Carroll Hall

Carroll Hall, located near the center of UNC’s campus off the Polk Place quad, is home to a variety of essential spaces for the school.

The building includes classrooms, labs, meeting areas and offices for faculty, staff and administrative units.

Key facilities within Carroll Hall are the Undergraduate Hub, Knight Learning Lab, Park Library, Freedom Forum Conference Center, N.C. Halls of Fame Room, Carolina News Studio and the Kuralt Learning Center.

The Knight Learning Lab — one of the first classrooms on campus to be fully transformed into a technology-enabled active learning environment — is a cutting-edge, tiered classroom designed to foster interactive and cooperative learning. This state-of-the-art space features 14 high-definition, independent multimedia screens and reconfigurable furnishings that promote student collaboration and peer teaching.

The Kuralt Learning Center in Carroll Hall 281 honors the legacy of Charles Kuralt, a distinguished UNC alumnus and renowned CBS News correspondent. The unique space replicates Kuralt’s Manhattan penthouse office, the contents of which were donated to the school after his death.

The room features ornate rugs, paneled walls and a brick fireplace along with 12 Emmys, two Peabody Awards and countless items of Kuralt memorabilia. It now serves as a setting for special occasions and meetings such as doctoral thesis defenses.

Kuralt was born in 1934 in Wilmington, North Carolina, and honed his journalism skills at UNC on the way to a legendary career built on his storytelling prowess and a passion for uncovering the heart of America.

The Park Library supports the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s educational, research and professional mission by teaching students, supporting staff, selecting appropriate materials for courses taught in the school and providing space for quiet study.

Among the resources the library provides:

  • Computer chargers, headphones and more for in-library use
  • Equipment for certain MEJO gear-related courses
  • Study space for up to 70 students
  • 11 Mac desktop computers with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft software
  • Bloomberg terminal available through online reservation via the Park Library website
  • 10,000 books
  • Theses of undergraduate and M.A. students
  • Prepared subject guides with recommended databases and websites

The research lab supports and cultivates the research tradition of the school by providing resources for research; facilitating research opportunities and collaboration; creating forums for the presentation and discussion of research; and promoting the research of faculty and graduate students.

At present, the research lab features:

  • Break-out spaces for faculty and graduate student research collaboration
  • A focus group room with adjacent one-way mirror observational space
  • DVR recording capability
  • Eye-tracking research suite with one-way mirror observational space
  • Interview rooms
  • Research equipment such as portable eye-trackers and EEG neuro headsets
