What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Coaching and mentoring are terms used interchangeably, but they have different purposes.

Coaching: An organized process where a coach assists an individual in developing specific skills to achieve defined objectives. It is ideally performance-driven and focused on short- to medium-term goals. Coach, as a word, comes from the Hungarian word “kocsi,” meaning coach or carriage. These carriages, originally crafted in Hungary, became popular across Europe. Similarly, a coach helps individuals navigate their journey, guiding them to grow and reach their full potential.

Mentoring: In mentoring, an Industry experience mentor who has been there and done that before offers direction, counsel, and encouragement to promote a person’s entire development on both a personal and professional level.
