GIMP Exclusion layer Equivalent

I usually don't have much difficulty translating techniques from Photoshop to GIMP, but when I try a blue exclusion layer, it never comes out quite right. The closest I've come is with a navy blue layer set to "Subtract," but it doesn't seem to be quite the same thing. I was curious to see how other GIMP users managed it.
