Panel Discussion: Update on Global and EU Tax Policy and the shifting dynamics: The Malta perspective thereon
Global Tax Developments over the past 12 months have once again been characterised with shifting international tax policy, not least with the G7 countries’ agreement in June 2025 with the US Treasury (under the threat of US retaliatory provisions combatting extraterritorial taxation of US corporations), and the ultimate publication by the OECD of the Pillar 2 “Side-by-Side Package” in January 2026 and endorsement thereof by the EC. In addition, within the EC, and subject to the current geopolitical crisis not disrupting the EC Agenda, the EC is expected to present both its Tax Simplification Omnibus and DAC Recast by 24 June 2026 as part of the EC “Decluttering and Simplification” Agenda. The panel, comprised of representatives from stakeholders: Malta Tax & Customs Authority, Business Europe, tax practitioners and cross-border business operators, will present their perspectives on their expectations from this shifting international tax landscape and, in particular, the importance of the EC realistically working towards addressing the EU’s competitiveness gaps, not least from a tax and regulatory perspective and any related challenges thereon.

Panellists will discuss how Malta can strengthen and differentiate its proposition to attract single and multi-family offices, the role of professional service providers in supporting family office operations, and the steps needed to future-proof Malta’s offering in an increasingly competitive international environment.
