Mini-movie question

I understand how to make a mini-movie icon and everything but I don't know what to do about getting the animation I want. I could probably open my DVD in animation shop, but that of course would be a total overload of frames. How do people get animations/clips short enough in length to not freeze your computer? Thanks!
