But…

Sister : I am not listening to anything. I know you’re really busy and you always have office or this or that to do! But tomorrow we’re going out for dinner. My treat! Your choice.

I thought of the incident from two weeks ago.

Me : It is my sister’s eighteenth birthday! What do I get for her? And what all do I drop? She has a long list of demands!

Friend : Why do want to drop things out of the list?

Me : Because she has expensive taste and I have limited means!

Friend : Heard of online shipping?

Me : Heard of expensive stuff still being expensive in online shopping? I am just waiting for one of those day sales to come my way! But the good stocks don’t even last long enough for me to get to the shopping cart!

Friend : Those deals can be really painful to deal with! I was up at 7 am the other day huddled in front of the laptop with my mother to buy one of those funky watches for my brother. He had been eyeing it for a while now. First it took us five minutes of wait time to even access the website. And then after we gained access, it was out of stock by the time we managed to locate it on the website! How can so many people be after the same watch at 7 in the morning? It’s hard to believe but I bought him the very same watch at an even lower price the next day!

Me : How did you manage that?

Friend : I came across a website 27coupons.com. They have the most amazing deals for online shopping! I tried their deals for Jabong.com.

Me : Really? And they’re always available?

Friend : Yes. They have deals expiring after a certain time period but they will always have something new on offer. Something new and amazing!

Sister : What are you thinking?

Me : Oh! Nothing!

Sister : Tomorrow night is final then?

Me (speaking) : Yes. I’m fine with it.

Me (thinking) : She doesn’t really need to know I got discounts as high as 60% on international brands and covering products from watches, apparel, jewelry, et al! I’ll tell her about http://www.27coupons.com/stores/jabong.com/. Later.

Graciously Yours!

P.S. : This is a sponsored post but the views expressed are genuine. It is so much easier to utilize these coupons rather than wait for the sales.

Another year passes!

Time flies! In leaps and bounds.

Another year older and hopefully another year wiser!

To maintain tradition of my birthday blog posts, this one is the latest!

So there’s my new look (as informed in the previous post) which I absolutely adore, though some people claim I haven’t really changed much. But those some people also called me pretty today which basically means they’ve always found me pretty. Either ways, I am happy!

And there’s a lot of diaries to write in and books to read and chocolates to eat! All of which I am looking forward to!

Emotional moments with family, ISD calls from friends, long conversations with old mates, friends dropping in at odd hours, even the skies celebrating with rains (Oh, the romance of it!); I couldn’t have asked for better.

I do not want to rank my surprises and gifts but I have to mention two of these specifically!

One of my closest friends completed her #100happydays today! Merely a coincidence but being her 100th Happy Day and hopefully many more in between is a privilege!

And the other one is this :

20150405110135il

A blog post for me. A blog post about a blogger! What better could he have come up with? I felt the thrill of being written about, the rush of being mentioned on someone else’s blog and the love that poured out of each word in his post! It isn’t as easy for him as it is for me to write! Thank you so much ❤

Sending across lots of hugs and kisses to all of you wonderful, amazing, fabulous souls in my life!

Graciously Yours!

Makeover, huh?

I am being driven to an unknown location. And I need your help!

Urgent.

My kidnappers (my lovely friend and a lovelier sibling) are taking me to get a pre-birthday makeover!

Thankfully, they’re kind enough to not tie, gag and blindfold me! They’re ruthless though! They won’t tell me anything. Anything. At. All.

So while I find out more about this trip roadside-Sherlock-Holmes-style, and wonder about Benedict Cumberbatch you could tell me what you want to change in my blog! Is that too much to ask of you? A page here, a panel there, color change, font change, new topic, old post revival, anything, everything!

Or you could just tell me how much you love the blog!

Graciously Yours!

P.S. Is there a way I can read their minds? That would be fun! And evil.

His Smile, For Her.

image

HIS SMILE, FOR HER.

The day she saw him,
She knew that smile was for her,
The warmth that touched their hearts,
Brought them closer together.

Those eyes that glittered her way,
Could see her inside out,
His hand that touched hers,
Touched the soul within.

Hands clasped, rushing
Through the surreality,
Like two little kids,
Exploring the world together.

In the gleam of their happiness,
They didn’t see,
The brazen darkness,
Coming their way.

Before she could place herself,
In the safety of his arms,
They drifted apart in silence,
Lost and never to be found.

She didn’t know where to look,
She didn’t know what to do,
She thought he would wait,
Like she had all along.

Times later, she saw the smile again,
Not for her this time around,
She felt empty and blown away,
When those eyes treated her like a stranger.

The winds rose inside her,
Causing her fluttering heart,
To bang hard against her ribs,
Throbbing with pain.

She looked away from those eyes,
Not ready to bear their ignorance,
She told her heart to calm down,
“At least he was smiling, even if not for me.”

Graciously Yours!

Life Notes #9.

many-hands-together1

Warning : Rambling ahead.

I am sitting somewhere (bored to the hilt!) and writing this post where I shouldn’t be writing it from, which I am obviously not going to divulge here!

The past few days a lot of stuff has been swirling around in this crammed head of mine and it’s time to check with you awesome people whether my mind is still okay or is it time for therapy?

Here goes.

Never focus on only one person in your life. Be it friends or family (which rarely happens these days, honestly!) or even your love. And even your love.

Of course he/she maybe the love of your life and your soul mate and your Knight in Shining Armour/Damsel in distress waiting to be rescued and you would vehemently disagree with me, but hear me out!

Sure that person is the one you want to spend your whole life with but do not focus on only that person. Remember before your love came along you had others in your life who loved you, cared for you, cried tears of joys in your wins and held your hand to get you through those tough times? Those people also matter. Yes, they still matter. And you have to let them know that they matter. By actions as much as words. It may be just one person or two or several but let them know and be there for them.

You don’t want to be so content in one single relationship that you don’t even realize when the others left you behind and all you were left were with memories and ‘what ifs’ and ‘had I’s’.

It is good to have someone to go to in case you need to let out steam or you know just want a change of scene!

And frankly being tied to the hip is somewhat uncomfortable to those around you, irrespective of how many compliments about ‘cute’, ‘romantic’ and ‘perfect’ you get!

Note to self: Keep the ones who want to make you smile dear. There’s more than one person of that kind.

But, hey! That’s just what I think! What do you think? Am I going bonkers or do you finally see sense on this blog after long? [Hint: Just leave lots of love and affection in the comments! And side by me. Shhh!]

Graciously Yours!

P.S. :Thank you Regular Indian Girl for the book series. That may have influenced the post a little! Just a wee bit.

At God’s Door.

2015-03-16.png

AT GOD’S DOOR.

The Sun scorches my body,
I shield my eyes with my hand,
Flicking away the black ants,
Which crawl over me uninvited.

The tattered cloth barely covers my nakedness,
I writhe and lie in pain,
The Gods I have resigned to,
Lying in front of His sacred precinct.

A shadow falls over me,
There’s a respite for a while,
I open my eyes to see a towering figure,
Back towards me in black,

Maybe my time has come along,
Was that the God of Death I see?
Was I to be finally relieved,
Of the life of pain and suffering?

I hear the clanging of coins,
Was that a Messiah instead giving me money?
I crane my neck to look beside me,
But there’s no sign of the silver metal.

The striking pain in my neck is back,
Where I hurt myself from that wretched, jagged piece of rock,
I put my head on the ground again,
That figure in black still present.

Alas! The Sun is back on me,
That was a mere mortal,
Pursuing God for problems of his own,
While my life continues to take the life out of me.

Almost every day, I see  a poor, old man lying right in front of a religious place (which I refuse to mention because of it’s complete irrelevance) and many people like me pass him by with our own problems raging in our heads. I’m not proud of it. At all.

Graciously Yours!

P.S. : This isn’t a post about religion. Or faith. It is about humanity. Or our lack of it.
