GIMP
I checked the archives, but I didn't see anything in there about GIMP, a free imaging program that is a lot like photoshop 7.
Some comments on my last post about it revealed that other people are using it, and
callisto_22 pointed out that there are relatively few resources for GIMP users. I'm going to post a few links that I have found to be helpful in learning to do various cool things with it. These are good ones for the old version, 1.2.5. The newer version, 2.0, is a LOT like photoshop. I would go through these tutorials to learn the mechanics of GIMP, and then just play around with the new one to see what it can do. I made all of my icons with it, including the animated ones.
If you know of other links, please comment.
Grokking the GIMP--This is the most comprehensive tutorial I have found on the GIMP. The downside is that if you are just looking for how to do a certain effect, you have to sort through a bunch of information.
mmmaybe.gimp.org--Lots of information on how to do things like use quickmask, create brushes and make icons. Again, this is for version 1.2.5.
Sam's Teach Yourself GIMP in 24 Hours--I think this is the most useful one. The link is to hour 14, "Dazzling Text Effects," but you can access the rest from that page.
