Tut...image heavy...

Hiya! Simple Icon tut...me trying new stuff. Made with Photoshop CS, should be easily transferrable. This is only my second Tut so go easy on me. It's like 4am, so please forgive any spelling mistakes. On with the TUT. :)

We will be going from this

---> to this.

VERY Image Heavy!

We take our starting image and decide what we want to use and what we don't want to use...

And we crop down whatever area we want to use. in this case I just wanted to crop enough of his body to my liking using the
Crop tool in Photoshop CS. This option is avilable in PSP7 and PS7, in PS 7, you would use it the same way.

This is a clear view of what the screen will look like once you have figured out what area you want to crop.

and you will get something similar to this, depending on the type of photo you use and so forth.

Now we are going to enter the quick mask mode. Using a 1px round brush should do the trick to select the desired area, it just depends what you are going for. Use the brush on the bracelets like you would any regular image and then paint over the area you want to change. In this case I am going for just the colored bracelets on his arm.

Once you finish filling in the area you want to use, return to "Regular Mode" as I call it and you will have the little animated ants showing the selected area.

After that we are going to go to Image-->Adjustments-->Desaturate

This is what we are left with.

After changing the gradient to Overlay, this is what the icon will look like.

After we set the second copy of Dom to Pin Light, this is what the icon will look like.

This is the final outcome of the icon. Play as you like, I would love to see what you have made with this. I hope it was
helpful a little, feel free to ask any questions you might have.

EDIT:

When you save your cropped image for the first time, don't save over the original picture. When you use the crop tool it will just crop rom the original so make sure you go to file-->save for web--> and change the name so you can keep the original image for future editing purposes.
