How we break the poverty cycle and create ripples of change

Step 1

Locate the most at-risk children
Through our trusted local partners, we identify the most vulnerable communities – often remote villages, unsupported settlements, or areas built around rubbish tips – where children face extreme poverty and neglect.

Step 2

Engage the local community
We work hand in hand with local women’s groups, teachers, and community leaders to understand the realities on the ground. Together, we identify children most at risk and build the foundations for lasting change.

Step 3

Support children at extreme risk
Our focus is on children who have no safety net – those abandoned or orphaned, facing hunger, violence, and life without access to school, healthcare, or stability. Every child in our programs has overcome immense hardship to reclaim their future.

Step 4

Provide ongoing support
Rebuilding a childhood takes time and consistent care. We commit to each child for the long term. Supporting them from early primary school through to vocational training or university, ensuring they have every opportunity to thrive.

Step 5

Strengthen communities
True change comes from within. We invest in local infrastructure like schools, water wells, farms, and children’s villages, helping communities create sustainable solutions and reduce poverty at its roots.

Step 6

Break the cycle of poverty
The results speak for themselves. Former I Am Someone children are now teachers, social workers, nurses, and doctors, using their education and compassion to uplift their own communities and empower the next generation.

Beyond Aid

Love, safety, and belonging matter just as much as education.

Humanity at the Core

Every child deserves dignity, opportunity, and a name – not a number.

We know the key to breaking the cycle of poverty lies in education, sustainability, and empowering communities from within.
When children are given the tools to thrive, they don’t just change their own lives, they change their world.
We’ve seen it first hand: children with no prospects becoming surgeons, teachers, lawyers, and leaders, all driven by the dream to be someone.

A Dream come true

When we met Davis at 12, he was struggling to survive—without a home, without parents, and without the means to attend school. Every day was a lonely battle just to get by.

But from the moment he got a chance, Davis never looked back. He excelled in school, quickly making up for lost time and proving his determination.

Today, he’s studying Law at Kampala University, his dream of becoming a lawyer within reach. Through his relentless dedication—and a little helping hand from I AM SOMEONE—Davis is building a future once thought impossible.

Redefining Her Future

When I AM SOMEONE found Kadiatu at just eight years old, she was living on a rubbish tip, struggling to survive. With our support, she left that life behind and began building a future full of possibility.

Today, Kadiatu is studying agriculture at university, driven by a passion to create a better world. A decade after we first met her, she now gives back—mentoring and guiding children in situations like hers, using her own journey to inspire hope and change.

From Child Labour to Future Surgeon

Orphaned at just seven, Emmanuel was hungry, homeless, and forced to work to survive by the age of 12. When I AM SOMEONE found him in 2010, it was clear he needed urgent support to change his future.

Today, Emmy’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Now deep into his medical degree, he has already performed surgeries, delivered countless babies, and is on his way to becoming a Paediatric Surgeon—proof of the life-changing power of giving a child a chance.

From Orphaned at 5 to Future Social Worker

Orphaned at just five years old, Immaculate and her brothers were taken in by kind neighbors who struggled to provide for them. Living in extreme poverty, her dream of going to school seemed impossible.

But Immaculate’s resilience never wavered. Always gentle and compassionate, she set her sights on becoming a social worker to help children facing the same hardships she once endured. After 13 years with I AM SOMEONE, her journey is well underway—her outstanding grades earned her a place at one of the region’s top boarding schools, bringing her one step closer to her dream of changing lives.

Struggling Teen to Community Leader

When Alusine joined I AM SOMEONE in 2007, he was a spirited teenager in need of support. Orphaned at a young age and forced to drop out of school, his future seemed uncertain despite his deep desire to succeed.

With our help, Alusine completed his education, but after struggling to find work in Freetown, he returned to us with a new goal—becoming a social worker. We found him a course, and three years later, he’s now one of the most passionate and dedicated members of our team. Today, Alusine helps coordinate and manage our programs across Sierra Leone, committed to lifting more children out of poverty—just as he once was.
