What We Treat

At Hillside, every child gets an individualized treatment plan to address their behavioral and mental health needs. We specialize in helping them learn to manage these conditions:

  • Anxiety: Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses for children and adults. From generalized anxiety to panic attacks and school avoidance, our clinicians will help clients and families gain skills to manage their anxieties in an effective and compassionate manner.
  • Depression: Depression is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States. Recent surveys report as many as one out of five teens suffers from clinical depression. When there is a noticeable change in academic performances, social interactions, and daily habits (i.e. hygiene, eating, sleeping) along with feelings or sadness, hopelessness, or even irritability, addressing them early can be critical to managing them in the long term.
  • Mood disorders: disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) or pediatric bipolar disorder are not as common, however, the right diagnoses can help curate the right treatment options.
  • Self-harm: Any type of self-injury can indicate an underlying mental health condition and should be a cause for concerns. Our programs aim to understand what led our patients to self-harm and give them tools and strategies to help them recover.
  • Impulsivity: Extreme impulsivity can go hand in hand with ADHD, anxiety, depression and many other mental illnesses. When the impulsive behaviors are negatively impacting one's life, our therapists will help your child learn to regulate their emotions and gain skills in manage one's behaviors.

Our Treatments for Psychiatric Disorders

Our evidence-based programs use a combination of the dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) modality, experiential therapeutic activities, and, when needed, medication to help clients manage or even overcome symptoms. Based on your child's clinical presentation and referral, we may recommend that they participate in:

  • Virtual intensive outpatient therapy (VIOP): This accessible, online path to mental health treatment offers teens ages 12-17 over 15 hours of comprehensive DBT in an engaging and structured program per week for a minimum of six weeks.
  • Day Treatment or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 also have the option to attend our day program. This comprehensive PHP program allows students to participate in full protocol DBT treatment and experiential therapeutic activities without overnight hospitalizations.
  • Residential program: When a mental illness requires 24/7 supervision and support, Hillside will gladly welcome girls ages 11-17 and boys ages 13-17 to participate in daily treatment in a structured environment.
  • In-home therapy: Our therapists also make house calls to clients and families in need. We can create a program around your schedule and help you feel supported through 24/7 access to our therapy resources.
