In over my head

Ok, I'm not very computer literate. I went to the GIMP website to get it, and I have NO CLUE where/how to download it, or which package to download, or...*dies* I like to make icons, but I can't get anything that will cost money. I'm broke. So can someone either help me through the download process or give me another free alternative that explains things in slightly less technical terms?
