A tutorial on how to make this icon for PS(7) :

Since
caudebac asked so nicely.
I am a big fan of muted colors, but as you can see, no muted colors here. It depends from icon to icon whether you can use muted colours or not. And there are enough tutorials out there to teach you how to do that, so I'm not going to do that. Go to the memories of this community or go to
teh_indy 's journal to find out how to do it on PSP.
1.
This was the original base, made by
elixer_depp .
2.
I was not happy with the position, because I wanted to use the shadow for my text.

And, yes, here's how you do it. Easy, no? I also think I must have flipped it horizontally and vertically at least once.
3.
I added a green gradient to it and set the layer properties of it to color burn ; I think it must have been one of
teh_indy 's or a standard one in photoshop.
See how it changes the whole icon and highlights the green?
4.
Time for text. As the shadow of the ladybirds didn't extent far enough to cover my text, I smoothed it out. So, blur tool. Keep on smoothing it out until it more or less fits your text. Always better to have too much than too little.
The colors were taken from the icon itsself, if you use the eyedropper tool, that would be rather easy. Just select random pixels until you find a color that matches.
Also, for the ladybird part, I had to smoothen out the shadow even more.
ALWAYS use colors that are in your icon, otherwise they might just clash.
5.
As you can see, I added the ladybird part, and put a nice border on it from
teh_indy , set it to pin light and to 81%. And that's it.
From this ....
To this.
Three things to remember :
1. Always use a new layer. Even for your text. No buts. Use a new layer.
2. Always lighten your brushes with the layer palette.
3. Practice helps.
And tell me if yoy thought it was useful.
