Yesterday, ELLE magazine released a new article featuring an interview of Imogen Waterhouse. The actress talks about her character from ‘The Buccaneer’: Jinny St. George. In fact, yesterday’s episode of ‘The Buccaneers’ (sisxth episode from this second season) was mostly focus on Jinny’s story and her bettle against her violent husband. It was a really impotant episode for Immy — and women in general. You can read the interview right below, as well as discover new photos of Immy by her sister Maddi Jean, shared by the magazine.

ELLE — Imogen Waterhouse Reflects on Jinny’s ‘Impactful’ Episode in The Buccaneers

The actress discusses portraying a character who endures a cycle of abuse, the scenes that were hard to shoot, and what’s next for Jinny and her son.

— Spoilers below —

From the beginning, the AppleTV+ period drama The Buccaneers, which follows a group of American women who arrive in England with plans to marry into British nobility, hasn’t shied away from depicting marital abuse and domestic violence via the relationship between Jinny St. George (Imogen Waterhouse) and Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick). Season 1 portrayed the ugly physical abuse Jinny endured, but it’s the sixth episode of the second season “Every Single Piece of My Heart,” that highlights the harrowing emotional consequences of their toxic relationship—especially in Victorian times.

After escaping from James in the season 1 finale, season 2 finds Jinny slowly allowing him back into her orbit. James tracks her and Guy (Matthew Broome) down in Italy and, over secretive meetings at his hotel, he butters her up with false promises about his changed behavior. Jinny is eager to believe him, both for the sake of her son Freddie as well as for her sister Nan (Kristine Froseth) and her true love Guy who sacrificed their future together to ensure Jinny’s safety. “She wasn’t the best sister in season 1, but I think now she’s realizing what a sacrifice Nan has made,” Waterhouse tells ELLE over a Zoom call. “[Reuniting with James] seems like the easy option. Obviously it’s not, but she thinks if this works out, then everything would work out.”

Jinny is this close to taking James back when Guy finds out and talks sense into her. They rush to gather their belongings to flee, but it’s too late—James kidnaps Freddie from under her nose in retaliation for her disobedience. “Every Single Piece of My Heart” is a distressing journey back to England for Jinny. With Nan’s help, she momentarily wins public opinion by having her side of the story published in the paper, but a confrontation with James at the opera lands her in a mental hospital. When James’s family finally gets involved, it’s too little too late; James is a loose cannon, and the episode culminates with him murdering his brother, Richard.

The emotional episode is a realistic depiction of abuse, which surprised even Waterhouse. “This is such an impactful way of showing the voicelessness of women, especially in this time,” she says. “It’s a fear of mine to have no one believe you or be sent somewhere and no one’s listening to you. I didn’t see it coming, but neither did Jinny.” Ahead, Waterhouse discusses the cycle of abuse Jinny finally escapes, what she’d say to fans who are upset with her character’s decisions, and what type of love interest she’d want for Jinny moving forward.

We’re drowning under new content these days! In fact, a new photoshoot, cover and interview of Immy Waterhouse was just released by the english magazine WhoWhatWear. This is Immy’s third photoshoot since the beginning of the month. This time, Immy talked a lot about her character Jinny in the tv series ‘The Buccaneers’, but also about her sister Suki and their latest work together. You can read it all and look through all the photos right below.

WhoWhatWearStorylines, Self-Worth and Sisterhood—Immy Waterhouse Lets Us in on Her Journey

When my screen flickers to life on a grey Monday morning, actress Immy Waterhouse appears in soft focus, sitting cross-legged on her bed, her hair pulled back loosely, leaving a few strands to frame her makeup-free face. She’s dressed in a printed white tee, a silver chain resting at her collarbone, and a stack of books in the background. I spot Intermezzo by Sally Rooney and smile. It feels like a fitting detail considering this paperback also sits atop the book pile next to my bed. This is my first proper introduction to Waterhouse, though she already feels familiar; that rare kind of person who gives you the full, unguarded shape of herself from the outset.

We are speaking just a few days ahead of our Who What Wear UK cover shoot, set to take place on the Eastbourne coastline. The weather, naturally, is forecasted to be the kind of damp, wind-whipped British summer reality we know all too well, but Waterhouse, in true form, isn’t phased. “I’m actually really excited,” she says. “You know, that kind of rain-and-romance [atmosphere] feels really true to what our summers are like here.” When shoot day rolls around, the forecast delivers—overcast skies, relentless rain—but Waterhouse arrives calm and bright, easing everyone on set into the day with the same serene energy she brought to our call.

Waterhouse is often introduced in tandem with someone else, her sister, Suki, a model-turned-actor-turned-singer and fellow member of a family of creatives, but what strikes me most is how firmly rooted Waterhouse is in who she is; someone who has learned to tread their own path confidently, calmly and authentically.

Whilst she may be visibly relaxed now, she’s no stranger to emotional intensity, particularly through her character, Jinny St. George, in The Buccaneers, which has since returned for its second season on Apple TV+. “I think it’s a really good season,” she tells me. “It takes the best bits of season one and runs with them. There’s still the drama, and it’s seductive and all of that, but there’s also this groundedness. You get to go deeper with everyone.”
