New years Resolutions
(Both silly and serious)
strikethrough means done. XD
Red means failed.  D:

  1. Do NOT buy anymore books until I have finished reading the majority (preferably ALL) of the books I already have.  If I manage to read a book a week, this means I should be able to buy some new ones around the first of August 2012.
  2. Buy bookshelf x2.
  3. Buy coffee table.
  4. Japan trip!
  5. Join gym.
  6. Lose 4cms around waist.  (waist 81cm - Jan.)
  7. Expand lolita wardrobe, but! No buying any until Japan trip.
  8. Buy flatscreen tv.
  9. Go to dentist.
  10. Get car in to be serviced.
  11. Clean out wardrobe in spare room.
  12. Clean out the airlock.
  13. Auction things off at AIcon.
  14. Follow up about the lasers.
  15. Get to work on time.  5minutes late is the only acceptable late.

For the random people out there reading this,  I just felt like sharing that I book budget.  That is to say, I very rarely go into a bookstore and just wander out with an impulse buy anymore.  Those days are long gone.  ~oh happy days of yore~

What brought this share-y thought on was that I recently re-did my wishlist for books/manga/graphic novels (after the original file corrupted.  Oh how I cried.) and the total amount (at bookdepository prices) eventually came to $1,206.83.  (Believe me, I had a little eye-bug-out moment myself)

That... that would get me overseas.  That would get me some furniture.  That would get me a little less in debt on my mortgage.  But instead I budget around slowly whittling this pile of want down to something a little less eyebrow-rise worthy.

.......I just felt like sharing that.  (I'm not sharing about the dvd list of want... it's just as scary.)

Side note:  I have anew tumblr as my regular one is set up in my brain for no reblogs of lolita, superheroes, fanciful art, etc.  http://guidedbywhimsy.tumblr.com/

Alright, so... The Legend of Korra.

I just started watching this through on Monday after deliberately holding off until the first season was over.  Three episodes to go tonight and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.  Bouncing around in my seat with excited squeals actually.  It seems to have been aimed at a slightly older audience then AtlA originally was, which is nice (I wonder if it’s from a learning curve company execs had discovering AtlA’s original fanbase age range...) and I adore Korra.  She’s such a feisty, blast of fresh air.

Anyway, one character in particular among the new Team Avatar got me thinking.  Asami.  When I first saw her I got an itchy feeling that she had an unseen plan going on under the surface.  To that end I can’t help but feel that the animators/writers had done everything they could to enhance that uncomfortable feeling.  For example, Asami’s drawn in a way that the majority of animators use for vampy, scheming lady characters.  Thinner eyes, dark/noticable makeup, confident attitude and elegantly proportioned.  It’s a stereotype I’m used to seeing on the schemers and I can’t help but wonder if the style was done on purpose to play up to that.  When I see how she’s drawn and, having been ingrained to therefore think she will act a certain way, every sideways glance becomes suspect.  Was that innocent or was it a subtle hint of things to come?

By episode five I was sure she was scheming something and had made up my mind to watch her carefully.  By episode nine I’ve gotten to see more of Asami and found to my pleasant surprise that she’s actually a really kick ass lady that escapes the stereotype that I thought might have plagued her.  I really quite like her and want things to go well for her.  But... I can’t help but wonder if the writers/animators are still hinting at coming bad things.  I no longer worry she’s scheming now, but I do worry that she’ll be drawn into a scheme.  Please don’t do this, I love how she is destroying stereotypes with how she is, I think I’ll cry if bad things happen.  But then again, I sort've trust these people to do so in a way that will break my brain in a good way.

Sideways idea: Asami cosplay... hmmmm.  That jacket is awfully cute.

Fannish gushing: Mako, you’re in the middle of a triangle that normally makes me cringe and back away... but I don't dislike how anyone involved is acting.  Gah.  Which makes me happy to really like Mako.

Oh god, three episodes to go tonight and then such a wait for season two!  I have such a feeling that all my rambles here are going to be destroyed.  Gah!

So this last month(s) have been spent trawling through information and fanfic/art for DC comics.  Young Justice (tv) has a lot to answer for.  (cassu_bean, you’re also partly to blame.  Why you enable fans with love for superheroes? XD)

Wally, I am intrigued by your Flash-ness.

Roy, why yes, you are sexy and have a very different back story in comic-verse that makes me want to know you more.

Dick, yeah well, Nightwing/Robin has always been my favourite DC-er, no hiding that little fact.  My old love for you is still going strong.  Mwah.

But!.... seriously DC, five Robins?  I was stuck on three, thinking Tim was the last one.  Bruce, you are confirming my thoughts that you have more issues than the average bat.

I LEARN MY DC HISTORY FROM UNBIASED AND TECHNICALLY PERFECT PLACES. Collapse )

Also, to keep up my Marvel points, the Avengers movie has been seen.  I think I could watch it everyday for a month and not be upset in the least.  Mmmmm.

160¥ is all you need to go on the "squishiest subway ever" ride.  I managed to have my bag squished in between two salarymen, so I could not move to a more viable position... if that had even been an option.  My left hand was smooshed up to a guys butt, my left breast was acting as a buffer to another guy as we all swayed in time to the subway car and I was taking mental bets with myself as to whether or not I would get a black eye from being butted in the face by the back of another guys bald head.
'Twas an experience!

First day in Japan today and the three travelling taureans have just got back to our hostel.  We have just gotten back from eating out (ramen for a yummy full tummy) and then raiding the local supermarket and convinience store.  Emma made the find of the day with tomato chocolate. D:
K, I thought you'd find it funny that the first place we're staying at is called 'K's House'.  XD
Currently drinking 'chocolat milk tea' and have a honey sandwich saved for a fast breakfast.
Hoping to climb Mt. Fuji tommorrow.  It poured down with rain earlier today and we can see Fuji-san from here, it's covered in snow.  Brrrr! very, very cold.

This is really just a quick test to see how updates go when playing around with my new tablet.  Weeeee!

Now the problem is I'm not too sure how to get some video or music files onto here ('here' being the tablet, not this post), which I would like to figure out before leaving tomorrow.  :-)   (oh look, the little keypad has a key for a smiley face!)

Urg, still need to pack.  Pretty sure I have everything that I need, I just need to transfer them to my bag and plan it all out there rather than in my head.

Stolen from Cass's Tumblr.  I have this weird dislike of reblogging things onto my tumblr, but at the same time, I don't think I can interact with other peoples posts unless I do this?  (2/3/12  I feel like an idiot.  I just noticed the 'reply' button.  XD)  Nor do I really want to have multiple tumblr accounts.  Sooooo, until I work something out, I repost the interesting stuff here.  ^_^;;;;;

TO MY LEFT: My stereo, which plays the fun music that I need to have playing.  (can't stand a quiet, morgue house.)
INTERPRETATION: Workin' it with the sound.  Sonic screams, hypnotic speech, could sing a four part harmony by myself & great voice (Barry Manilow!!) impersonations.  Yup, I could deal with this.
Let's add to it.  So it's pointing to my stereo, a piece of electrical equipment.  The boundaries are that I can't use this cool power unless I am using some sort of electical/man-made equipment to focus them through.  (Does this mean my identifying weapon is a pimped out, tech-ed up megaphone?  XD  Nah, I'd prefer some sort of stealth com. like you see commandos use.)

TO MY RIGHT: The telephone!
INTERPRETATION: So I need to use electrical equipment to focus my powers, why would a telephone muck that up?  Maybe conflicting electronic voices.  Which basically means anyone in todays world could use my kryptonite against me.  Urg, don't like that, I end up pretty durn useless!

Anyone else got interpretations or ideas?

Soooooo, just watched the first episode of Young Justice.

I really didn't have any intention in watching it, but I kept seeing people squeal happily about it.  Eventually my interest was piqued and I gave in and watched.  This seems to be a good method, since that's also how I discovered Avatar.  Is YJ as good?  Well, I'm only one episode in yet (double parter so a decent length at least) and I quite enjoyed.  Probably made better as I always seemed to prefer a lot of the 'sidekicks' in the DCU.  (Batman?  Pft, gimme Robin or Nightwing anyday)

In any case, I'll be happily watching more.

There seems to be all this mad blather of absolute glee about the Phantom Menace coming out in 3D the February and seeing it all across the internet it just made me go wtf?  Seriously, I am not a fan of the 'first' three movies and I did not get it.  To me, Star Wars doesn't really start until Episode IV.  And it was fairly much agreed upon from the fans and non-fans alike when the other three came out that they were... not as good as had been hoped.

Really, I'm not excited at all about the first three coming out again in 3D.  I barely even remember the plot lines of two and three.  If and when A New Hope goes 3D, then I'll get truly excited (going to a midnight showing with ticket held tightly in my sweaty hand and a feral gleam to my eyes kind of excited) but not before that.

So with the general disregard the majority held for the first three movies,  I had to ask "why?" was all the blithe glee happening for the 3D?  It wasn't until I came across an entry on tumblr that explained it as happy nostalgia.  Did this person think the movie was brilliant?  No, but was it the first (omg!) Star Wars film they had ever seen.  Also, first Star Wars film seen on the big screen.  And it was this that led them to the rest of the Star Wars universe where they fell hard and fast in fannish love.

O.o!!

That... that just seems so ODD to me.  That the Phantom Menace was someones 'first' and could be seen through such rose tinted, nostalgic glasses.  It just... didn't everyone watch the original three on VHS first?  You know, when they were about five or six?  (or about seven or eight like me, because I couldn't like the same things as my brother when I was younger then that....)

Personally, I did manage to see the original trilogy on the big screen.  Not when it first came out, I'm not that old yet, but when Lucas remastered and re-released it my family did a movie pilgrimage.  We're all SW nerds.

Reading about the fact that TPM had been some peoples first introduction to Star Wars, it really made me think about what a new generation of Star Wars fans there are out there now.  Seriously, their version of VHS is DVD.  Their version of SW: A New Hope is SW: The Phantom Menace.  It just boggles my brain.

Goosh.

Still not excited for Episode One 3D, but have a new perspective on the hype some have built up about it.

Gym!
So I finally managed to make myself get off my butt and sign up with a gym again.  Woo!

Went for the first time today.  Timed it so there wouldn't be a lot of people there as I floated around getting used to where the equipment all was.  This ended up being a positive as I had major malfunctions in figuring out how to GET OUT the freaking DOOR!  Little swipey-thing, why were you all the way over at the desk and not at the door itself?

In any case, it was only a half hour to fourty-five minute workout max as I was bumbling along and by the time I got to the last third of my old regular work out I was starting to feel really nautious.  Either it was the fact that I went with only having eaten breakfast that morning and my stomach was protesting or the fact that I worked out harder then my body has had to in the past year.  (It also could be a combination of the two....)  Looking to make it the whole way tommorrow, but eating small lunch first and maybe toning down on some of the weights.

I is proud!

"So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do."
Dead Poets Society, 1989

Spotted someone quoting this on Tumblr.  (I seem to be losing hours on there.)  It was a quote that jumped off the screen and spoke in my ear.  It said "Listen, remember and think".

Certainly something to put into thoughtful use when writing next.

....

I watched Dead Poets Society long ago for english in high school.  I remember thinking it was a brilliant film and have it firmly placed in my memory as one of the films that I enjoyed, would recomend to others and never, ever want to watch again.  My heart, my head, they could not take it.  (Other films that fall into this category are Pan's Labyrinth and Forest Gump.)

End of year meme. Take the first sentence/s of the first post for each month and compile them into a single post. Ignore quiz/meme posts.

January
So for AIcon this year I figured I'd cosplay as Nico Robin.  About two months to go so it's probably about time to start getting myself put together.

February
Borrowed some manga from shoujo85 and managed to put some thoughts together coherently on a few of them to the point a writing little mini-reviews.

March
And I feel just so damn relieved. (This was a locked post.)

April
Went and saw powerplant with keh_loves_blood  in the botanical gardens on Wednesday night and it was gorgeous.

May
None!!!!  Flip, I did no posts during my birthday month.  This is a shocker!

June
Turn up the heaters, winter's hit.

July
Okay, so this is pretty much going to be a photo post of doom.  keh_loves_blood , shihaf , shoujo85  & I all went to Cradle Mountain in a sort've present to ourselves for our birthdays (we're all Taurus' and most within days of each other) and somehow I managed to come back with over 380 photos of a four day holiday.

August
Soooo, I'm going to be doing the 30 day lolita thingy-goo inspired after seeing  's collected post.

September
There, a totally ominous title for the post that actually means not what it first looks like.  Huzzah.

October

Well shoot.  Talk about an awkward afternoon.

There is some (!!) office tension happening where I work at the moment with our supervisor not happy in her position and a lot of her stress (caused by those higher in the hierarchy) is oozing out and causing stress amongst the rest of the office.  At points it has occasionally led to short, angry outbursts.   In whole, it has become a not very nice place to be lately.

In the event of today, a staff member emailed around that, if okay with everyone else & supervisor, she would be flexing Thursday off.  I heard nothing more of it until late in the afternoon when I was cc-ed into the entire email thread that had been to-and-fro-ing since then.  Some things were written from both sides that brought other things to light and well... tension is high.

My problem was a little selfish.  I had asked around the office that morning if anyone minded if I flexed off early today (I had thought to get home early to set up a Christmas dinner that I’m hosting for some friends tonight) but had not asked my supervisor yet.  Perhaps you can understand my dread at now asking with the above drama occurring in between.

In any case, I sucked it up and asked.  I got a positive response but was then conversation-tackled with “and is this because of me as well?” followed by an angry/wet-eyed “I don’t want to be in this job”, “I can’t change who I am” and “I may get angry but there’s a lot of backstabbing going on in this office...”.  I was then called upon to give my opinion.

...

No lies, this supervisor has pissed me off at points, caused a LOT of stress these past few months and I have been on the receiving end of a few ‘chats’ in her office as well as being the recipient of at least one good yelling at.  I think I handled myself admirably.  I remained calm and:
-I told her that she would have to ask the emailer for her point of view on the subject of its contents as I could only guess at what was alluded to.
-I acknowledged she had reasons for her own stress but that it caused an oppressive feeling in the office that only spread the stress further.
-I noted that one of her arguments was similar to one I had previously voiced in a meeting (attended by the entire office) which she had nullified with the statement “you simply have to be more aware of the office”.

In any case, I finally managed to make it back to my own desk and at the time of writing this am watching the clock tick around, waiting for the other shoe to drop.  I’m hoping the afternoon can come to a close without a full out shouting match.

Having a bit of a giggle fit as I've only just discovered that DC has a superhero that hails from Tas, and not surprisingly has the not imaginative name of the Tasmanian Devil.

So a shapeshifter by the name of Hugh Dawkins apparently.  (Apparently?  Just look at the dude!)
.... Hmmmmm.
While I'm all "Bwahahaha!  Superhero from my state!"  I also have the knee jerk reaction of "Tasmanian Devil? Again?"  Really people, there are more then just devils here.  I know they're cool and all, but it just seems that if anything comes from Tassie, sports team or superhero, they just have to be named 'Tasmanian Devil/s'.  The only other option people tend to use is the Tiger.  Bored of it now.  (although will never be bored of a Tassie superhero in DC comics.  Hee hee hee.)

There, a totally ominous title for the post that actually means not what it first looks like.  Huzzah.

Read the gals version of loli_secrets and had a bit of a shock.  Wow they can be vicious.  However, I'm reminded of my first reaction to loli_secrets, a post where I raged and declared I'd never be a "lolita" if that's what they were like.  How embaressing.  That particular post is now locked as private so I can learn from it in future and not spread the stupid around.

I don't think I'll be going back to gal secrets as they seemed at first glance to be more of a "I hate your (specific identfiable person) style, go die" which I personally find a bit hard to take, but I also know that the group is most probably not a good representation of the whole gal community and shouldn't be taken so seriously.  (still, just wow.)

Second part of the title.... just finished watching the last episode of Natsume Yuujinchou San.  Fell for the first series of the anime, adored the manga and let out a very fangirlish squee of joy when I discovered season three.  So very sad to reach the end of it.  Until... the very final second of it has Nyanko-sensei saying "look out for us in three months".  Wha??  Seriously?  Yay!!

..........

Just trawled through the anime database's calander and it looks like Natsume Yuujinchou Shi is coming out in January.  Double yay!  No mention of number of episodes yet, but since all the others have all been around the 13 range, I'm assuming this season will be as well.  Wee, this will take me past what I've read in the manga.   Ooooooh, what will happen.  XD
